A model of stimulus-specific neural assemblies in the insect antennal lobe Inra

A fundamental question in computational neuroscience is to understand how interactions between neurons underlie sensory coding and information storage. In the first relay of the insect olfactory system, odorant stimuli trigger synchronized activities in neuron populations. Synchronized assemblies may arise as a consequence of inhibitory coupling, because they are disrupted when inhibition is pharmacologically blocked. Using computational modelling, we studied the role of inhibitory, noisy interactions in producing stimulus-specific synchrony. So far, experimental data and modelling studies indicate that fast inhibition induces neural synchrony, but it remains unclear how desynchronization occurs. The western extension of the World Health Organization (WHO) project to combat onchocerciasis (river blindness), mainly in Guinea, calls for realtime access to flow level data concerning the rivers to be treated. The correct amount of larvicide to be applied, as a function of flow, can thus be calculated. The Argos system was chosen for data transmission. The transmitter is connected to water depth measurement hardware produced by Elsyde and CEIS-Espace and designed around a relative piezoelectric sensor and an EPROM-based data storage unit. This unit stores the hydrometric data and transmits messages containing the last 15 water depth measurements made on the hour and half-hour. Background: Invasion of the mosquito salivary glands by Plasmodium is a critical step for malaria transmission. From a SAGE analysis, we previously identified several genes whose expression in salivary glands was regulated coincident with sporozoite invasion of salivary glands. To get insights into the consequences of these salivary gland responses, here we have studied one of the genes, PRS1 (Plasmodium responsive salivary 1), whose expression was upregulated in infected glands, using immunolocalization and functional inactivation approaches. The haematophagous bug Rhodnius prolixus has been a model system in insect physiology for a long time. Recently, several studies have been devoted to its sensory systems, including olfaction. However, few data are available on the basic organisation of the nervous system in this species. By means of neuronal backfills, histology, confocal microscopy and three-dimensional reconstruction methods, we have characterized the projection patterns of antennal sensory neurons within the central nervous system of this disease-vector insect. Biogéographie du complexe Anopheles gambiae de Madagascar, vecteur du paludisme IRD

Deux espèces du complexe #Anopheles gambiae$, impliquées dans la transmission du paludisme sont présentes à Madagascar : #Anopheles arabiensis$ et #Anopheles gambiae$. Sur le Haut Plateau Central, au dessus de 1000 m d'altitude, #arabiensis$ est la seule espèce existante. Dans le reste du pays, les deux espèces sont sympatriques et leurs fréquences apparaissent suivant un gradient lié à l'altitude et au climat. En effet, l'abondance de #gambiae$ croît au fur et à mesure que l'altitude diminue et que l'humidité augmente.
