Understanding of antimicrobial defence mechanisms of penaeid shrimp should help in the design of efficient strategies for the management and disease control in aquaculture. In this study, we have specifically analysed the expression in circulating hemocytes of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) encoding genes, such as PEN2 and PEN3, ALF, crustin, lysozyme and a putative cysteine-rich peptide. We evidenced a relationship between the level of expression of some AMPs and the successful response of the shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris, to circumvent a pathogenic Vibrio penaeicida infection. The immune modulatory activity of diet long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish has been previously demonstrated, although results for freshwater species are controversial.  This study evaluates the effect of different dietary lipids on freshwater catfish jundiá, Rhamdia quelen, survival and its non-specific response (phagocytosis) after being inoculated with the pathogen  Aeromonas hydrophila. Five diets were offered to jundiá fingerlings during 150 days prior to challenge: cod liver oil (FO), sunflower oil (SO), linseed oil (LO), canola oil (CO) and coconut oil (CNO). Este experimento se llevó a cabo para analizar los efectos inmunomodulatorios de arginina (ARG) y vitamina E (VE) en pollos de engorda infectados con coccidias. Partial or total replacement of fish meal by a mixture of plant protein (PP) sources (corn gluten, wheat gluten, extruded peas, rapeseed meal and sweet white lupin) balanced with indispensable amino acids was examined in juvenile gilthead sea bream over the course of a 6-month growth trial. A diet with fish meal (FM) as the sole protein source was compared to diets with 50%, 75% and 100% of replacement (PP50, PP75, and PP100). Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a ocorrência de ovinos soropositivos para o vírus da língua azul (VLA) no Estado do Ceará, Brasil, e analisar as proteínas imunogênicas das cepas virais circulantes nesses rebanhos. O teste de imunodifusão em gel de agarose (IDGA) foi utilizado para pesquisar 271 amostras de soro oriundas de 16 rebanhos. Os resultados demonstraram que 27,3% (74/271) das amostras analisadas apresentaram anticorpos contra o agente e 68,8% (11/16) das propriedades tiveram animais positivos. The PB1-F2 protein of the influenza Avirus (IAV) contributes to viral pathogenesis by a mechanism that is not well understood. PB1-F2 was shown to modulate apoptosis and to be targeted by the CD8+ T cell response. In this study, we examined the downstreameffects of PB1-F2 protein during IAV infection by measuring expression of the cellular genes in response to infection with wildtypeWSN/33 and PB1-F2 knockout viruses in human lung epithelial cells. Wild-type virus infection resulted in a significantinduction of genes involved in innate immunity. We have isolated and sequenced the genes encoding the heat shock proteins 60 (Hsp60) and 70 (Hsp70) of the salmon pathogen Piscirickettsia salmonis. The sequence analysis revealed the expected two open reading frames that encode proteins with calculated molecular weights of 60,060 and 70,400. The proteins exhibit a 70-80% homology with other known prokaryotic Hsp60 and Hsp70 sequences. The coding regions have been expressed in E. coli as thioredoxin fusion proteins. Both recombinant proteins were shown to elicit a humoral response when injected intraperitoneally in Atlantic salmon and also conferred protection to fish challenged with P. salmonis. In New Caledonia, shrimp hatcheries are confronted with mass mortality in the larval stages, a phenomenon poorly understood as no specific causative agent has been identified. This has resulted in an excessive use of prophylactic antibiotics, although their adverse effects in aquaculture are notorious. The present work was thus aimed at selecting potential probiotic strains for penaeid hatcheries. Soybean protein concentrate in Pacific white shrimp reared in bioflocs: effect on health and vibrio challenge Animal Sciences

Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp were reared in a bioflocs system and fed different levels of soybean protein concentrate as a replacement for fishmeal, and both immunological parameters of this marine shrimp and its resistance to Vibrio sp. infection (CPQBA 378-12 DRM01) were evaluated. Four different diets were formulated with 0, 33, 66 and 100 % of soybean protein concentrate as a substitute for fishmeal. Farming, and thus the domestication of Haliotis tuberculata, began recently. We compared the responses of unselected farmed and wild abalone to stressors that occur on farms. The aim was to determine if the farm environment had induced differences in the behavioural or physiological performances of the abalone. Thirty hatchery-born 3.5 year-old abalone and thirty wild ones were reared under standard farm conditions for 6 months and characterised for 19 traits related to growth, survival, behaviour and immunology.
