Bioactivity of diatomaceous earth to Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in different application conditions AGRIAMBI

The objective of this study was to evaluate the insecticidal activity of diatomaceous earth (DE) at different ambient temperatures on adult Sitophilus zeamais and progeny, using different doses and exposure periods. The experiments were performed in Petri dishes containing 40 g of the whole corn kernel, treated with DE at doses of 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 kg Mg-1. Each dish was infested with 25 S. zeamais adults and kept at climatic chambers under temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 ºC. The insect mortality was recorded after six and 15 days from the beginning of the bioassays. A cultura do tomate na Serra da Ibiapaba, no Estado do Ceará, é considerada uma das atividades agrícolas mais importantes e geradora de divisas para esta região. Entretanto, apresenta como uma das pragas chave a broca pequena, Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guen.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Essa praga ocorre geralmente em elevadas infestações, ocasionando danos à produção em até 90%, pela destruição e apodrecimento dos frutos, levando os produtores a realizarem até duas pulverizações por semana. Sua ocorrência foi constatada no Brasil, em 1922, no Ceará, e em 1939, em São Paulo, encontrando-se atualmente disseminada em quase todas as regiões produtoras de tomate do Brasil. Biological activity and persistence of pirimiphos-methyl applied to maize grain at different temperatures AGRIAMBI

The expansion of dryeration may impose a further problem for insect control with protectants - the high grain temperatures during insecticide spraying. To assess the impact of this procedure on insecticide activity, maize grains at different temperatures (25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 °C) were sprayed with pirimiphos-methyl. Residue analyses were carried out every 30 days and insecticide biological activity towards Sitophilus zeamais and Tribolium castaneum was assessed every 15 days throughout the experimental period of 90 days. BACKGROUND: Essential oils extracted from aromatic and medicinal plants have many biological properties and are therefore an alternative to the use of synthetic products. The chemical composition of essential oils from two medicinal plants (Eucalyptus globulus and E. lehmannii) was determined and, their insecticidal effects on the third and fourth larval stages of Orgyia trigotephras were assessed. RESULTS: Larvae were collected from Jebel Abderrahmane (North-East of Tunisia), conserved in groups of 50/box (21 × 10 × 10 cm) at a temperature of 25°C. The number of insecticide applications made by an apple grower to control an insect infestation is modeled as a geometric random variable. Insecticide efficacy, rate per application, month of treatment, and method of application all have significant impacts on the expected number of applications. The number of applications to control a given insect population is dependent on the probability of achieving successful control with a given application. Results suggest that northeastern growers have the highest and mid-Atlantic growers the lowest probability of controlling an infestation with a given application. This work aimed to evaluate the toxicity of some insecticides compounds on Aedes aegypti and Artemia salina larvae. Bioassays were carried out to evaluate the toxic effect after of 24 and 72 h using the compounds or associations. The LC10, LC50 and LC90 values were obtained and utilized for toxicity comparations. For Ae. aegypti, LC50 were 32.65 mg L-1 in 24 h for Na2[EDTA-Cu(II)] and total mortality in 72 h for SAP-Na2[EDTA-Cu(II)].

Bacillus thuringiensis é uma bactéria Gram-positiva, entomopatogênica amplamente utilizada no controle biológico de insetos-pragas. Entretanto, algumas cepas produzem B-exotoxina que é tóxica tanto para insetos como para vertebrados e muito persistente no ambiente. Por isso foi proibido o uso de cepas de B. thuringiensis que produzam este metabólito na formulação de biopesticidas de acordo com recomendações da Organização Mundial de Saúde. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar se o tempo de cultivo influencia a produção de B-exotoxina por isolados de B. thuringiensis. Chagas' disease is chiefly transmitted by feces of haematophagous bugs (Triatominae) that ingested Trypanosoma cruzi from blood of infected people or animals. Pyrethroids have been the main insecticides used against these insects. However, some populations of insects have shown significant levels of resistance to several pyrethroids, indicating the need of new insecticides for the control of triatomines.
