Différentes expressions de l’activité reproductrice d’Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn., telles que l’accouplement et les aspects quantitatifs et qualitatifs de la ponte, ont été étudiées dans une gamme de températures constantes relativement basses comprises entre 11 et 16 °C. L’expérimentation a été menée dans les conditions de laboratoire, avec une photopériode de 16 heures sur des pyrales dont les chenilles ont été collectées dans la nature au cours des printemps 1982 et 1983. L’accouplement a lieu rarement au-dessous de 13 °C. Analyse comparee des populations de Lepidopteres en vergers de Pomacees par piegeage avec des pheromones sexuelles de synthese Inra

Deux essais de piégeage par des attractifs sexuels de synthèse, portant sur 18 espèces de lépidoptères, ont été conduits en 1979 et 1980 dans 2 localités de la région d’Avignon en vergers de poiriers et pommiers. L’ordre d’apparition des adultes varie peu dans les 4 situations, ce qui devrait favoriser la détermination des dates d’intervention contre des ravageurs localement dangereux. L’évolution des captures au cours de la saison est influencée par la plante-hôte pommier ou poirier. Les peuplements, comparables dans ces 2 types de vergers, diffèrent par contre suivant le mode de conduite phytosanitaire des exploitations. Une lutte chimique intensive entraîne une forte prédominance d’un nombre réduit d’espèces.

Attraction of Cacoecimorpha pronubana male moths to blends of four sex pheromone components was studied in the wind tunnel.Z11–14:Ac alone did not elicit upwind flight, admixture of 10%Z11–14:OH or more led to successful attraction of males to the source. Attractivity of these binary blends was further enhanced by addition ofE11–14:Ac orZ9–14:Ac; the optimum was a blend ofZ11–14:Ac,Z11–14ratioOH,E11–14:Ac, andZ9–14r:Ac at the proportion of 100:30:3:3. In ternary and quaternary blends, the effect ofZ11–14:OH andE11–14:Ac was strongest at 30% and 3%, respectively. By contrast,Z9–14:Ac increased behavioral responses over a wide range.

Barcoding the base of Lepidoptera: exploring global diversity and evolution of the Micropterigidae Inra

Interim results are presented summarizing the global DNA barcoding campaign recently initiated for the Micropterigidae. This family is thought to be the sister group to all other extant Lepidoptera (Kristensen et al., 2007). Despite its potential significance for un derstanding the diversity and early evolution of the Lepidoptera, to date there is no COI data for this family available on Genbank. Preliminary phylogenetic analysis based on COI barcodes reveals the surprising potential informativeness of this marker for inferring deep relationships within the family. Behavioral responses of Spodoptera littoralis males to sex pheromone components and virgin females in wind tunnel Inra

The major component of the sex pheromone of female Spodoptera littoralis, (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate (1), elicited all steps of the male behavioral sequence, i.e., wing fanning and taking flight, oriented upwind flight and arrival to the middle of the tunnel, close approach and contact with the source. The activity was equivalent to that elicited by virgin females. In the range of doses tested, the dosage of 1 had no significant effect on the number of source contacts. Male response was significantly affected by light intensity, being optimum at 3 lux. Biological evidence of an oviposition-deterring pheromone in Lobesia botrana Den. et Schiff. (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) Inra

Females of the European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana Den. et Schiff.) usually deposit isolated eggs on flowers and berries of the grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.). We have investigated whether an epideictic pheromone could be present on the egg surface to explain this spacing behavior. About 21,000 eggs ofL. botrana were washed in cold methanol, and the biological activity was tested in a two-choice bioassay offering treated and nontreated areas. Different dilutions of the extract were tested in methanol, which was inactive alone. Calcium activates a chloride conductance likely involved in olfactory receptor neuron repolarization in the moth Spodoptera littoralis Inra

The response of insect olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) to odorants involves the opening of Ca2+-permeable channels, generating an increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Here, we studied the downstream effect of this Ca2+ rise in cultured ORNs of the moth Spodoptera littoralis. Intracellular dialysis of Ca2+ from the patch pipette in whole-cell patch-clamp configuration activated a conductance with a K-1/2 of 2.8 mu M. Intracellular and extracellular anionic and cationic substitutions demonstrated that Cl- carries this current. Cameraria ohridella, ravageur des marronniers d’Inde Inra

La mineuse du marronnier Cameraria ohridella est une espèce invasive en Europe dont l’origine est inconnue. Sa dispersion est très rapide et cinq ans après son premier signalement aux frontières françaises, elle était présente en automne 2003 dans la plupart des départements. Son potentiel de développement est très important, et deux ou trois ans après son installation, elle peut, dès le début de mois de juillet, provoquer la chute des feuilles de son hôte préféré Aesculus hippocastanum. Les principaux résultats sur les recherches réalisées en Europe dans le cadre du contrat européen Controcam sont présentés.

Background: Carboxyl/cholinesterases (CCEs) are highly diversified in insects. These enzymes have a broad range of proposed functions, in neuro/developmental processes, dietary detoxification, insecticide resistance or hormone/ pheromone degradation. As few functional data are available on purified or recombinant CCEs, the physiological role of most of these enzymes is unknown. Concerning their role in olfaction, only two CCEs able to metabolize sex pheromones have been functionally characterized in insects. These enzymes are only expressed in the male antennae, and secreted into the lumen of the pheromone-sensitive sensilla. Cloning and expression pattern of a putative octopamine/tyramine receptor in antennae of the noctuid moth Mamestra brassicae Inra

In insects, biogenic amines have been shown to play an important role in olfactory plasticity. In a first attempt to decipher the underlying molecular mechanisms, we report the molecular cloning and precise expression pattern of a newly identified octopamine/tyramine-receptor-encoding gene in the antennae of the noctuid moth Mamestra brassicae (MbraOAR/TAR). A full-length cDNA has been obtained through homology cloning in combination with rapid amplification of cDNA ends/polymerase chain reaction; the deduced protein exhibits high identities with previously identified octopamine/tyramine receptors in other moths. Cloning of an octopamine/tyramine receptor and plasticity of its expression as a function of adult sexual maturation in the male moth Agrotis ipsilon Inra

In the male moth Agrotis ipsilon behavioural response and antennal lobe (AL) neuron sensitivity to the female-produced sex pheromone increase with age and juvenile hormone (JH) level. We recently showed that the neuromodulator, octopamine (OA), interacts with JH in this age-dependent olfactory plasticity. To further elucidate its role, we cloned a full cDNA encoding a protein that presents biochemical features essential to OA/tyramine receptor (AipsOAR/TAR) function.
