Antileishmanial activity of some Brazilian plants, with particular reference to Casearia sylvestris Anais da ABC (AABC)
Antinarelli,Luciana M.R.; Pinto,Nícolas C.; Scio,Elita; Coimbra,Elaine S..
Leishmaniasis is a complex of diseases caused by Leishmania protozoa which treatment is restricted to a limited number of drugs that exhibit high toxicity, collateral effects and are often costly. There are a variety of tropical plants distributed in Brazil, and for many poor people the therapy for several diseases is based mainly on the use of traditional herbal remedies. In this work, the cytotoxic activity of 17 plant methanol extracts was evaluated on several Leishmania species and murine macrophages. Among them, the extract of Casearia sylvestris, Piptocarpha macropoda, Trembleya parviflora, Samanea tubulosa and Plectranthus neochilus showed a promissing leishmanicidal activity, exhibiting IC50 values below of 20 µg/mL against at least one species of...

In vitro activity of phospholipase A 2 and of peptides from Crotalus durissus terrificus venom against amastigote and promastigote forms of Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Barros,Gustavo A. C.; Pereira,Andreia V.; Barros,Luciana C.; Lourenço Jr,Airton; Calvi,Sueli A.; Santos,Lucilene D.; Barraviera,Benedito; Ferreira Jr,Rui Seabra.
Abstract Background American visceral leishmaniasis is caused by the intracellular parasiteLeishmania (L.) infantum chagasi, and transmitted by the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis. Since treatment is based on classical chemotherapeutics with significant side effects, the search for new drugs remains the greatest global challenge. Thus, this in vitro study aimed to evaluate the leishmanicidal effect ofCrotalus durissus terrificus venom fractions on promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi. Methods Phospholipase A 2 (PLA 2 ) and a pool of peptide fraction (<3 kDa) were purified from Crotalusvenom. Furthermore, promastigotes and peritoneal macrophages of mice infected by amastigotes were exposed to serial dilutions of the...
