Altered Testicular Morphology and Oxidative Stress Induced by Cadmium in Experimental Rats and Protective Effect of Simultaneous Green Tea Extract International Journal of Morphology

Cadmium (Cd), is an environmental and industrial pollutant that affects the male reproductive system. Cd induces its effect by affecting tissue antioxidant enzyme systems. Green tea extract (GTE) is an antioxidant and free radicals scavenger and has a chelating property. The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effect of GTE against testes damage induced by Cd. Four groups of male rats, were utilized as following: Controls, GTE treated, Cd treated and Cd + GTE, treated rats at the same doses. The rats received GTE and or Cd orally in drinking water. Anthocyanins are secondary plant metabolites responsible for the blue, purple, and red color of many plant tissues. The phenolic structure of anthocyanins conveys marked antioxidant activity in model systems via donation of electrons or hydrogen atoms from hydroxyl moieties to free radicals. Dietary intakes of anthocyanins may exceed 200 mg/day, however, little is known about their antioxidant potency in vivo. Consequently, the aim of this study was to establish whether anthocyanins could act as putative antioxidant micronutrients. Lipid peroxidation and lipid-derived oxidized products have been implicated in the pathogenesis of a variety of human diseases. To clarify the role of oxidative stress in essential hypertension and hypercholesterolemia the in vitro oxidative susceptibility of LDL, the antioxidant status and the lipid peroxide content of blood plasma were examined in hypercholesterolemic (HC), hypertensive (H), hypercholesterolemic/hypertensive (HH) and normolipidemic/normotensive subjects (N). Plasma ascorbate and lipid-soluble antioxidants were lower, while LDL oxidizability, CE-OOH and TL-OOH were higher in H, HC, and HH groups than in the N group.
