Biodiversity of macrofungi associated with chestnut in the North East of Portugal. IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

The northeast of Portugal (Trás-os-Montes) is a region where chestnut tree (Castanea sativa . Mill.) is one of the most important species in social and economical terms. Macrofungi associated with chestnut tree is of key importance for the knowledge of the biodiversity associated with soil and the equilibrium of the pl(lnt soil interactions and also as a complementary resource of these agroforestry, ecosystems. The study of the biodiversity and of the relative abundance of mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal species and of edible vs non edible mushrooms was under survey for 4 years. Ecological and economical impacts of edible fungi collection, including the impact on mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal species, are also under evaluation.

Effect of soil tillage on diversity and relative abundance of macrofungi associated with chestnut in the northeast of Portugal IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

European chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) is a forest tree of great economic interest for wood and fruit production in the north east of Portugal. In order to maintain the soil free of weeds farmers traditionally practice several superficial tillages along the year. Phytossanitary problems mainly related with increasing Phytophtora cinamomi contamination of soils are progressively changing these practices. The present work intend to evaluate the effect of two different soil management (tillage vs. non tillage) of chestnut orchards on the macrofungi diversity and relative abundance. Macrofungal fructification is a seasonal event related with environmental factors, such as temperature and rainfall. A relationship with climatic factors and sporocarps production has been established but these correlations differs considerably from environment to environment. European chestnut tree (Castanea sativa Mill.) has a great economic interest for wood and fruit production in northeast of Portugal. Over the last decade another important income associated with this culture has emerged - the collection and commercialization of wild edible mushrooms growing in chestnut orchards. Actually, despite the low knowledge of their biodiversity, ecology or sustainable management in those regions, mushrooms harvesting have been increasing, mainly due to their economic importance to local populations. The present work concerns results from the Project AGRO 689 on evaluation of macrofungi biodiversity associated with chestnut and oak trees in the northeast of Portugal (Trás-os-Montes), a region where these species have important social and economical roles. The study of relative abundance of mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal species and of edible vs non edible mushrooms are also main goals of this work. Ecological and economical impacts of edible fungi harvesting, including the impact on mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal species, are also under evaluation. We intend to evaluate the diversity of macrofungi associated with each habitat and to get insight into the differences between mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal species as well as of edible and non-edible ones.
