An investigation of the supply chain of fisheries products in Greece AgEcon
Kaimakoudi, Eleni; Polymeros, Konstantinos; Karelakis, Christos.
The present study provides an empirical investigation of the supply chain of fisheries products in Greece, through the implementation of the Structure – Conduct and Performance (SCP) methodological approach. The determinants of market performance have been analyzed considering the causal relationship of industry structure and firm conduct, and consecutively the causal relationship of firm conduct and market performance. Primary data were collected from Greek fisheries products stakeholders through personal interviews. The findings reveal that firm conduct is affected by industry structure and sequentially both have a bearing upon market performance. As concerns the impact of firm conduct on market performance, quality assurance has the most significant...

Application of Chow test to improve analysis of farmer participation in markets in Kenya AgEcon
Otieno, David Jakinda; Omiti, John M.; Nyanamba, Timothy O.; McCullough, Ellen B..
Involvement of farmers especially those at the smallholder level, in commercial agriculture is an important pathway towards economic development. There is a growing literature on the extent and determinants of market participation by farmers in different areas of the world. However, many studies fail to statistically account for the choice of either pooled models or disaggregated analysis of data from multiple sites. The consequence is that the scope and relevance of policy inferences on the basis of those results are limited. This study contributes to knowledge in filling the analytical void through application of the Chow test. Primary data from seventy seven vegetable farmers is analysed to understand factors that influence the level of market...

ASSESSING KOSOVO'S HORTICULTURAL POTENTIAL - THE MARKET FOR FRUIT AND VEGETABLES ON THE BALKANS AgEcon
Fischer, Christian.
SUMMARY Kosovo had been a net exporter – at least of some – fruit and vegetables in the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia before the civil war. Current reconstruction efforts therefore focus on restoring the past horticultural potential of the now independent province. This paper analyses the competitiveness of the Kosovar fruit and vegetable sector. By calculating average net trade flows during 1996-2000 for more than 20 individual fruit and vegetables and seven ag-gregates, demand potentials for the Balkan regional market are identified for potatoes, lettuce, garlic, dried beans and pears. In addition, average export unit values are calculated as price proxies in order to assess export price competitiveness in the region. While demand potentials for...

Market imperfections and income concentration: global and regional perspectives on Brazilian agricultural production performance. Repositório Alice
SOUZA, G.; GOMES, E.; ALVES, E..
We measure performance for the Brazilian agriculture by means of free disposal hull (FDH) measures of technical efficiency. Measurements are conditional on contextual variables that may be responsible for market imperfection variables. The production frontier is generated by a product probability measure. Production observations are aggre gated by county and analyzed by region. The efficiency measure is output oriented and assumes variable returns to scale. Output is rural gross income and inputs are land expenses, labor expenses and expenses on other technological inputs. The covariates for production are credit, technical assistance, social, environmental, and demographic indicators and income concentration, measured by the Gini index. Overall Brazilian...
