Azteca barbifex Forel (Hymenoptera: Formicidae): potential pest of citrus crops in eastern Amazon Neotropical Entomology
Farias,Paulo R S; Harada,Ana Y; Silva,Anderson G; Monteiro,Bruno S; Rodrigues,Nara E L; Santos,Naira A.
Damage caused by the ant Azteca barbifex (Forel) was identified in orange trees (Citrus sinensis), in Capitão Poço County, Guamá microregion, Pará State. The damage caused by the scraping of stems and branches lead to reduction in yield with subsequent death of the plant. These characteristics indicate A. barbifex as a potential pest of citrus crops in the eastern region of Amazon.

Drastic population size change in two populations of the Golden-striped salamander over a forty year period - are eucalypt plantations to blame? Naturalis
Arntzen, J.W..
Over the last half century the Iberian peninsula has seen the large scale planting of exotic gum trees (Eucalyptus sp.) therewith reducing space for native wildlife. An additional effect of the gum tree plantations may be the lowering of the water table in adjacent streams, to which amphibian species with a larval niche in the running sections of small streams would be especially susceptible. In northwestern Iberia that niche is occupied by the Golden-striped salamander, Chioglossa lusitanica. I here report on the demographic trends of two C. lusitanica populations over a forty year period, in two areas of one mountain range near Porto in northwestern Portugal. In both areas advantage was taken of the migration pattern of C. lusitanica to sites for...

Functional Links Between Biodiversity, Livelihoods, and Culture in a Hani Swidden Landscape in Southwest China Ecology and Society
Xu, Jianchu; Center for Mountain Ecosystem Studies, Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences; World Agroforestry Centre, China Program ; J.C.Xu@CGIAR.ORG; Lebel, Louis; Unit for Social and Environmental Research, Chiang Mai University; llebel@loxinfo.co.th; Sturgeon, Janet; Department of Geography, Simon Fraser University; sturgeon@sfu.ca.
The landscape of Mengsong, southwest China, was biologically diverse until recently due to historical biogeographical processes overlain by the swidden-cultivation practices of the Hani who migrated there several centuries ago. Our research sought to understand how the Hani adjusted their livelihoods to new policies, markets, and technologies, and the consequences for biodiversity conservation. We combined landscape, plot, and household surveys, interviews, and reviews of secondary documents, to reconstruct the major changes and responses to challenges in the social–ecological system over previous decades. Significant changes from closed to open canopy of secondary-forest vegetation took place between 1965–1993 and from open-canopy...

Microclimate and development of 'Conilon' coffee intercropped with rubber trees PAB
Partelli,Fábio Luiz; Araújo,André Vasconcellos; Vieira,Henrique Duarte; Dias,Jairo Rafael Machado; Menezes,Luis Fernando Tavares de; Ramalho,José Cochicho.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of intercropping 'Conilon' coffee (Coffea canephora) with rubber trees on coffee tree microclimate, nutrition, growth, and yield. Rubber trees were planted in two double rows 33 m apart, with 4x2.3 m spacing between plants. Treatments consisted of the distances from the coffee plants to the rubber trees: 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 m. Measurements of atmospheric variables (temperature, irradiance, and relative humidity), leaf nutrient concentration, internode length of plagiotropic and orthotropic branches, individual leaf area, chlorophyll content, and yield were performed. Intercropping promotes changes in the microclimatic conditions of coffee plants close to rubber trees, with reduction of temperature...

Successive cultivation of maize and agricultural practices on root colonization, number of spores and species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi BJM
Carrenho,Rosilaine; Silva,Eraldo Schunk; Trufem,Sandra Farto Botelho; Bononi,Vera Lucia Ramos.
A large number of propagules and a broad spectrum of species are two important components of ecosystem (including agroecosystem) sustainability. Previous studies carried out in temperate areas showed that repeated monoculture leads to a decrease in the species abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). This study evaluated the influence of maize monoculture and its agricultural practices on AMF during three consecutive cropping years in a Brazilian field. At the end of each cycle, soil and root samples were evaluated for species composition, spore populations and root colonization by AMF. The AMF community present during this period was scored according to the Spearman rank correlation and Principal Components Analysis. The mean percent root...

每穴種植株數對同質與異質大豆族群生育之影響 Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute
林順福; 詹國連; 魏趨開; S.F. Lin;K.L. Chan;C.K. Wey.
