Biorheological properties of intertidal organic fluff on mud flats and its modification of gill ventilation in buried sole Solea solea ArchiMer

Intertidal mudflats are important nursery grounds for juveniles of many fish species. However, they are being used increasingly to farm bivalve molluscs, which produce large amounts of organic "fluff", overlying the mud. Fish such as sole, Solea solea, hide in this fluff from potential predators, but the energy consumed by respiring the fluff may be high due to its biorheological properties. We developed an ichthyoviscometer. It incorporates a freshly killed fish as a viscometer, and we developed it to measure the rheological properties of fluids and suspensions, including fluff, at scales encompassing those in gill ventilation. Reclamation of tidal flat is one of the main ways to get a dynamic balance of the total amount of plowland. With the development of social economy and the increasing demand for plowland, the contradiction between tidal flat reclamation and environment protection becomes more and more outstanding. However,tidal flat reclamation should also follow the dynamic balance of total amount of tidal flat amount. The effects of habitat characteristics (mangrove creek, sandflat, mudflat and seagrass meadow) water salinity, temperature, and depth on the density, spatial distribution and size distribution of juveniles of five commercially important penaied shrimp species (Metapenaus monoceros, M. stebbingi, Fenneropenaeus indicus, Penaeus japonicus and P. semisulcatus) were investigated during a high shrimp recruitment peak lasting from January to June 2002, in four contiguous habitats within a non-estuarine mangrove bay at Saco da Inhaca, Inhaca Island, Southern Mozambique. Physical properties of sand and mud sediments OMA

The equations are set up to calculate the initial rigidity, Ty, of mud deposits as a function of specific mass and composition. This rigidity seems to be the most general characteristic of mud to describe its physical behaviour, under wave and current action. The threshold criterion for sand bottoms is described as measured by flume experiments (wave and currents). All these fundamental results are used to solve problems like sedimentation, erosion and navigation.
