A Review of Value-Added Centers: Objectives, Structures, Staffing, and Funding AgEcon
Holcomb, Rodney B.; Johnson, Aaron J..
Value-added centers have been established in many states. These centers vary greatly in objectives, operational structures, staffing, and funding. This paper uses examples of several centers and programs, with a specific emphasis on three centers, to provide a better understanding of value-added centers and their operations.

Gestão Estratégica de Cadeia de Suprimentos numa Empresa Agroindustial e na sua Rede de Agricultores AgEcon
Dias, Marcelo Fernandes Pacheco; Pedrozo, Eugenio Avila.
The competition is no longer between companies to become among chains. A critical point in this new paradigm is the management of these chains. From there arises the great interest in concept for management of supply chain. Coordinating the activities of the chain has been complex due to the large number of activities and the interdependence among them. One has searched for a systemic, multidisciplinary and inter entrepreneurs to contribute in a management proposal. It was made a revision of supply chain concepts, strategies of operations, quality and filière. The analysis of this referential indicates the possibility of minimizing the restrictions identified in literature. Based on this analysis a framework of management of chain supply was proposed....

Infectious diseases in oyster aquaculture require a new integrated approach ArchiMer
Pernet, Fabrice; Lupo, Coralie; Bacher, Cedric; Whittington, Richard J..
Emerging diseases pose a recurrent threat to bivalve aquaculture. Recently, massive mortality events in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas associated with the detection of a microvariant of the ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1 µVar) have been reported in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Although the spread of disease is often viewed as a governance failure, we suggest that the development of protective measures for bivalve farming is presently held back by the lack of key scientific knowledge. In this paper, we explore the case for an integrated approach to study the management of bivalve disease, using OsHV-1 as a case study. Reconsidering the key issues by incorporating multidisciplinary science could provide a holistic under-standing of OsHV-1 and...

Long-term ecological research in the forests of the United States: Key lessons for its application in Chile and around the world RChHN
FRANKLIN,JERRY F; SWANSON,MARK E.
Long-term ecological research addresses questions to which short-term research projects cannot effectively respond because of the temporal scales over which many ecosystem processes operate. In North America, this type of research has yielded important information on key processes and organisms in many forest types, from eastern broadleaf forests to the coniferous forests of the west, and from tropical to boreal latitudes. Long-term ecological research (that conducted at the decade scale or longer) in the forests of North America has included watershed studies, silvicultural trials, establishment of permanent plots to assess forest demographics, and the study of disturbance regimes and predator-prey systems. Instituting such research in forest ecosystems...

STRUCTURAL CHANGE IN HIGHER EDUCATION: IMPLICATIONS FOR AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS ACADEMIC PROGRAMS AgEcon
Connor, Larry J..
Major changes affecting Agricultural Economics include: level and sources of funding, increased accountability, a renewed emphasis on teaching, increasing university and college linkages, an evolving student base, and the continuing adoption of educational technology. Major implications include: broader faculty teaching involvement, agribusiness program development, expanding multidisciplinary majors, Ph.D program modifications for teacher preparation, expanding professional M.S. degrees, graduate program size and specialization reductions, alternative financing of graduate education, and faculty training in teaching methods. Teaching represents a major growth opportunity for Agricultural Economics, but it remains to be seen whether the discipline takes...

Syscolag: A transdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder approach towards integrated coastal area management. An experiment in Languedoc-Roussillon (France) ArchiMer
Mazouni, Nabila; Loubersac, Lionel; Rey Valette, Hélène; Libourel, T; Maurel, P; Desconnets, J-c..
The SYSCOLAG programme is a pilot operation at national level for experimenting with a knowledge-pooling system applied to the field of integrated coastal area management (ICAM). SYSCOLAG aims to constitute an interface between 'knowledge' and the users of knowledge' on questions related to the conservation and the development of the coastal zone of the Languedoc-Roussillon. To that end, SYSCOLAG offers both a transdisciplinary approach associating life sciences, earth sciences, social and informatic sciences and multistakeholders approach (associating scientists, decision-makers, professional users of the sea, environmental protection associations, and the general public) to integrated management of the coastal zone of the Languedoc-Roussillon. The system...

The database of the Brazilian Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio; GIVD ID SA-BR-001) includes data on the environment and biological groups such as plants. It is organized by site, which is usually a grid with 10 to 72 uniformly-distributed plots, and has already surveyed 1,638 relevés across different Brazilian ecosystems. The sampling design is based on the RAPELD system to allow integration of data from diverse taxa and ecosystem processes. RAPELD is a spatially-explicit sampling scheme to monitor biodiversity in long-term ecological research sites and during rapid appraisals of biodiversity that has attracted support from many management agencies, which are using it as their long-term monitoring system. Vegetation surveys include measurements of...
