Nectarless, a yield-reducing mutant character in the muskmelon National Institute of Agronomic Research
Bohn, Guy Weston; Mann, Louis K..
The nectarless character in muskmelons first attracted attention in certain breeding lines in which blooms tied for pollination failed to become moist with nectar. The dry nectary itself, which is found in both staminate and perfect flowers, is smaller than a normal nectary. It is flat-topped in staminate flowers. A large portion of the nectar-producing tissue consists of collapsed cells and, in contrast to that of normal nectaries, con tains little starch before anthesis and produces little or no nectar after anthesis. Honeybees avoid nectarless flowers, especially in extensive plantings and in locations where other food sources are abundant. As a result, in contrast to normal plants, fruit set on nectarless plants is reduced and delayed.
