A probabilistic approach of flow-balanced network based on Markov chains ArchiMer
Leguerrier, Delphine; Bacher, Cedric; Benoit, Eric; Niquil, Nathalie.
We used Markov chains to assess residence time, first passage time, rare of transfers between compartments, recycling index with a general mathematical formalism. Such a description applies to any flow-balanced system that can be modelled as a series of discrete stages or compartments through which matter flows. We derived a general set of equations from a probabilistic approach and applied them to a food web and a physical system derived from the literature. We therefore analysed preferential pathways of matter and behaviour of these systems and showed how it was possible to build up and exploit indices on the basis of a transition probability matrix describing the network, and to characterize with a generic algorithm: (1) the total indirect relationships...

Analysis and optimization regarding the activity of a Hungarian Pig Sales and Purchase Cooperation AgEcon
Balogh, Peter; Ertsey, Imre; Fenyves, Veronika; Nagy, Lajos.
In many ways, the Hungarian pork chain faces considerable disadvantages when compared to the situation in competing countries. In countries endowed with a modern meat chain, heavy concentration is the rule, but in Hungary decentralization still prevails, although thankfully the chain is not disintegrating even further. In our research we used the operation of co-operatives as a model in terms of a generalized network problem. The model allows the quantification of the number of pigs from given farms to slaughterhouses, the maximum sales revenue, the delivery threshold prices, and an analysis of the impact co-operative members exert on sales revenues.

Answer to the challenges of the 21st century in the Hungarian pig sector AgEcon
Balogh, Peter; Ertsey, Imre; Szucs, Istvan.
Whether particular countries, regions within countries, and particular societies gain or lose in the process of globalization depends on where they are in the process of agricultural transformation and to what extent they can adjust? The Hungarian pork chain faces considerable disadvantages in several aspects as opposed to competing countries. In countries with developed meat chain a powerful concentration could be observed, whereas in Hungary, although disintegration has not increased, decentralization still prevails. In our research the operation of the co-operative was modelled as a generalized network problem in 2008. The model allows the quantification of the number of pigs from given farms to slaughterhouses, the maximum revenue from sales, the...

ATITUDES DE COORDENAÇÃO DE PRODUTORES RURAIS NA CADEIA DA CARNE BOVINA: O CASO DO CITE 120 AgEcon
Malafaia, Guilherme Cunha; Maciel, Alessandra Costenaro; Camargo, Maria Emilia.
The changes in the worldwide competitive scenario have posed difficulties to the survival of companies, forcing them to establish necessary cooperative relations for maintenance and survival in the markets. However, the lack of coordination and cooperation is considered a classic problem in the beef chain. Taking these assumptions into account, the purpose of the present article is to verify how the organizational network CITE 120, established by a group of beef producers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), has addressed the environmental demands in the meat production sector and how the systemic relationships for the strengthening of the network’s interests are being promoted and organized. For the purpose of this research in-depth interviews were...

The REPAMO network (network ofmollusc pathology), created in 1986, ensures the survey of shellfish health status along French coasts according? to European Directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EEC. The aims of the network are 1 - to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens, 2-to study the means to decrease the impact of pathogens already present and to survey their evolution. In 2003, the REPAMO network focused on the survey oflisted diseases (bonamiosis and marteiliosis) in two areas under agreement process (Banc de Granville and zone X) and on the study of abnormal morlalities. Number of reported abnormal morlalities has increased in 2003. This rise can be partly explained by the recent network restructuring, but also by the summer heatwave and...

Boundary object or bridging concept? A citation network analysis of resilience Ecology and Society
Baggio, Jacopo A; Center for Behavior, Institutions and the Environment, School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Arizona State University; jbaggio@asu.edu; Brown, Katrina; Environment and Sustainability Institute, University of Exeter; katrina.brown@exeter.ac.uk; Hellebrandt, Denis; School of International Development, University of East Anglia; d.hellebrandt@uea.ac.uk.
Many recent studies observe the increasing importance, influence, and analysis of resilience as a concept to understand the capacity of a system or individual to respond to change. The term has achieved prominence in diverse scientific fields, as well as public discourse and policy arenas. As a result, resilience has been referred to as a boundary object or a bridging concept that is able to facilitate communication and understanding across disciplines, coordinate groups of actors or stakeholders, and build consensus around particular policy issues. We present a network analysis of bibliometric data to understand the extent to which resilience can be considered as a boundary object or a bridging concept in terms of its links across disciplines and...

Coastal phytoplankton community dynamics and coexistence driven by intragroup density-dependence, light and hydrodynamics ArchiMer
Barraquand, F.; Picoche, C.; Maurer, Daniele; Carassou, L.; Auby, Isabelle.
Phytoplanktonic communities maintain a high diversity in a seemingly homogeneous environment, competing for the same set of resources. Many theories have been proposed to explain this coexistence despite likely competition, such as contrasted responses to temporal environmental variation. However, theory has developed at a faster pace than empirical evaluation using field data, which requires inferring drivers of community dynamics from observational time series. Here, we combine autoregressive models with a data set spanning more than 20 years of phytoplankton counts every two weeks, together with nutrients and physical variables. By comparing models dominated by nutrients or physical variables (hydrodynamics and climate), we first explore which abiotic...

Construction of Governmental Function Network Based on the Perspective of Problem of Farmers Who Lose Their Land AgEcon
Li, Cui-ping; Wang, Yu-hua.
This paper illustrates three developmental stages of the functional transformation of western governments characterized by different extent of state involvement in economic activities. It investigates the functional role of nation-state in urbanization process in the context of western advanced economies with a particular focus on the laws and regulations, delineating the subjects, objectives, operational procedure, approval system, compensation standard and so on in relation to land expropriation. It also discusses the direction of the adjustment of state functions in China along three lines, including the transformation from political government to economic government, from direct management to indirect management and from comprehensive government to...

CONTRIBUCIÓN DEL CAPITAL SOCIAL EN LA MICROEMPRESA RURAL AgEcon
Ojeda Lopez, Ruth Noemi; Mul Encalada, Jennifer; Lopez Canto, Leonor Elena; Jimenez Diez, Olivia.
The present study research identified the level of social capital in a small enterprise and its impact in the company itself. In Latin America, the importance of this concept lies in its relevance because diverse disciplines uses it as a reference setting, today it is used not only as part of political science and sociology, but also as part of the organization theory, economics, human behavior and management. It put emphasis in the relationships among people, among organizations and not in the individuals as isolated subjects. One of its advantages is that the social capital can contribute in the analysis of the small local communities from a social perspective and economical development. Because of the nature of the data handled in this study a...

Groups, Networks, and Social Capital in the Philippine Communities AgEcon
Godquin, Marie; Quisumbing, Agnes R..
This paper explores the determinants of group membership and social networks of rural households using a unique longitudinal data set from the rural Philippines. We investigate two types of social capital: membership in groups (production, credit, burial, religious and civic groups), or “formal” social capital, and size of trust-based networks or “informal” social capital. Because men and women may have different propensities to invest in social capital, we analyze the determinants of group membership both at the household level and for men and women separately. We also disaggregate the analysis by type of group. The paper examines the determinants of the density of social capital, proxied by the number of groups and the number of network members. Finally,...

Information, Stability and Dynamics in Networks under Institutional Constraints AgEcon
Olaizola, Norma; Valenciano, Federico.
In this paper we study the effects of institutional constraints on stability, efficiency and network formation. More precisely, an exogenous "societal cover" consisting of a collection of possibly overlapping subsets that covers the whole set of players and such that no set in this collection is contained in another specifies the social organization in different groups or "societies". It is assumed that a player may initiate links only with players that belong to at least one society that s/he also belongs to, thus restricting the feasible strategies and networks. In this way only the players in the possibly empty "societal core", i.e., those that belong to all societies, may initiate links with all individuals. In this setting the part of the current...

Le réseau de pathologie des mollusques. REPAMO ArchiMer
Grizel, Henri.
The creation of a mollusc pathology network was in effect and made official during 1992. The subject of this document is to present this network, which has not yet achieved its definitive size. Why this network? The creation of this network responds to several institutional and scientific needs. Indeed, the setting up of control measures aimed at regulating mollusc exchanges notably via European Directive 91/67 and its transcription into French law has, as a corollary, caused the recognition of IFREMER as the agency charged with performing the analyses necessary for responding to the needs of this Directive, as far as marine invertebrates are concerned. Moreover, France being among the primary producers of shellfish in the world, the setting up of a...
