A study was performed to evaluate the effects of melamine (Me) and urea formaldehyde (UF) combinations in diets on growth performance, and characterization of toxicity appearance. The combinations of three levels of Me and UF (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0%) were conducted with one control (no addition) in a completely randomized design (CRD). Four hundred and eighty mixed-sex fish with the initial weight of 9.67±0.03 g were assigned to 10 dietary treatments with 3 replications and fed for 6 weeks. No interaction was observed between Me and UF in this study. Estimation of body weight of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) larvae by image analysis ArchiMer

The present study aimed to develop nondestructive methods to accurately follow the growth of fish larvae and post-larvae. European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) aged 71-100 days post fertilization (dpf; 20-419 mg) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) aged 14 dpf (10-25 mg) were used as model species. Several measurements were performed on digital pictures of larvae to model body weight. Using body surface area, contour, length and depth, it was possible to estimate accurately the body weight of young European sea bass and Nile tilapia (r² of 0.98 and 0.95, respectively).

Two experiments were conducted to assess the nutritional value and potential use of mesquite bean (Prosopis juliflora) meal (MBM) to substitute corn in extruded diets for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Digestible energy and the content of protein, soluble carbohydrates and amino acids were measured for 160 Nile tilapia juveniles (average weight 25.58 ± 5.52 g), allocated to eight treatment groups (four fed the experimental diet, and four fed a reference diet). The objective of this study was to investigate the possible link between cadmium exposure, hepatic markers of oxidative stress and aggressive behavior in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish were first exposed to 0.75 mg/L CdCl2 for 15 days (12 isolated fish for each group) and afterward a behavioral test was performed. Fish from the control and cadmium-exposed groups were paired for 1 h (6 pairs of fish per group) for determination of aggressiveness parameters. Immediately after the behavioral test, the animals were sacrificed and the liver was used to determine biochemical parameters. Cadmium decreased aggression in Nile tilapia. Qualidade do sêmen em tilápia do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus), alimentadas com dietas contendo diferentes níveis de vitamina C. Repositório Alice

A vitamina C atua na proteção de danos celulares provocados pelos radicais livres, sendo a suplementação considerada essencial para a maioria das espécies de peixes, uma vez que não a sintetizam em função da ausência da enzima L-gulonolactona oxidase. Assim, avaliou-se o efeito da suplementação de 0, 75, 150 e 225 mg de vitamina C kg-1 de ração na qualidade do sêmen em tilápias do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus). Os parâmetros quali-quantitativos do sêmen não foram influenciados pela suplementação de vitamina C, exceto a motilidade progressiva que aumentou linearmente com adição de vitamina C. Conclui-se que os reprodutores de tilápias do Nilo devem ser suplementados com 225 mg de vitamina C kg-1 de ração.

Hyptidendron canum (Pohl ex Benth.) Harley is a native tree of the Brazilian Savannah. The fish Oreochromis niloticus L. was used as an experimental model to determine the bioactivity of the crude ethanol extract as well as ethyl acetate, hexanic and chloroform fractions obtained from its leaves. The plant ethanol extract and fractions were administered to the fish orally with their feed. Twenty four hours later, the fish were sacrificed and their livers dissected, fixed in neutral formalin, embedded in paraffin and sectioned. Com o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade nutricional da torta de dende (Elaeis guineensis) para tilapia-do-nilo (Oreochromis niloticus), cinco dietas isoproteicas (30% de proteina bruta), e isoenergeticas (2.800/kcal ED/kg de racao) balanceadas en 10% de fibra bruta, contendo niveis crescentes de torta de dende (0%,7%,14%,21%,28% e 35%), foram administradas, ad libitum, durante 18 semanas, aos alevinos, com peso inicial medio de 1,52 +-0,04 g alojados por 120 dias em 35 aquarios de 60 litros com seis alevinos cada. Effects of Schizochytrium sp. on growth performance and survival rate of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, juveniles were studied. Fish (initial weight 2.27-2.30 g) were fed with commercial pellet feed (32% crude protein) supplemented with Schizochytrium sp. at 0 (control group), 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5% for 8 weeks. Fish (initial weight 84.08-84.26 g) were fed with pelleted feed (30% crude protein) supplemented with Schizochytrium at 0% (control group), 2.5%, 5.0% and 7.5% and reared for 8 weeks.
