Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent disease in reproductive age women. Adiponectin and Nitric oxide (NO) have an important role in physiologic functions especially in human reproductive system. Levels of NO increased in the endometriosis patients but serum adiponectin levels decreased in woman with endometriosis. The aim of this study was to determine adiponectin effect on nitric oxide secretion by cultured normal and endometriotic human endometrial stromal cells. Anticonvulsant and proconvulsant roles of nitric oxide in experimental epilepsy models BJMBR

The effect of acute (120 mg/kg) and chronic (25 mg/kg, twice a day, for 4 days) intraperitonial injection of the nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS) inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine (L-NOARG) was evaluated on seizure induction by drugs such as pilocarpine and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) and by sound stimulation of audiogenic seizure-resistant (R) and audiogenic seizure-susceptible (S) rats. Seizures were elicited by a subconvulsant dose of pilocarpine (100 mg/kg) only after NOS inhibition. NOS inhibition also simultaneously potentiated the severity of PTZ-induced limbic seizures (60 mg/kg) and protected against PTZ-induced tonic seizures (80 mg/kg). High levels of dietary lysine (Lys) increase the demand for Arg because of the antagonistic relationship between these amino acids. The Arg-Lys antagonism promotes an expressive increase in the renal Arg activity and consequently induces the degradation of Arg and the decrease in the activity of glycine amidinotransferase, an enzyme that uses Arg in the synthesis of muscle creatin. Amastigotes of Leishmania major have a great ability to evade destruction in host cells. This study investigated the activation in resident, inflammatory macrophages and J774 cells in vitro treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), soluble Leishmania antigen (SLA), calcium ionophore (CaI) and magnesium (Mg2+) alone or combined. An increase in nitric oxide (NO) production was observed in J774 or inflammatory macrophages treated with LPS alone or in combination with SLA and CaI. Farming of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis in Europe is severely constrained by the protozoan Bonamia ostreae. The introduction of the resistant species Crassostrea gigas has been a relief for the farmers, while the pilot programmes to select O. edulis strains resistant to bonamiosis performed in various countries can be seen as a promising strategy to minimise the effects of bonamiosis. Constitutive nitric oxide synthase (cNOS) activity in Langerhans islets from streptozotocin diabetic rats BJMBR

Nitric oxide synthase activity was measured in Langerhans islets isolated from control and streptozotocin diabetic rats. The activity of the enzyme was linear up to 150 µg of protein from control rats and was optimal at 0.1 µM calcium, when it was measured after 45 min of incubation at 37oC in the presence of 200 µM arginine. Specific activity of the enzyme was 25 x 10-4 nmol [3H]citrulline 45 min-1 mg protein-1. Effect of nitric oxide and plant antioxidants on microsomal content of lipid radicals Biol. Res.

The antioxidant ability of nitric oxide (NO) generated by a chemical donor and of commercially available antioxidant preparations was assayed. SNAP (S-Nitroso-N-acetylpenicilamine) was used as the NO donor, and Ginkgo biloba, wheat and alfalfa preparations were tested. Lipid peroxidation was assayed by EPR employing a reaction system consisting of rat liver microsomes, ADP, FeCl3, NADPH and POBN in phosphate buffer, pH=7.4. In vitro NO exposure decreased microsomal lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent manner. Devices for the rotational culture of cells and the study of biological reactions have been widely applied in tissue engineering. However, there are few reports exploring the effects of rotational culture on cell morphology, nitric oxide (NO) production, and cell cycle of the endothelial cells from human umbilical vein on the stent surface. This study focuses on these parameters after the cells are seeded on the stents. Results showed that covering of stents by endothelial cells was improved by rotational culture. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar emissões de NO e N2O até cinco dias após a primeira fertilização de cobertura com uréia em milho, em Latossolo Vermelho argiloso distrófico, sob plantio convencional e direto. A adubação de cobertura foi de 60 kg ha-1 de N. O experimento foi conduzido na Embrapa Cerrados, Planaltina, DF, com delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, sendo o terceiro cultivo de milho, em rotação com soja. Os fluxos de NO e N2O foram medidos em câmaras de PVC instaladas em cada parcela. Forty mature male rats (Wistar strain) were maintained alive for 40 days, separated in four groups of five rats each (Control, L-NAME, L-NAME + Enalapril, L-NAME + Verapamil). Three aortic wall parameters were analyzed, as follows: the Q A(SMN) (the number of the tunica media smooth muscle nuclear profiles per area), the S V(lamellae) (surface density of the aortic lamellae), and the aortic wall thickness (AWT). Rats of the L-NAME group showed high blood pressure and cardiac hypertrophy. The AWT, the Q A(SMN) and the S V(lamellae) showed the same tendency among the groups. Parkia platycephala Benth. (Leguminosae - Mimosoideae), popularly known as "visgueira", fava bean tree or "fava-de-bolota", is widely found in the Northern and Northeastern regions of Brazil. Its pods are used as cattle food supplement in the drought period. Compounds with a gastroprotective activity were obtained from the genus Parkia. Leishmania amazonensis is one of the major etiological agents of diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis, which is frequently unresponsive to all known treatments. Syagrus coronata (Arecaceae) is a palm tree with industrial applications used in local medicine by the Brazilian ?caatinga? communities. This work evaluates the in vitro leishmanicidal activity of S. coronata on L. amazonensis. Promastigote forms of L. amazonensis were treated with different concentrations of the aqueous extract from S. coronata. In addition, we evaluated the effect of the aqueous extract on infection of mouse peritoneal macrophages and nitric oxide production.
