Change in the shoaling behaviour and nutritional condition of anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) during a wind-induced water column disturbance: a natural event test of a general hypothesis ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Masse, Jacques.
Fishermen have long observed the sudden change of shoaling behaviour of small pelagic fish following a strong wind event. The phenomenon was thereafter confirmed by fisheries scientists using acoustic tools. In this study, we report our observations made with acoustics to measure disorganization of the previously observed spatial distribution and shape of shoals that occurred after a wind event. The measurements were made during a fisheries research cruise in the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic) aimed at determining i) small pelagic fish species abundance and ii) the individual nutritional state of anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) via evaluation of their RNA/DNA ratio. A spatial fine-scale study was conducted in two of the main breeding areas for anchovy,...

Effect of strong winds on the nutritional condition of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) larvae in the Bay of Biscay, Northeast Atlantic, as inferred from an early field application of the DNA/C index ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre.
A new biochemical index was used to assess larval fish nutritional condition during a. survey cruise in the Bay of Biscay in early June 1993. This period corresponds to the breeding season of the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.). The analysis of samples taken at grid points indicated a clear spatial pattern in nutritional condition, which increased from the middle shelf to the shelf edge. A relatively large fraction of the larval population proved to be in poor condition. Strong winds with speeds of 20-30 knots occurred during 3 d after the first survey and affected the vertical hydrological structure. During a subsequent survey, samples taken at approximately the same locations showed that anchovy larvae in all areas were in very poor...

Temporal and inter-specific variations in forage fish feeding conditions in the NW Mediterranean: lipid content and fatty acid compositional changes ArchiMer
Pethybridge, H.; Bodin, Nathalie; Arsenault-pernet, E. -j.; Bourdeix, Jean-herve; Brisset, Blandine; Bigot, Jean-louis; Roos, David; Peter, M..
We describe the total lipid content, lipid class composition and fatty acid profiles of adult forage fishes (anchovy, sardine and sprat) sampled in the NW Mediterranean Sea in 2010 and 2011. Inter-and intra-species differences were mostly related to sampling period with limited effect of gender or total length. As an assemblage, total lipid content and relative levels of triacylglycerols and fatty acids 16:1n7, 20:5n3 and 14:0 in forage fish were highest in summer and autumn, indicating better feeding conditions and a more pronounced diatom-supported food web. In contrast, total lipid content was lowest at the end of winter and spring, and coincided with high levels of 22:6n3, indicating a more herbivorous diet based on dinoflagellates. Resource...

Teneur en ADN de la larve de Dicentrarchus labrax : évolution ontogénétique et effet de la privation de nourriture ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Person, Jeanine.
Sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax larvae were hatched and reared for 34 days in the laboratory to test a recent biochemical index (DNA/C) of larval fish nutritional condition. Variations in DNA/C ratio values were monitored during the whole larval ontogenesis of fed individuals and the effect of starvation was assessed at three developmental stages. Three main periods in the relative DNA content variations were determined in close connection with growth patterns during larval ontogenesis.

The influence of nutritional conditions on metal uptake by the mixotrophic dual symbiosis harboring vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus ArchiMer
Martins, Ines; Bettencourt, Raul; Colaco, Ana; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Santos, Ricardo Serrao; Cosson, Richard.
The vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus, host thioautotrophic and methanotrophic bacteria, in their gills and complementary, is able to digest suspended organic matter. But the involvement of nutritional status in metal uptake and storage remains unclear. The influence of B. azoricus physiological condition on its response to the exposure of a mixture of metals in solution is addressed. Mussels from the Menez Gwen field were exposed to 50 mu g L-1 Cd, plus 25 mu g L-1 Cu and 100 mu g L-1 Zn for 24 days. Four conditions were tested: (i) mussels harboring both bacteria but not feed, (ii) harboring only methanotrophic bacteria, (iii) without bacteria but fed during exposure and (iv) without bacteria during starvation. Unexposed mussels under the same...
