Cet article précise le conflit potentiel entre les mesures de précaution relatives à la biosécurité et à la libéralisation du commerce. Ceci s'illustre dans le cas de l'implémentation du principe de précaution relative à la commercialisation des organismes génétiquement modifiés (OGM). Les auteurs examinent ensuite dans quelle mesure l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC) permet une telle implémentation et de quelle manière une meilleure intégration internationale des mesures européennes pourrait être obtenue.

The concept of substantial equivalence,introduced for the risk assessment of geneticallymodified (GM) food, is a reducing concept because itignores the context in which these products have beenproduced and brought to the consumer at the end of thefood chain. Food quality cannot be restricted to meresubstance and food acts on human beings not only atthe level of nutrition but also through theirrelationship to environment and society. The combination or stacking of different traits or genes in plants is rapidly gaining popularity in biotech crop production. Here we review the existing terminology regarding gene stacking in plants, and its implications in relation to genetics, biosafety, detectability and European regulations. Different methods of production of stacked gene traits, as well as the status of their cultivation and approval, are reviewed. Related to the different techniques of transformation and production, including classical breeding, and to differences in global authorization and commercialization practices, there are many types, definitions, and perceptions of stacking. Soybean proteinase inhibitor and the foraging strategy of free flying honeybees Inra

Previous laboratory studies reported disruption of the digestive physiology and learning behaviour in individual honeybees treated with Bowman-Birk inhibitor (BBI), a serine proteinase inhibitor expressed in some GM plants. Our objective was to detect behavioural effects of this transgene onhoneybees at the colony level, maintained in laboratory conditions. We set up a choice experiment, based on 150 free-flying individuals which performed a over 7700 visits on the flowers. The mean number of visits per hour, the mean time spent on the feeder and the interval between consecutive visits were not significantly different when the feeding sucrose solution was mixed with BBI at 100 μg·mL–1, a dose close to the expression level in planta. Substantial equivalence (SE) has been introduced to assess novel foods, includ inggenetically modified (GM) food, by means of comparison with traditional food.
