No previous studies have investigated the use of graphite instead of activated charcoal in orchids. In this work, different concentrations of activated charcoal or graphite were added to KC medium to darken the culture medium and stimulate the in vitro propagation of Cattleya bicolor and of a double hybrid orchid (‘BLC Pastoral Innocence’). The seedlings were inoculated on growth regulator-free KC medium; the effects of activated charcoal (0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0, and 7.5 g L-1) and graphite (0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0, and 7.5 g L-1) concentrations were tested separately. Establishing species distributions in large tropical plant genera: insights from twelve new Thai records of Oberonia (Orchidaceae) Naturalis

Establishing species distributions is particularly challenging in large tropical genera of inconspicuous plants. One such genus is Oberonia (Orchidaceae) which we are currently revising for Thailand. When encountering material of a putatively new species, great care has been taken to make a wide geographic search for matching extra-Thai taxa. Against this background, we here record 12 species as new for Thailand: O. dissitiflora, O. evrardii, O. gracilis, O. insectifera, O. lotsyana, O. microphylla, O. orbicularis, O. semifimbriata, O. singalangensis, O. stenophylla, O. suborbicularis, O. wenzelii. Medicinal plants are an important source of primary healthcare for many people in Tanzania. These medicinal plants are harvested from the wild, and increasing commercial trade poses a serious threat to local plant populations. Currently it is unknown which species are traded and in what amounts. Across the southwestern border in Zambia, the traditional dish chikanda has transformed from a niche product to being a mainstream delicacy. One of the main ingredients are wild-harvested orchids, and these have become depleted throughout the country as an effect of the increased trade. The Noble Dendrobium orchid (Dendrobium nobile Lindl.) is an ornamental species usually propagated by leaf axillary shoots called “Keikes”, but cutting is possible although, many do not produce leaves or roots and eventually rot. To increase the proportion of successful stalk cuttings, two substrates were evaluated in the present study (gravel and a 1:1 tree-fern shredded trunk:palm seed mixture) in interaction with the application of nitrogen fertilizer (urea 2 g L-1) and a commercial leaf fertilizer made from kelp seaweed (“Kelpak” a 2 mL L-1). Revision of Coelogyne section Fuliginosae (Orchidaceae) Naturalis

Section Fuliginosae Pfitzer & Kraenzl. of the genus Coelogyne Lindl. is revised. With the help of a pollen study, principal component and cluster analyses with morphological characters and a survey of some additional data, two species are recognized (C. fimbriata and C. triplicatula), including one dubious variety (C. fimbriata var. acuminata). Eleven names are reduced to synonymy. Three species formerly included in sect. Fuliginosae by several authors are excluded ( (C. micrantha, C. treutleri and C. schilleriana).

Section Speciosae Pfitzer & Kraenzl. of the genus Coelogyne Lindl. is revised. Sixteen species are recognized, including one new ( C. tommii) and one dubious species ( (C. dichroantha). Three former varieties are raised to subspecies level ( C. speciosa subsp. speciosa, subsp. incarnata and subsp. fimbriata). Two species formerly included in sect. Speciosae by several authors are excluded (C. eberhardtii and C. lawrenceana).

Revision of Coelogyne section Verrucosae (Orchidaceae): a new sectional delimitation based on morphological and molecular evidence Naturalis

Section Verrucosae Pfitzer & Kraenzl. of the genus Coelogyne Lindl. is revised using morphological and molecular data. Eight species are recognized, including two new ones ( C. marthae and C. verrucosa). One name is reduced to synonymy. Four species formerly included by several authors in sect. Verrucosae (C. brachyptera, C. papillosa, C. parishii and C. virescens) are excluded. A total evidence analysis of morphological characters and ITS and matK sequence data supports the monophyly of the section as here recognized. Coelogyne virescens (sect. Brachypterae) is identified as nearest neighbour to the species of sect. Verrucosae. [[abstract]]台灣位處熱帶與亞熱帶氣候區,天氣多變,夏季常受颱風肆虐,冬季則有寒流侵襲,天然災害時有所聞。每當發生天然災害,經常對農業造成難以估計的經濟損失。以今年莫拉克颱風為例,造成農業損失超過 160 億元,其中的蘭花產業損失即超過 2 億 8 仟萬元。由於風災導致的淹水問題,造成蝴蝶蘭組培瓶苗的污染與流失,植株浸水造成根部受害,並將外部病原引入蘭園內,造成後續的病害問題。行政院農業委員會在風災發生後,隨即責成農業試驗所組成蘭花災後復建技術服務團,進行災後產業復建輔導工作。工作內容包含進行災後蘭花病害調查與診斷,提出風災後之緊急處理措施,以及推薦後續病害管理處理程序,使受災蘭園的病害問題在極短時間內獲得控制與改善,更獲得一次漂亮且難得的危機處理經驗。 Taiwan is located in tropical and subtropical climate zone with the changeableweather.
