Acetylcholine in the larval food, honey, and stored pollen of a stingless bee, Melipona quadrifasciata National Institute of Agronomic Research
Welsh, John H.; Nogueira-Neto, Paulo; Jaeger, Celso P.; Ancona Lopez, Ana Amelia.
1) Using several methods, the larval food of Melipona quadrifasciata was found to contain amounts of acetylcholine estimated to range between O. 5 and 2.0 mg. equivalents of acetylcholine chloride per gram of larval food. Similar amounts have been reported for the larval food of the honey, bee, Apis mellifera. 2) The larval food of M. quadrifasciata was also found to contain a large amount of choline and an unidentified substance that was soluble in ethanol, gave a blue fluorescence, reacted with Dragendorf's reagent, and had a weak acetylcholine-like action. In one sample of larval food, a substance with the properties of glycine betaine was also found. 3) Samples of stored pollen were also found to contain acetylcholine, choline and the unidentified...

An interesting method of pollen collecting by bees from flowers with tubular anthers National Institute of Agronomic Research
Michener, Charles D..
Varous plants have anthers which open by apical pores; in some (Cassia in the Leguminosae and Solanum wendlandii in the Solanaceae ) the pollen does not readily come out of these pores, yet is abundant and is collected and used by females of certain large and moderate sized bees. A bee obtains pollen by curling its body over the ends of the anthers and then vibrating its wings (wings held in folded position). The vibrations, which produce a loud sound, cause the pollen grains to shoot out of the pores in the anthers ; many of them lodge on the body of the bee from which they are transferred to the pollen-carrying scopal hairs. A vibrating knife blade touched to the anthers also causes pollen to be discharged through the pores. The bees concerned are all...

Ruffaldi, P.; Ritz, F.; Richard, H.; Dambrine, E.; Dupouey, J.L..

Correlation between pollen aperture pattern and callose deposition in late tetrad stage in three species producing atypical pollen grains Inra
Albert, B.; Ressayre, A.; Nadot, S..
Premise of the study: Pollen grains of fl owering plants display a fascinating diversity of forms, in spite of their minute size. The observed diversity is determined by the developmental mechanisms implicated in the establishment of pollen morphological features. Pollen grains are generally surrounded by an extremely resistant wall interrupted in places by apertures that play a key role in reproduction, being the places at which pollen tube growth is initiated. Aperture shape, number, and position are determined during microsporogenesis (male meiosis), the earliest step in pollen ontogeny. We investigate in detail the unfolding of microsporogenesis in three species that present uncommon aperture pattern (i.e., disulculate in Calycanthus fl oridus...

Diet effects on honeybee immunocompetence Inra
ALAUX, C.; Ducloz, F.; Crauser, D.; Le Conte, Y..
The maintenance of the immune system can be costly, and a lack of dietary protein can increase the susceptibility of organisms to disease. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between protein nutrition and immunity in insects. Here, we tested in honeybees (Apis mellifera) whether dietary protein quantity (monofloral pollen) and diet diversity (polyfloral pollen) can shape baseline immunocompetence (IC) by measuring parameters of individual immunity (haemocyte concentration, fat body content and phenoloxidase activity) and glucose oxidase (GOX) activity, which enables bees to sterilize colony and brood food, as a parameter of social immunity. Protein feeding modified both individual and social IC but increases in dietary protein quantity...
