A nutrient density standard for vegetables and fruits: nutrients per calorie and nutrients per unit cost Inra
Darmon, N.; Darmon, M.; Maillot, M.; Drewnowski, A..
Objectives: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 recommended that consumers give priority to nutrient dense foods, those that contain substantial amounts of key nutrients in relation to the dietary energy they provide. This study developed a scoring system to estimate the nutritional adequacy of vegetables and fruits, on a per weight, per calorie, and per unit cost basis. Data: we used a French national food composition database for 637 foods, including 129 vegetables and fruits. Mean national retail prices were obtained for each food. Methods: The nutrient adequacy score was defined as the mean of percent daily values for 16 nutrients, based on 100 g of food. The nutrient density score and the nutrient to-price ratio were the mean of percent daily...

Capitalisation of government support in agricultural land prices: what do we know? Inra
Latruffe, L.; Le Mouel, C.; INRA, Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (FRA).
The objective of this article is to provide an overview of existing literature, both theoretically and empirically, on the extent to which agricultural subsidies do translate into higher land values and rents and finally benefit landowners instead of agricultural producers. Our review shows that agricultural support policy instruments contribute to increase the rental price of farmland, and that the extent of this increase closely depends on the level of the supply price elasticity of farmland relative to those of other factors/inputs on the one hand, and on the range of the possibilities of factor/input substitution in agricultural production on the other hand. The empirical literature shows that land prices and rents have a significant positive response...

Determinants of price received by cocoa farmers in Cameroon Inra
Kamdem, B.C.; Galtier, F.; Gockowski, J.; David-Benz, H.; Egg, J.; Kamgnia Dia, B.; CSAE, Centre for the Study of African Economies (GBR).
Various works have demonstrated that small-scale agricultural producers from developing countries do not generally obtain the potential gains linked to marketing. What can be done to help them obtain better prices? In this article, we examine two different solutions: increasing the bargaining power of individual producers and collective marketing through producer organizations (POs). We use data on 2,487 cocoa transactions undertaken by producers in Cameroon during the 2005/2006 season (IITA survey 2006). We first of all explore bargaining theories to identify the determinants of the price received by producers who sell their produce individually, and then, analyse the effect of collective marketing. We show that when the bargaining situation is least...

Information revelation through irrigation water pricing using volume reservations Inra
Tidball, M.; Terreaux, J.P.; INRA, Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (FRA).
We study the properties of a pricing rule for irrigation water with two variables: the volume consumed by the farmer and the volume he/she reserves before the plantation. With a simple deterministic model, we show how this pricing rule allows the Water User Association manager to anticipate any possible usage conflict thanks to farmer information revelation, to guarantee his/her association budget equilibrium. We show too how farmers are incited to restrain their use of water. Moreover this pricing method is fair (all farmers are equally treated), flexible through the possible change of the value of the parameters, and moreover simple and easily understandable (when for example translated in a double entry table). Therefore, it compares favorably to other...
