From the raw material to the finished product : honey National Institute of Agronomic Research
Maurizio, Anna.
This article is based on the paper read by Dr. Anna Maurizio at the Bee Research Association Conference on "Flower-bee relationship", help at the Kent Farm and Horticultural Institute at Sittingbourne on 27-29th July 1962. For over thirty years Dr. Maurizio has been engaged in research work on various problems in this field, including pollen analysis of honey, and also bee nutrition in relation to pollen consumption. For her lecture she chose a subject she is at present working on the effect on honey of the various processes the raw material undergoes : in the plant itself, in the bodies of the foraging bees and the house bees, in the cells of the comb, and in the vessel in which the honey is finally stored. Much of this work is so new that it is not yet...

In vivo anti-tumour activity of ethyl heptyloxyacetate against Ehrlich ascites cells National Institute of Agronomic Research
Townsend, Gordon F.; Brown, William H.; Felauer, Ethel E..
PREVIOUS investigations have shown that whole royal jelly, a fraction from royal jelly (10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid) and certain closely related dicarboxylic acids, some of which are also found in royal jelly, will inhibit the development of transplantable AKR leukæmia and ascites tumours when added in vitro just prior to transfer. This activity was associated mainly with 9-and 10-carbon straight-chain monocarboxylic acids, particularly decanoic acid in the ethyl ester form. These compounds showed no activity in vivo.

Investigations on the physical and chemical properties of beeswax National Institute of Agronomic Research
Bisson, Charles S.; Vansell, George H.; Dye, Walter B..
The physical and chemical properties have been determined on 60 samples of crude beeswax, obtained for the most part from beekeepers in California and other Western States, and these properties have been compared with those of freshly secreted scale wax and also with the properties of many of the same crude waxes after they had been decolorized by various processes. For freshly secreted beeswax the properties are nearly constant, but with changes in the quantity and kind of contaminating impurities some or all of these properties change. The physical and chemical properties of the impurities, and not of the waxes as a whole, must therefore be used as the basis for classifying crude beeswaxes. The impurities in crude beeswax consist of honey, suspended...

Regeneration of bone of the mandibles from the cytological and biochemical aspects. Effect of royal jelly on regeneration National Institute of Agronomic Research
Vittek, Jozef.
The healing process of injured bones of mandible in normal conditions and at the applications of some materials accelerating the regenerative process (extract of bone and Royal Jelly) bas been studied in rabbits (Chinchilla). The regenerative process bas been evaluated by histological and histochemical methods, by quantitative cytological methods (cytograms, mitotical and differentiation index, changes in vacuolar system of osteoblasts, volumen changes of nuclei and of cytoplasms) and by cytochemical methods (determination of DNA, RNA and AMPS in vitro and of the bone salts in vivo). Our results indicated that the followed materials, especially the Royal Jelly, significantly accelerated the regeneratiue process. The favorable influence of Royal Jelly upon...

Studies on the treatment of contaminated combs and honey with high velocity electrons National Institute of Agronomic Research
Katznelson, H.; Jamieson, C.A.; Lawton, E.J.; Bellamy, W.D..
High velocity electrons are effective in killing Bacillus larvae spores in thin sections of comb containing American foulbrood scale and in honey. The lethal dose for an initial concentration of 4x10(6) spores per ml is in the range of 2 to 4x10(6) equivalent roentgen, a value that is higher than that required for other sporeformers, such as bacillus subtilis. Honey of the initial concentration irradiated with sublethal doses 1x10(6) and 2x10(6)r. did not cause AFB disease when fed to healthy colonies of bees, whereas the unirradiated honey produced extensive disease within one month. Honey contaminated naturally with osmophilic yeasts (initial concentration 2040 per ml) was completely sterilizes by an irradiation dose of 0,5x10(6)r. Honey contaminated...
