Adoption of Phytase by Livestock Farmers AgEcon
Stahlman, Michael; McCann, Laura M.J.; Gedikoglu, Haluk.
Phytase represents a potential win/win management practice for non-ruminant producers since it can reduce the need for phosphorous supplementation and also result in lower phosphorous runoff. Cost of phytase has decreased and cost of phosphorous has increased. The reported adoption rate for phytase for non-ruminants was 17.2 percent, however it is currently added to virtually all swine and poultry premixes by feed manufacturers due to the cost savings. People were more likely to say they use phytase if they think it is profitable, not time intensive, and improves water quality.

Assessing the Market for Poultry Litter in Georgia: Are Subsidies Needed to Protect Water Quality? AgEcon
Mullen, Jeffrey D.; Bekchanov, Ulugbek; Karali, Berna; Kissel, David; Risse, Mark L.; Rowles, Kristin; Collier, Sam.
Concerns about nutrient loads into our waters have focused attention on poultry litter applications. Like many states with a large poultry industry, Georgia recently designed a subsidy program to facilitate the transportation of poultry litter out of vulnerable watersheds. This paper uses a transportation model to examine the necessity of a poultry litter subsidy to achieve water protection goals in Georgia. We also demonstrate the relationship between diesel and synthetic fertilizer prices and the value of poultry litter. Results suggest that a well functioning market would be able to remove excess litter from vulnerable watersheds in the absence of a subsidy.

Biosolids Application to No-Till Dryland Agroecosytems NWISRL
Ippolito, J.A.; Barbarick, K.A.; McDaniel, J.P.; Hansen., N.C.; Peterson, G.A..
Dryland agroecosystems are generally ideal environments for recycling biosolids. However, what is the efficacy of biosolids addition to a no-till dryland management agroecosystem? From 2000 to 2010, we studied application of biosolids from the Littleton/Englewood, CO Wastewater Treatment Plant versus commercial nitrogen fertilizer in dryland no-till wheat (Triticum aestivum, L.)-fallow (WF) and wheat-corn (Zea mays, L.)-fallow (WCF) rotations at a site approximately 50 miles east of Denver, CO. We tested if biosolids would produce the same yields and grain phosphorus, zinc, and barium concentrations as an equivalent rate of nitrogen fertilizer, that biosolids-borne phosphorus, zinc, and barium would not migrate below the 4 inch soil depth, and that...

SANTOS, T. B. dos; MEDA, A. R.; SITTA, R. B.; VESPERO, E. B.; PAVAN, M. A.; CHARMETANT, P.; PIPOLO, V. C.; PEREIRA, L. F. P.; VIEIRA, L. G. E.; DOMINGUES, D. S..

Changes in soil test phosphorus and phosphorus in runoff from calcareous soils receiving manure, compost, and fertilizer application with and without alum NWISRL
Leytem, A.B.; Bjorneberg, D.L..
Intensification of the dairy industry in southern Idaho had led to the over-application of manures and a buildup of soil phosphorus (P) which is a potential threat to water quality in the region. As the use of alum has been shown to reduce both soluble manure P and runoff P from alum treated manures, the objective of this study was to determine if surface applications of alum to dairy manure and compost prior to soil incorporation would reduce P losses under furrow irrigation on a calcareous soil. The effects of manure, compost, and fertilizer application with and without alum treatment on soil P, runoff P and aluminum (Al) under furrow irrigation, crop yield, tissue P concentrations and P removal over a four year period were investigated in Kimberly, ID,...

Delayed sample filtration and storage effects on dissolved nutrients measured in agricultural runoff NWISRL
Lentz, R.D..
Standard water quality analysis methods recommend that sediment-laden runoff waters sampled to determine dissolved nutrient concentrations be filtered immediately after collection. Few research studies have examined the influence of delayed filtration on sample stability or nutrient loss assessments. Twenty eight runoff water volumes were collected from 3 irrigation furrows during a 12-h irrigation set. Four subsamples of each volume were obtained; 2 were filtered (45 µm) in the field and the other 2 were filtered 10 days later, with or without boric acid treatment (1 mL saturated H3BO3 solution per 100 mL sample). All samples were refrigerated at 4 deg. C. Dissolved reactive P (DRP), NO3-N, and NH4-N concentrations were measured in all filtered...

Neste...

Feed management practices to reduce manure phosphorus excretion in dairy cattle NWISRL
Kebreab, Ermias; Hansen V, Anja; Leytem, A.B..
Phosphorus (P) is an essential mineral that needs to be supplied in sufficient quantities for maintenance and growth and milk production in dairy cattle. However, over 60% of the P consumed can be excreted in faeces with a potential to cause environmental pollution. Concern over higher levels of P in intensively managed livestock systems has led to legislation such as the Water Framework Directive in the European Union. In this manuscript, several methods of reducing P pollution are discussed. A major source of environmental P pollution has been overfeeding P mainly due to addition of ‘safety margin’ over the animal’s requirement and concerns related to fertility. Matching the animal’s requirement and feeding in groups so that animals at the same...
