Biological control of mycotoxin-producing molds. Repositório Alice
MEDEIROS, F. H. V.; MARTINS, S. J.; ZUCCHI, T. D.; MELO, I. S. de; BATISTA, L. R.; MACHADO, J. da C..
Mycotoxins are produced by the secondary metabolism of many fungi and can be found in almost 25% of the world?s agricultural commodities. These compounds are toxic to humans, animals, and plants and therefore, efforts should be made to avoid mycotoxin contamination in food and feed. Besides, up to 25% of all harvested fruits and vegetables are lost due to storage molds and/ or mycotoxin contamination and many methods have been applied to mitigate these issues, but most of them rely on the use of fungicides. Although chemicals are often the first defensive line against mycotoxigenic fungi, the indiscriminate use of fungicides are awakening the public perception due to their noxious effects on the environment and human/animal health. Thus, there is an...

Effects of different sulfur dioxide pads on botrytis mold in ?Italia? table grapes under cold storage. Repositório Alice
AHMED, S.; ROBERTO, S. R.; DOMINGUES, A. R.; SHAHAB, M.; CHAVES JUNIOR, O. J.; SUMIDA, C. H.; SOUZA, R. T. de.
?Italia? grape is one of the most important table grape cultivars grown worldwide. Gray mold, caused by Botrytis cinerea Pers. Fr., is one of the most important causes of postharvest decay of table grapes, and the control of this disease is very difficult because postharvest treatments with synthetic fungicides are not allowed in many countries. The objective of this study was to compare different types of pads releasing different doses of SO2 during cold storage to control gray mold in ?Italia? table grapes grown under subtropical conditions. Grape bunches were harvested from a commercial field trained on an overhead trellis located at Cambira, state of Parana (PR), South Brazil. The grapes were packed into carton boxes (capacity, 4.5 kg) and subjected to...
