Durante el 2007 y 2008 en el ecotono (bosque de encino y bosque tropical) ubicado en el Ejido de San Nicolás de los Montes enclavado en la Huasteca Potosina se estudió la abundancia y densidad del jaguar (Panthera onca) y la abundancia relativa (IAR) de seis de sus presas potenciales, armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus), coatí (Nasua narica), pecarí de collar (Pecari tajacu), venado temazate (Mazama temama), venado cola blanca (Odocoileus virginianus) y tuza real (Cuniculus paca). Comparison of fish assemblages in two littoral habitats in a Neotropical morichal stream in Venezuela Neotropical Ichthyology

Morichales are lowland streams in South American savannas with riparian forest dominated by the moriche palm (Mauritia flexuosa). We sampled littoral habitats from ten flooded vegetated patches (dominated by Mauritiella aculeate) and six sand banks in two months of the dry season (Feb-Mar 2005) in a stream in the savannas of Apure State, Venezuela. We collected samples that compromised 12,407 individual fishes of 107 species. Small-bodied fishes (< 100 mm), representing diverse trophic and life history strategies, were abundant. Estudou-se, na Unidade de Controle Biologico do Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Algodao, em Campina Grande, PB, o consumo alimentar e crescimento de Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas), tendo como presas lagartas de segundo, terceiro, quarto e quinto instares do curuquere-do-algodoeiro, Alabama argillacea (Huebner). Os resultados mostraram que (1) o consumo e crescimento de P. nigrispinus sao influenciados pelo tamanho da lagarta de A. argillacea e o instar em que se encontram as ninfas do predador; (2) ninfas de P. nigrispinus apresentam alta taxa de sobrevivencia, mesmo sob condicoes de escassez de alimento; (3) ninfas de P. nigrispinus sob condicoes de escassez de alimento apresentam menor crescimento; e (4) a quantidade disponivel de alimento tem influenciano...

Chemical tracers (e. g. stable isotopes or trace metals) are increasingly used to study trophic ecology and feeding habits of marine organisms and various factors can affect their values. The aim of the present study was to provide information on ontogenic effects on stable carbon and nitrogen values (delta C-13 and delta N-15) and on cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) concentrations in 5 cephalopod species from the Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic Ocean). Several sea bass-rearing experiments were performed from hatching trough metamorphosis. The rearing units employed were 500 1 polyester tanks, where flow rate and temperature of seawater, light and suitable food (rotifer and artemia) were controlled. Stock density ranged between 50 and 100 larvae per liter. Individuals held in tanks with internal black walls developed faster and had a greater survival rate than those in white tanks. This suggests that a better contrast between preys and background assists the larvae to see food organisms more clearly. The sea bass larvae search for food is based only in vision and not trought mechanoreceptors or chemoreceptors. Life table of Macrolophus basicornis (Hemiptera: Miridae) preying on Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Rev. Protección Veg.

Data obtained in studies on the biology and reproduction of Macrolophus basicornis (Heteroptera: Miridae) preying on Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) on tomato at 28°C, were used to construct life tables for this polyphagous mirid. When M. euphorbiae was preying on M. persicae, the net reproductive rate (Ro) was 4.75, the intrinsic rate of increase (r m) 0.02 (hembra/hembra/day), the mean generation time (T) and the doubling time (DT) 73.91 and 32.9 days, respectively. The corresponding values when it was feeding on M. euphorbiae were 2.57, 0.01, 1.014 days and 49.35 days, respectively. MATHEMATICAL MODELS IN CROP PROTECTION Rev. Protección Veg.

In the present work, the models of dynamics ecological populations were described. The development of the models, in order to describe these populations was presented. They have evolved from an independent way to the models that represent the evaluation of epidemiology in humans. The differential equations that describe the relationships prey-predator, crop-pest and migration effect were shown. It was also described the possibility to represent these models by means of equations in difference and computerized simulation systems. The interconnection between a mathematical model and the ecosystem stability according to the biological parameters was showed. Ecological questions that can be answered analyzing the models were approached.

A preliminary review is presented of fish species having consumed pelagic Cnidaria (Scyphozoa and Hydrozoa) as well as Ctenophora. Quantitative data are scarce. Knowledge of morphological and physiological adaptations of fishes foraging on gelatinous plankton is almost non-existent. Many fish species consume medusae and some reasons to suspect that there are even more that do so, are discussed.

Observations ichtyologiques effectuées en 2005 ArchiMer

In 2005, a flying fish Cheilopogon cyanopterus, which doesn't figure among the Europeans faunas although pointed out in 1973, is captured in the Bay of Biscay. Following the catch of a Cubiceps gracilis near the coast in Britain, the authors recapitulating the former descriptions indicate that adults of this oceanic species remain in the open sea. Only juveniles come, rarely, to the coast. The species figures in the diet of common dolphins, striped dolphins, swordfishes and tunas. NOT CONTROLLED OCR
