A NEW WORLD MONKEY MICROSATELLITE (AP74) HIGHLY CONSERVED IN PRIMATES Acta biol.Colomb.
OKLANDER,LUCIANA INÉS; STEINBERG3,ELIANA RUTH; DOLORES MUDRY,MARTA.
Given their great variability, microsatellites or STRs became the most commonly used genetic markers over the last 15 years. The analysis of these markers requires minimum quantities of DNA, allowing the use of non invasive samples, such as feces or hair. We amplified the microsatellite Ap74 in blood and hair samples in order to analyze the levels of genomic conservation among a wide range of primates including: Lemur catta, Alouatta caraya, Ateles belzebuth, Ateles chamek, Pan troglodytes, Papio sp., and Homo sapiens. In all cases we obtained amplification products that exhibited similar size both in monkeys and human (oscillating between 126 and 176 bp), except in the lemur where the detected fragment presented a size of approximately 1000 bp. The...

ALGUNAS CERTEZAS ENTRE LAS TANTAS PREGUNTAS DE LOS ÚLTIMOS DIEZ AÑOS ACERCA DEL GENOMA DE LOS PRIMATES Acta biol.Colomb.
NIEVES,MARIELA; MUDRY,MARTA D.

Analysis of some normal parameters of the spermiogram of captive capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella Linnaeus, 1758 ) Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Barnabe,Renato Campanarut; Guimarães,Marcelo Alcindo de Barros Vaz; Oliveira,Cláudio Alvarenga de; Barnabe,Alexandre Hyppolito.
Nine adult males of capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) were electro-ejaculated with a rectal bipolar probe under general anaesthesia with tiletamine -zolazepan association. From the obtained ejaculate, we only analysed the liquid fraction in order to avoid any kind of chemical treatment to attain dissolution of the seminal coagulum. The mean obtained volume was 0,2ml with the sperm concentration of 56.169 x 10(6) sperm/ml and mean motility 68,4% and vigor 2,6. The mean percentage of morphologic normal spermatozoa was 39%. The technique was efficient for semen collection in Cebus apella and allowed seminal evaluation without possible sperm lesions caused by chemical treatment for coagulum dissolution.

Canopy bridges as road overpasses for wildlife in urban fragmented landscapes Biota Neotropica
Teixeira,Fernanda Zimmermann; Printes,Rodrigo Cambará; Fagundes,João Cláudio Godoy; Alonso,André Chein; Kindel,Andreas.
The effects of habitat fragmentation and deforestation are exacerbated by some elements, such as roads and power lines, which may become filters or barriers to wildlife movements. In order to mitigate mortality and restore connectivity, wildlife passages are being constructed as linear corridors. The installation of these mitigation measures must be followed by systematic monitoring, in order to evaluate their use and effectiveness, to assist in their management, and to convince stakeholders of their value. In this paper we present the results of a monitoring study of the use of rope overpasses developed near a protected area in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil. The canopy bridges were installed by the Urban Monkeys Program in places where electric hazards...

Damage caused by brown-capuchin monkeys to nine Pinus species and the implications for forest management. Repositório Alice
LIEBSCH, D.; MIKICH, S. B..

Descriptive analysis of rabies in wild animals in the state of Sergipe, Brazil Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Antunes,K.D.; Matos,J.C.C.; Mol,L.P.; Oliveira,M.A.; Arcebispo,T.L.M.; Santos,V.G.; Oliveira,T.M.; Fontes,C.C.; Reis,C.H.L.; Diniz,S.A.; Pereira,P.L.L.; Silva,M.X..
ABSTRACT The wild cycle of rabies constitutes a serious challenge to epidemiological surveillance for disease control in domestic, companion or production animals, and in humans. The understanding of rabies virus circulation in the natural environment is increasingly important due to the constancy of natural reservoirs of the disease and the presence of potential vectors of the infection to humans and domestic animals. Aiming to evaluate the occurrence of rabies in the State of Sergipe a total of 935 hematophagous bats (Desmodus rotundus), 46 wild dogs (Cerdocyon thous) and 24 primates (Callithrix spp.) were analyzed from 1987 to 2014, of which 1 bat, 17 crab-eating foxes and no primates were positive. Due to the lack of positive results in hematophagous...

Effects of habitat disturbance and hunting on the density and the biomass of the endemic Hose’s leaf monkey Presbytis hosei (Thomas, 1889) (Mammalia: Primates: Cercopithecidae) in east Borneo Naturalis
Nijman, Vincent.
Hose’s leaf monkey Presbytis hosei is endemic to Borneo and occurs only in tall forest. In recent decades Borneo has lost a large part of its forest cover, mostly in low-lying coastal regions. Large intact tracts of forest remain in the interior, but these are by and large inhabited by tribes that subsist in part by hunting. The combined effects of habitat disturbance and hunting on the densities and biomass of Hose’s leaf monkey were studied in Kayan Mentarang National Park in Borneo’s far interior. Over four months, data on densities and hunting were collected by transect walks in four forest types. Hose’s leaf monkeys were hunted to deter crop-raiding, for their meat, and to obtain bezoar stones (visceral secretions used in traditional medicine). Hose’s...

Geographic distribution of ebony leaf monkey Trachypithecus auratus (E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1812) (Mammalia: Primates: Cercopithecidae) Naturalis
Nijman, Vincent.
As one of the fundamental units of ecology and biogeography, the geographic distribution of the endemic and threatened ebony leaf monkey Trachypithecus auratus (E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1812) on the islands of Java, Bali, and Lombok (Indonesia) has been assessed. All localities where the species has been collected are listed, and forty-two areas (each in itself consisting of numerous smaller sites) where the species has been recorded are discussed. The species occurs in a large variety of forest types, including mangrove, beach, and freshwater swamp forest; everwet lowland and hill forest; dry decidious forest; montane forest up to 3,000 – 3,500 m a.s.l.; and in some forest plantations (teak Tectona grandis, rasamala Altingia excelsa, acacia Acacia spp)....

Habitat use, fruit consumption, and population density of the black-headed night monkey, Aotus nigriceps, in southeastern Peru Acta Amazonica
HELENBROOK,William. D.; WILKINSON,Madison L.; SUAREZ,Jessica A..
ABSTRACT The black-headed night monkey, Aotus nigriceps, has one of the largest distribution ranges of the 11 night monkey species found across Central and South America. Yet, only three studies have focused on their ecology, describing considerable variation in habitat, group composition, and population density. Therefore, we analyzed habitat use, group composition, population density, and diet of 14 groups at two field sites in southeastern Peru. All sampled groups were found in secondary tropical rainforest, often dominated by native bamboo species. Half of the observed sleeping sites were in bamboo stands, though groups also emerged from cane thickets and lianas. This contrasts with other Aotus studies which have found groups living in tree cavities...

Home range of a Geoffroy's marmoset group, Callithrix geoffroyi (Primates, Callitrichidae) in South-eastern Brazil BJB
PASSAMANI,M.; RYLANDS,A. B..
The home range of one group of the Geoffroy's marmoset (Callithrix geoffroyi) was studied in a fragment of the Atlantic Forest in south-eastern Brazil, between February 1993 and January 1994. The total home range was 23.3 ha and the area used in the dry season was significantly larger than that of the wet season. The smallest distance travelled by group was 480 m/day in May and the longest was 1,980 m/day in March, but with no significant differences between seasons. The total home range used for this species agrees with the ecological grouping of the genus Callithrix proposed by Rylands & Faria (1993) and may be associated with the habitat structure, the limit of the fragment and the inexistence of neighbouring groups.

Importância de diferentes microhabitats no comportamento de forrageio por presas do mico-leão-preto, Leontopithecus chrysopygus (Mikan) (Mammalia, Callitrichidae) Zoologia
Passos,Fernando C.; Alho,Cleber J. R..
Prey foraging behavior in the Black Lion Tamarin, Leontopithecus chrysopygus (Mikan, 1823) was observed in the Caetetus Ecological Station, southeastern Brazil, during 550 hours of direct observations between December 1993 and February 1995. The scan sampling method was used to gather data. These tamarins use manipulative, specific-site foraging behavior. When searching for animal prey items, they examine a variety of microhabitats. The most important microhabitat used for prey foraging behavior was tree cavities (41% of the foraging observations), but palm trees (22%), bamboo (12%), vines (11%), bark (5%), seed pods of the "jequitiba" tree (4%), other places (3%) and epiphytes (2%) were also observed. Animal preys were frequently captured in understory...

Lobation and bronchopulmonary segmentation of Callithrix jacchus (Linnaeus, 1758) Biota Neotropica
Falcão,Brunna Muniz Rodrigues; Vieira,Ana Karoline Rocha; Souza,Joyce Galvão de; Carreiro,Artur da Nóbrega; Araújo,Débora Vitória Fernandes de; Santos,José Rômulo Soares dos; Menezes,Danilo José Ayres de; Medeiros,Gildenor Xavier.
Abstract The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) are small primates belonging to the family Cebidae, subfamily Callitrichinae and are the most well-known and common in adaptation to captivity. The scarcity of data in the literature on the anatomy of these marmosets and wild animals hinders the application of appropriate anesthetic and surgical procedures and therapeutics. In order to understand the anatomic variations in the lobation and bronchopulmonary segmentation the lungs were dissected from nine adult common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) corpses, five males and four females. In the marmosets, the right lung presented cranial lobe, middle lobe, caudal lobe and accessory lobe while the left lung presented cranial and caudal lobes. The fissures were...

Long-distance calls in Neotropical primates Anais da ABC (AABC)
Oliveira,Dilmar A.G.; Ades,César.
Long-distance calls are widespread among primates. Several studies concentrate on such calls in just one or in few species, while few studies have treated more general trends within the order. The common features that usually characterize these vocalizations are related to long-distance propagation of sounds. The proposed functions of primate long-distance calls can be divided into extragroup and intragroup ones. Extragroup functions relate to mate defense, mate attraction or resource defense, while intragroup functions involve group coordination or alarm. Among Neotropical primates, several species perform long-distance calls that seem more related to intragroup coordination, markedly in atelines. Callitrichids present long-distance calls that are...

Mad, bad and dangerous to know: the biochemistry, ecology and evolution of slow loris venom J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Nekaris,K Anne-Isola; Moore,Richard S; Rode,E Johanna; Fry,Bryan G.
Only seven types of mammals are known to be venomous, including slow lorises (Nycticebus spp.). Despite the evolutionary significance of this unique adaptation amongst Nycticebus, the structure and function of slow loris venom is only just beginning to be understood. Here we review what is known about the chemical structure of slow loris venom. Research on a handful of captive samples from three of eight slow loris species reveals that the protein within slow loris venom resembles the disulphide-bridged heterodimeric structure of Fel-d1, more commonly known as cat allergen. In a comparison of N. pygmaeus and N. coucang, 212 and 68 compounds were found, respectively. Venom is activated by combining the oil from the brachial arm gland with saliva, and can...

Morphometry and Histochemistry of the Rectus abdominis Muscle Fibers of Tufted Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus apella Linnaeus, 1758) International Journal of Morphology
Simionato,L. H.; Andreo,J. C.; Oliveira,J. A. de; Bortoluci,C. H. F.; dos Santos,N. B.; Moraes,L. H. R.; Rodrigues,A. C.; Andreo,M. B..
The phylogenetic proximity of primates to humans, along with their behavioral, biochemical, and anatomical similarities, make such animals more interesting experimental models for biomedical researches, as compared to classical laboratory animals. Another aspect that has called the attention of researchers is the differentiated quadrupedalism present in some primates. The tufted capuchin monkey uses the ground and tree branches as its support for locomotion, showing various postures while performing this task. On the basis of this information, we have decided to study the rectus abdominis muscle of the tufted capuchin monkey, with the following goals: the frequency and area of fiber types; its possible compartmentalization; and identify if this muscle is...

NADPH-diaphorase activity in area 17 of the squirrel monkey visual cortex: neuropil pattern, cell morphology and laminar distribution BJMBR
Franca,J.G.; do-Nascimento,J.L.M.; Picanço-Diniz,C.W.; Quaresma,J.A.S.; Silva,A.L.C..
We studied the distribution of NADPH-diaphorase activity in the visual cortex of normal adult New World monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) using the malic enzyme "indirect" method. NADPH-diaphorase neuropil activity had a heterogeneous distribution. In coronal sections, it had a clear laminar pattern that was coincident with Nissl-stained layers. In tangential sections, we observed blobs in supragranular layers of V1 and stripes throughout the entire V2. We quantified and compared the tangential distribution of NADPH-diaphorase and cytochrome oxidase blobs in adjacent sections of the supragranular layers of V1. Although their spatial distributions were rather similar, the two enzymes did not always overlap. The histochemical reaction also revealed two different...
