Adoption of Maize Production Technologies in the Coastal Lowlands of Kenya AgEcon
Wekesa, E.; Mwangi, Wilfred; Verkuijl, Hugo; Danda, Milton Kengo; De Groote, Hugo.
Maize is the major food crop grown in the coastal region of Kenya and constitutes a major component of the diet of the population in the region. However, average yields are far below the potential for the region and low production levels create serious food deficits. Over the years, new technologies have been introduced but adoption has remained low, especially for fertilizer. This paper examined current maize-farming practices and technological and socioeconomic factors that influenced adoption in the Kilifi and Kwale Districts of the Coast Province, that together account for half of maize production in the region. The study found low adoption levels for improved maize varieties and technology, especially fertilizer, among farmers in the area. Farmers...

Comparison of milk production costs among EU members AgEcon
Mach, Jiri; Rezbova, Helena.
This paper attempts to identify factors which influence the effectiveness of milk production. The basic aim is to compare levels of costs in the dairy industry between Czech and European producers. The average cost per 100 kg ECM milk is determined from data provided by the European Dairy Farmers association (EDF). The total costs per 1 litre of Czech milk producers are on the European average level with high production efficiency. The problem is only in the utilisation of basic production factors, especially land and labour.

Estimating the Economic Value of Specific Characteristics Associated with Angus Bulls Sold at Auction AgEcon
Jones, Rodney D.; Turner, Tyler; Dhuyvetter, Kevin C.; Marsh, Thomas L..
The genetic traits of a purebred bull convey the reproductive and economic value to buyers. This study examines and compares the value of actual production weights (birth, weaning, and yearling weight), production expected progeny differences (EPDs) (birth, weaning, milk, and yearling), and ultrasound EPDs (carcass quality predictors) for purebred Angus bulls sold at auction. One EPD, birth weight, was valued by buyers more than its corresponding actual weight, though both actual weights and EPDs significantly impact price. Predictors of carcass quality were important in determining price. Finally, several individual animal factors and sale characteristics were significant in determining price.

Interactions between the Agricultural Sector and the HIV/AIDS Pandemic: Implications for Agricultural Policy AgEcon
Jayne, Thomas S.; Villarreal, Marcela; Pingali, Prabhu L.; Hemrich, Gunter.
This paper considers how the design of agricultural policies and programmes might be modified to better achieve policy objectives in the context of severe HIV epidemics and underscores the central role of agricultural policy in mitigating the spread and impacts of the epidemic. Based on projections of future demographic change in the hardest-hit countries of eastern and southern Africa, HIV/AIDS is likely to have the following effects on the agricultural sector: (1) increased rural inequality caused by disproportionately severe effects of AIDS on relatively poor households; (2) a reduction in household assets and wealth, leading to less capital-intensive cropping systems for severely affected communities and households; and (3) problems in transferring...

Market Integration of Household Plots in Ukraine - The Impact of Social Capital AgEcon
Wolz, Axel; Fritzsch, Jana; Buchenrieder, Gertrud; Nedoborovskyy, Andriy.
Following the two rounds of land reform in Ukraine since independence, household plot farmers emerged as the major suppliers to agricultural production. But they form a very heterogeneous group. Not all of them are equally successful, economically, and integrated to markets. In general, a varying adoption of production factors is identified as being of influence. In this paper, we argue that social capital is an additional factor contributing to higher agricultural incomes. We tested our thesis using primary evidence from a survey in Ukraine among 255 household plot farmers in 2006. Based on 24 social capital indicators we deduced four separate index variables linking the social capital dimension of form, i.e. structural and cognitive, with the social...

THE IMPACT OF CONSERVATION TILLAGE ON THE PRODUCTIVITY AND STABILITY OF MAIZE CROPPING SYSTEMS: A CASE STUDY IN WESTERN MEXICO AgEcon
Jourdain, Damien; Scopel, Eric; Affholder, Francois.
This paper examines the economics of introducing conservation tillage into maize cropping systems in the state of Jalisco, in the western part of Mexico. A stochastic cost-benefit analysis (SCBA) of introducing conservation tillage in two contrasting agro-climatic zones in the four main maize management systems in the area was carried out. The SCBA takes into account the effects of conservation tillage on average returns and fully evaluates its potential risk-reducing aspect. The SCBA results were then used for a stochastic dominance analysis to evaluate farmers' incentives, characterized by their aversion to risk. The analysis reveals that although conservation tillage is economically viable, cash-constrained farmers, especially in the dry areas, may not...

Transformações na agricultura brasileira: uma abordagem espacial dos Censos Agropecuários de 1996 e 2006 AgEcon
Alcantara Filho, José Luiz; Scalco, Paulo Roberto; Gomes, Adriano Provezano.

Wheat Facts and Futures 2009 AgEcon
For nearly half a century, the international wheat breeding system has delivered improved high yielding varieties of wheat that created (along with rice) the Green Revolution and underpinned strong growth in wheat productivity in irrigated and rainfed, developed and underdeveloped, regions. Future priorities for breeding and complementary sciences will still include yield but will also diversify in response to changing market demands and growing environments, particulary in developing countries. It is argued that in the coming decades research on wheat quality characteristics will become increasingly important to plant breeders, whose work will be supported by the development of markers and advanced tools from molecular biology. Breeders will have to...

การประเมินความสัมพันธ์และประสิทธิภาพของปัจจัยการผลิตต่อผลผลิตข้าวในเขตจังหวัดพิษณุโลกโดยแบบจำลองทางการเกษตร Thai Agricultural
Wanwisa Pansak; Wipa Homhaul.
Rice is a major food crop and cash crop in Thailand. In 2011, average rice production in Thailand was about 460 kg per rai, which is considered as low productivity comparing with other countries (Rice Department, 2554). The reasons relate to various factors affecting production such as soil condition, weather condition, irrigation, and farmer managements in each area. The objective of this study is to investigate the deep relationships between quantitative inputs and rice production by an agricultural model (WaNuLCAS model) as a tool for analysis of their relationships. In this study, 9 districts of Phitsanulok province are considered. The areas of study are divided into external and internal irrigation. Within this research, we have created database of...
