Production Performance Indicators with Externalities: Environmentally-Adjusted Productivity and Efficiency Indicators of a Sample of Semi-Intensive Shrimp Farms in Mexico AgEcon
Martinez-Cordero, Francisco Javier; Leung, PingSun.
Sustainability in operations is a key consideration when discussing aquaculture’s current and future role in providing food and increasing coastal and rural employment and incomes, among other social benefits. An important problem from the economics point of view is how the economics point of view is how the externalities generated by aquaculture and those that the industry suffers are internalized. This paper extends the analysis reported in Martinez-Cordero and leung (2004) for a group of semi-intensive shrimp farms in Mexico. Modifications to the traditional Total Factor Productivity (TFP) and Technical Efficiency (TE) indicators are carried out in order to incorporate in the evaluation the environmental effects of aquacultural activities. In a...

The effects of organic acid (double-coated calcium butyrate base supplement) on performance and carcass traits of broiler chickens were assessed in three groups (PC, NC1 and NC2). The organic acid was added in three phases of feeding (1-21d, 22-35d, 36-42d) in PC, NC1 (PC deduction 40 kcal ME/kg and both methionine and lysine 1.5%) and NC2 (PC deduction 60 kcal ME/kg and both methionine and lysine 2.2%). Organic acid was added in PC with three period dosages 750-500-500 ppm and in both NC1 and NC2 1000-750-750 ppm. Addition organic acid in three controls (PC, NC1, NC2) showed similar performance of body weight gain, survival rate, feed conversion ratio and productive index, except for early starter period (1-21d of age). Broilers fed with organic acid...

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of an exogenous emulsifier on performance and carcass traits of broiler. The exogenous emulsifier (sodium strearoyl-2-lactylate) was added 0.05% to the 3 levels reduction (0.70, 1.00 and 1.30 %) rice bran oil from control diets. The results showed that body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, survival rate, productive index and feed cost/kg BW (FCG) were similar to the added emulsifier and control fed groups for 3 periods of testing (1-21, 22-35 and 36-42d of age). However, over period of 1-42 d of age, birds fed with exogenous emulsifier 0.05% to 0.07% reduction rice bran oil from control diets showed improvement and better (P<0.05) FCR and showed higher (P<0.05) than no added...
