A Plastid Gene Phylogeny of the Yam Genus, Dioscorea: Roots, Fruits and Madagascar Naturalis

Following recent phylogenetic studies of the families and genera of Dioscoreales, the identification of monophyletic infrageneric taxa in the pantropical genus Dioscorea is a priority. A phylogenetic analysis based on sequence data from the plastid genes rbcL and matK is presented, using 67 species of Dioscorea and covering all the main Old World and selected New World lineages. The analysis used 14 outgroup taxa, including Trichopus Gaertn., Tacca J.R. & G. Forster, Stenomeris Planch., Burmannia L. and Thismia Griff. As microalgas são organismos unicelulares fotossintéticos que possuem estrutura celular eucariótica e podem apresentar-se em formas coloniais ou livres. Estes organismos vem sendo amplamente estudados para aplicação em biorremediação e em biorrefinarias. Seu potencial biotecnológico destaca-se na produção de biocombustíveis e bioprodutos, por apresentarem características como alta taxa de crescimento e alta capacidade de armazenamento de substâncias de reserva, como lipídios e amido. Molecular phylogeny of Dioscorea (Dioscoreaceae) in East and Southeast Asia Naturalis

The phylogenetic relationships of Dioscorea, including sections Botryosicyos, Combilium, Enantiophyllum, Lasiophyton, Opsophyton, Shannicorea and Stenophora, are reconstructed with chloroplast trnL-F, matK, rbcL and atpB-rbcL sequence data, covering a total of 72 accessions including 48 ingroup species and five outgroup species from East and Southeast Asia. The seven Asian sections do reflect the genetic relationships among the species that they include. In summary, D. sect. Combilium and sect. Shannicorea are recognized as closely related sections with moderate support. The results also support Burkills treatment of subsect. Euopsophyton (D. bulbifera) as sect. Opsophyton and subsect. Phylogenetic position and taxonomic disposition of Turraea breviflora (Meliaceae), a hitherto enigmatic species Naturalis

For decades, the rare Malesian shrublet hitherto called Turraea breviflora, was the only species of the pantropical family Meliaceae which could not confidently be placed in a genus. Previous morphological re-investigation led to the exclusion of the species from Turraea and suggested possibly close links with Munronia. In this study, parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of DNA sequence data from plastid rbcL and nuclear ITS rDNA were used to infer the phylogenetic position of T. breviflora and its affinities to other representatives of the family. Since the Monocots II meeting in 1998, significant new data have been published that enhance our systematic knowledge of Cyperaceae. Phylogenetic studies in the family have also progressed steadily. For this study, a parsimony analysis was carried out using all rbcL sequences currently available for Cyperaceae, including data for two new genera. One of the four subfamilies (Caricoideae) and seven of the 14 tribes (Bisboeckelereae, Cariceae, Cryptangieae, Dulichieae, Eleocharideae, Sclerieae, Trilepideae) are monophyletic. Taxonomic studies of Cheiropleuria (Dipteridaceae) Naturalis

Morphological and molecular studies are made on the fern genus Cheiropleuria, which was treated in the past as monotypic. We describe C. parva, a new species from Borneo, and separate C. integrifolia, distributed in Japan and Taiwan and probably in China too, from Southeast Asian C. bicuspis. The three species differ from each other in the size, shape and texture of lamina, divergence angles between lobes, frequency of bilobed leaves, and spore size and morphology. Cheiropleuria parva is distinct from C. bicuspis populations sympatric on Mt Kinabalu in the leaves of juvenile and adult plants, suggesting reproductive isolation. Nucleotide differences in the rbcL gene support separation of the three species.

The genus Callophyllis (Kallymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) from the central-south Chilean coast (33° to 41° S), with the description of two new species RChHN

The taxonomic status of the species in the genus Callophyllis Kützing (Kallymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) from central-south Chile (33° to 41° S) is examined on the basis of morphological and molecular evidence. Of the four species originally cited for central Chile, C. variegata, C. pinnata, C. atrosanguinea and C. laciniata, only the presence of C. variegata has been confirmed in this study. C. pinnata reported from Chile is found to be different from C. pinnata described from California, and it is here newly described as C. concepcionensis sp. nov. C. atrosanguinea from southern Chile (including C. linguata from the Antarctic Peninsula) is distinct from the species called C. atrosanguinea from central-south Chile, the latter which is here described as C....
