“Beu Ner Moo” rainfed aromatic highland rice varieties were planted on rice terrace by hilltribe Pwakin-nyaw (Karen). The name means aromatic rice which were selected by Pwakin-nyaw farmers long time ago and still grown as a special varieties until now. Due to their impurity, pure line selection was the breeding methodology and geographical indications (GI) was the way to increase their value. There were three steps to develop Beu Ner Moo. 1) Collecting 48 Beu Ner Moo rice varieties from 4 districts of Chiang Mai including Mae Ai, Chiang Dao, Chai Prakan and Mae Chaem. 2) Purifying Beu Ner Moo rice by pure line selection according to their morphological characters and can be classified into 10 groups.
