A RENEWAL THEORETIC APPROACH TO ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARD SETTING AgEcon
Batabyal, Amitrajeet A..
The process of environmental regulation is usually a two-step one. In the first step, a standard for environmental quality is set. Then, in the second step, a regulatory mechanism is put in place to achieve the standard. In this paper I show how renewal theory can be used to set the quality standard optimally.

Nutritional Value of Marandú Palisade Grass According to Increasing Coexistence Periods with Weeds Planta Daninha
BELLÉ,J.R.; MARCHI,S.R.; MARTINS,D.; SOUSA,A.C.; PINHEIRO,G.H.R..
ABSTRACT: This research aimed at evaluating the effect of increasing coexistence periods with weeds on the nutritional components of the forage grass Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandú under pasture renewal conditions. The experiment was arranged in randomized blocks with four replications, and treatments were represented by eight coexistence periods, namely: 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 and 120 days after seedling emergence. A phytosociologic evaluation was performed on the weed community at the end of the coexistence periods; later, weeds were eliminated by an herbicide formulated with aminopyralid+2,4-D (40+320 g L-1) at 2.5 L ha-1, applied in post-emergence. The fodder plants were evaluated at the end of the experimental period as for leaf-stem ratio,...

Renewal and accumulation of a Lanice conchilega (Pallas) population in the bale des Veys, western Bay of Seine ArchiMer
Ropert, Michel; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
Since the mid-1980s, an increase in abundance of the annelid polychaete Lanice conchilega (Pallas) (Annelida: Polychacta, Terebellidae) has been observed in the Bay des Veys (western Bay of Seine). The first particularity of this population is that it is strictly limited to the eastern side of the bay, in an oyster aquaculture area. Its proliferation (over 7 000 ind.m(-2)) has had a significant impact on the local aquaculture. Several studies have been carried out since 1993; monthly monitoring of population densities and size structure has demonstrated the lack of significant juvenile recruitment between 1993 and 1996. In terms of geographical occupation, maps of population spatial distributions were drawn in 1995 and 1998. They showed an increase in...

Revolt and Remember: How the Shimshal Nature Trust Develops and Sustains Social-Ecological Resilience in Northern Pakistan Ecology and Society
Abidi-Habib, Mehjabeen; Government College University Lahore; mamie@wol.net.pk; Lawrence, Anna; Oxford University; anna.lawrence@eci.ox.ac.uk.
The Shimshal Nature Trust is an indigenous institution rooted in a thriving and dynamic culture that links the local ecology and society. It has deployed identity, traditional knowledge, science, and institutional innovation to adapt to outside challenges without destroying local commons management. This paper reviews scholarly debate on natural resource management and uses resilience theory to examine this complex adaptive system. Two disturbances to Shimshal resilience prompted by a national park and a new road are traced. Shimshali responses include social processes of learning, knowledge systems, and renewal. Ways in which adaptive renewal cycles involve Revolt, a short, fast reaction, and Remember, a larger, slower cascade, are put in perspective....

Understanding Differences Between Financial Distress and Bankruptcy AgEcon
Platt, Harlan D.; Platt, Marjorie B..
For the most part, research purporting to address the issue of financial distress has actually studied samples of bankrupt companies. Financial distress and bankruptcy are different. In contrast, this paper starts with a sample of companies that are financially distressed but not yet bankrupt. The sample was obtained by screening the Compustat industry database with a three-tiered identification system. The screen bifurcated companies into financially and non-financially distressed groups. A multi-tiered screen reduces the incidence of mistakenly identifying a non-distressed company as financially distressed. The paper then compares factors indicating the likelihood of future bankruptcies to those indicating future financial distress. To do this, an early...
