Aphididae (Hemiptera) on ornamental plants in Córdoba (Argentina) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Szpeiner,Alfonsina.
In 30 surveys across Cordoba city and surroundings (Argentina) I recorded, from November 2001 to May 2002, a total of 109 ornamental plants infested with aphid colonies. Surveys were conducted in the local botanical garden as well as homestead gardens and nurseries. Seventeen species of aphids were identified, 4 of which are new species in the area, from 47 ornamental plants. In a total of 59 plant/aphid associations, 38 new associations were found. I present the first record of aphids colonizing Cactaceae in Argentina. Most aphid colonies were medium and a high proportion (more than 40%) showed alate individuals. The most frequent aphid species, Aphis gossypii Glover and Aphis craccivora Koch were especially associated with the most frequent damages:...

Diversity of cave bats in the brazilian tropical dry forest of Rio Grande do Norte State Mastozool. neotrop.
Vargas-Mena,Juan Carlos; Cordero-Schmidt,Eugenia; de Medeiros Bento,Diego; Rodriguez-Herrera,Bernal; Medellín,Rodrigo A; Venticinque,Eduardo M.
Caves are important roosts for bats in karstic areas and play a critical role in the protection of bat populations. In the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in northeastern Brazil, cave-dwelling bats are poorly studied. Moreover, the state contains more than 900 caves, mainly in the Caatinga biome, that may offer important roosts for local bat populations. Thus, to gain a first insight into the richness, diversity, and colony size of cave-bats in the state, we sampled 13 caves through active search and captures with mist nets. Sixteen species from five families were recorded, and the biggest colonies belonged to Pteronotus gymnonotus and Phyllostomus discolor. Furna Feia cave was the richest, with 10 species. Our results showed that Rio Grande do Norte is home...

Diversity of mycobiota in colonies of different species of leaf-cutting ants and sampling sites across Argentina Ecología austral
Marfetan,Jorge A; Folgarait,Patricia J.
Attine ants are a monophyletic group comprising more than 230 species, distributed exclusively in the New World. All higher Attini ants depend on the cultivation of fungus gardens for food, and those gardens are continuously exposed to alien microorganisms. The present work describes, for the first time, the composition, relative frequency and the richness of the fungal species comprising the mycobiota from the garden of the most abundant Acromyrmex species from different regions of Argentina. We also compared, using a multivariate approach, the mycobiota composition with the purpose of testing two hypotheses: 1) whether mycobiota is defined by the ant species, or 2) whether mycobiota is determined by the geographical region. We found that each fungal...

Does habitat specificity by frugivorous birds result in uneven seed rain within Bolivian mixed plantations? Ecología austral
Montaño-Centellas,Flavia A..
Small-scale habitat specificity by frugivorous birds might affect their patterns of use of space and, consequently, may influence the range of habitats over which seeds are disseminated. These differences may translate into non-redundancy among bird assemblages using different habitats. I tested this hypothesis by capturing birds in two habitats within shaded mixed plantations in a Bolivian Andean forest (plantation interior and plantation edges with the forest matrix) and comparing the seeds found in their droppings. I found that, despite differences in bird assemblage composition and activity, the overall seed rain was similar among habitats: the seed rain in edges was only slightly richer in species than in the plantation interior, but species...

Études méthodologiques développées à l'échelle nationale. Livrable 1 – Confiance et précision pour l'indicateur M-AMBI ArchiMer
Brun, Mélanie.
The index used by France to assess the quality of coastal water bodies of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), for the Channel-Atlantic coast and for the quality element "soft substratum benthic invertebrates" is the M-AMBI. In their work, Sigovini et al. (2013) compare several methods of calculating M-AMBI and alternative indices with the values of M-AMBI. Their results show strong correlations between the values of the M-AMBI and those of the proposed alternatives. In a first step, the present work aims to compare M-AMBI values, obtained during the application of the assessment procedure of the quality of coastal water bodies for the Channel-Atlantic coast on the 2007 and 2010 data, with the values obtained for various alternative calculations and...

Lutinski,Junir Antonio; Lutinski,Cladis Juliana; Iop,Samanta; Mello Garcia,Flávio Roberto.
This study evaluated the efficiency as a tool for ant survey of a sampling protocol composed of six methods, and examined the role of environmental features on the efficiency of methods complementarity . We applied them in three environments (pine, eucalyptus and native forest) in the National Forest of Chapecó and the effect of the characteristics of these environments on methods complementarity. The sampling methods were pitfall traps, two types of bait (sardines and glucose), sweep net, entomological umbrella and Malaise trap. The protocol efficiency of the protocol in the ant inventory was evaluated based on rarefaction curves, richness estimators and records of occurrence of ants. The protocol captured the greatest richness on native forest...

The vast extent of the Amazon Basin has historically restricted the study of its tree communities to the local and regional scales. Here, we provide empirical data on the commonness, rarity, and richness of lowland tree species across the entire Amazon Basin and Guiana Shield (Amazonia), collected in 1170 tree plots in all major forest types. Extrapolations suggest that Amazonia harbors roughly 16,000 tree species, of which just 227 (1.4%) account for half of all trees. Most of these are habitat specialists and only dominant in one or two regions of the basin. We discuss some implications of the finding that a small group of species—less diverse than the North American tree flora—accounts for half of the world’s most diverse tree community.

Measure and mis-measure of species diversity in deep-sea chemosynthetic communities ArchiMer
Gauthier, Olivier; Sarrazin, Jozee; Desbruyeres, Daniel.
Our knowledge of species diversity in deep-sea chemosynthetic communities has come a long way since their discovery in the late 1970s, However, their study poses serious challenges that are linked to their remoteness, the variable selectivity and effectiveness of sampling tools in different conditions, a lack of consensus on the size compartments and sieve size used in practice, and the persistent discovery of species that are previously unknown to science. Still, with increasing accessibility and new sampling tools, quantitative data are becoming both more frequent and extensive, reducing limitations in the estimation and comparison of species diversity. Here, we review the literature for common difficulties encountered in the measurement and comparison...

Rapid changes in tree composition and biodiversity: consequences of dams on dry seasonal forests RChHN
Vale,Vagner S; Schiavini,I; Prado-júnior,J A; Oliveira,Ana P; Gusson,André E.
BACKGROUND: Plants in a seasonal environment that become close to the artificial lake after dams construction may have enhanced growth or die due to the new conditions. Changes in mortality or growth rates lead to changes in community diversity, and we do not know if the community functions will change; our main hypothesis was that a few years after impoundment, species richness and diversity will increase because the increased supply of water would favor the establishment of water-associated species. Therefore, we evaluated the consequences of proximity of three dry seasonal forests to the water table after damming, with a dynamic evaluation of the species studied to understand changes in diversity in these areas. We sampled 60 plots of 20x10 m in each...

Structure and dynamics of the periphytic algae community of Iraí reservoir, Paraná State, Brazil - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v32i1.3764 Biological Sciences
Moresco, Carina; UEM; Rodrigues, Liliana; UEM.
In order to analyze the structure and dynamics of the periphytic community in Iraí reservoir, an eutrophic environment, samples were taken in two seasons: summer (April) and winter (September) of 2002, in littoral areas from three regions of the reservoir (upper, intermediary and lower). Rooted aquatic vegetation were used as sampling substrates, because they were found in all sampling sites. A total of 297 species was recorded (225 in April, 73 exclusive taxa; and 224 in September, with 72 exclusive taxa). Bacillariophyceae predominated in all regions in both seasons, in species number, as well in density. There were differences in richness among zones; intermediary and lower regions were more similar, mainly in September. The periphytic algae density...

This study examined temporal and spatial (vertical) variations of composition, richness and abundance of the planktonic ciliates community in an urban and eutrophic lake, as well as identified the limnological factors involved in determining the patterns observed. To this end, samples of ciliates and measures of limnological variables were taken at different depths and hydrological periods. 35 ciliate species were identified, among which 14 species occurred in all periods and strata, being Prostomatida the most specious, followed by Gymnostomatida, Oligotrichida, Peritrichida, and Scuticociliatida. The patterns found for composition, abundance and species richness evidenced a vertical and temporal variation of these attributes. However, in general the...
