A comparison of three methods to estimate variations in the relative abundance of moutain vizcachas (Lagidium viscacia) in the High Andes ecosystems Mastozool. neotrop.
Lucherini,Mauro; Reppucci,Juan I.; Luengos Vidal,Estela.
Mountain vizcachas are large rodents that constitute the main prey of the High Andes meso-carnivores. We compared the line transect pellet count, observation rate and photographic rate methods to estimate the relative abundance of Mountain vizcachas in the High Andes ecosystems. Although a more formal validation based on the comparison with true abundances is desirable, our results suggested that these simple and affordable indices are promising methods, especially if protocols and sampling efforts are carefully standardized. We recommend the use of photographic rates, which are likely to provide the most reliable estimates, especially where Mountain vizcachas are active at night.

A radiographic method to estimate lung volume and its use in small mammals Biol. Res.
CANALS,MAURICIO; OLIVARES,RICARDO; ROSENMANN,Mario.
In this paper we develop a method to estimate lung volume using chest x-rays of small mammals. We applied this method to assess the lung volume of several rodents. We showed that a good estimator of the lung volume is: V*L = 0.496 · V RX ≈ 1/2·V RX , where V RX is a measurement obtained from the x-ray that represents the volume of a rectangular box containing the lungs and mediastinum organs. The proposed formula may be interpreted as the volume of an ellipsoid formed by both lungs joined at their bases. When that relationship was used to estimate lung volume, values similar to those expected from allometric relationship were found in four rodents. In two others, M. musculus and R. norvegicus, lung volume was similar to reported data, although...

ANTAGONISM AGAINST VIBRIO CHOLERAE BY BACTERIAL DIFFUSIBLE COMPOUND IN THE FECAL MICROBIOTA OF RODENTS Rev. Microbiol.
Silva,Simone Helena da; Vieira,Enio Cardillo; Nicoli,Jacques Robert.
In an ex vivo agar plate assay, we monitored the appearance of an inhibitory halo against Vibrio cholerae from the feces of Wistar and Fischer rats aged 10 to 42 days. The frequency of Wistar rats showing halo increased from 0% (10 days) to a maximum of 80.0% (29 days) and then decreased to 53.3% (42 days). A similar pattern was obtained with Fischer rats but with a lower intensity (maximum frequency of 50.0% by day 36). In a separate experiment, when Wistar rats were fed a low-protein diet for 7 days, the inhibitory halo decreased drastically. Three apparently different colony morphologies were isolated from the dominant fecal microbiota: a facultative anaerobe (FAN) and two strict anaerobes (SAN). The ex vivo inhibitory test showed a halo around the...

Cytogenetics and redescription of Graomys (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) from Chumbicha, Catamarca, Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Lanzone,Cecilia; Novillo,Agustina; Suárez,Natalia S.; Ojeda,Ricardo A..
The taxonomy, phylogenetic relationships and distribution of the genus Graomys are confusing. In this note we report karyotypic data for specimens of Graomys collected in Chumbicha, Catamarca Province, Argentina. Their karyotypes agree with G. centralis with 2n = 42. The individuals from Chumbicha are similar in morphology to G. griseoflavus but smaller. Our results suggest that Chumbicha's specimens are conspecific with G. medius. Moreover, we propose to synonymize G. medius with G. centralis. Other data of the genus suggest that the name G. chacoensis should be applied to specimens with 2n = 42.

Dustbathing and intra-sexual communication of social degus, Octodon degus (Rodentia:Octodontidae) RChHN
EBENSPERGER,LUIS A..
I observed the behavior of captive male and female Octodon degus to assess if dustbathing behavior plays a role in social communication among unfamiliar, same-sex conspecifics. Degus of a first group (control responders) were individually exposed during 10-min tests to an arena containing loose, clean soil. I compared the latency to first dustbathing as well as the overall frequency of dustbathing events recorded to control responders with the corresponding figures recorded to a second group of degus (experimental responders) after they were individually introduced into the same arena but with soil previously used for dustbathing by a same-sex conspecific (depositor). I also compared the location of dustbathing events by experimental responders with that...

Efficacy of anticoagulant drugs as rodenticides and genetic variation on Vkorc1 of Mus musculus from Buenos Aires province (Argentina) JBAG
Espinosa,M.B.
The relationship between anticoagulant rodenticides and the gene for vitamin K epoxide reductase has been extensively studied The significance of mutations in Vkorc1 on the degree of response to anticoagulants is controversial. The implication of the VKORC1 function in pest control drives the attention to a wide range of factors that may be influencing the resistance to rodenticides, an issue that will be discussed in this article. Anticoagulants are used as rodenticides as well as to improve human health. The interactions between VKORC1 and CYP4F18 (cytochrome P450) are complex. It is likely that the coagulation response may be due to a diverse expression of the Vkorc1 gene and its interaction with the expression of Cyp4f18, and to the polymorphisms...

Efficiency of four trap types in sampling small mammals in forest fragments, Mato Grosso, Brazil Mastozool. neotrop.
Santos-Filho,Manoel; da Silva,Dionei J.; Sanaiotti,Tânia M..
We sampled the small mammal community inhabiting semi-deciduous forest fragments in Mato Grosso, Brazil, using 4 different types of traps, Tomahawk, Sherman, snap, and pitfall, in order to evaluate the efficiency of different trap types in sampling efforts. During our study, we captured a total of 984 individuals of 27 species over 33 800 trap/nights. Sherman traps captured a significantly greater abundance of individuals and higher species richness than the other 3 types of traps. The Tomahawk and snap traps exhibited similar capture rates, in both the number of individuals and species captured. Pitfall traps captured the fewest numbers of individuals and species and were the only trap type to have different, although not significant, capture rates...

Environmental and dam effects on cannibalism in Wistar rat litters Biological Sciences
Tarôco, Graziela; Gaya, Leila de Genova; Resende, Daniela Regina; Santos, Ivan Carlos dos; Madureira, Ana Paula.
The factors related to cannibalistic behavior of dams in a Wistar rat colony are identified and analyzed. The maternal genetic effects were tested as a random effect by the method of generalized linear models. The season at parturition, the dam´s age at parturition and the density of the room at parturition were tested as fixed effects, whereas the litter size at birth was tested as a co-variable. The genetic effect of the dam was significant for the number of cannibalized pups. Although the season at parturition, the dam´s age and room density on the day of parturition were not individually significant (p > 0.05), most of the interactions between the variation sources were significant (p < 0.05). Cannibalism occurred mostly in dams aged over 241...

ENVIRONMENTAL ENRICHMENT DURING EARLY POSTNATAL DEVELOPMENT DECREASES PARVALBUMIN EXPRESSION IN THE RAT SOMATOSENSORY CORTEX International Journal of Morphology
Inzunza,Oscar; Bravo,Hermes; Fernández,Víctor.
In the rat brain, parvalbumin (PV) expression starts on postnatal day 8 and comprises a heterogeneous population of nonpyramidal GABAergic neurons. In the present work, an immunohistochemical study was done on control and experimental rats submitted to enriched environmental conditions between postnatal days 3 to 18 or 3 to 24. Counts of PV+ neurons were made in the dorsomedial and in the ventrolateral regions of the somatosensory cortex. In control animals, PV+ neurons reached a peak on day 24 declining towards day 120. In these rats a peculiar distribution pattern was detected in which immunoreactive neurons are more numerous in the dorsomedial than ventrolateral regions as well in infragranular than supragranular layers and in posterior regions than...

Gut size flexibility in rodents: what we know, and don't know, after a century of research RChHN
NAYA,DANIEL E.
Phenotypic plasticity comprises a central concept in the understanding of how organisms interact with their environment, and thus, is a central topic in ecology and evolution. A particular case of phenotypic plasticity is phenotypic flexibility, which refers to reversible change in organism traits due to changes in internal or external environmental conditions. Flexibility of digestive features has been analyzed for more than a century in a myriad of different species and contexts. Studies in rodents on gut size flexibility have been developed mainly from two different áreas of the biological sciences, physiology and ecology. However, as for several other topics related with physiological ecology, both kinds of studies largely developed along sepárate...

Hemoglobin affinity in Andean rodents Biol. Res.
OSTOJIC,HRVOJ; CIFUENTES,VERONICA; MONGE,CARLOS.
Blood hemoglobin oxygen affinity (P50) was measured in three Andean species and in the laboratory rat (control), all raised near sea level. Chinchilla lanigera (Molina, 1792) has an altitudinal habitat range from low Andean slopes up to 3000 m., while Chinchilla brevicaudata (Waterhouse, 1848) has an altitudinal range from 3000 to 5000 m. The laboratory type guinea pig, wild type guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), (Waterhouse, 1748), and laboratory rat (Rattus norvegicus) were also raised at sea level. The Andean species had high hemoglobin oxygen affinities (low P50) compared with the rat. Chinchilla brevicaudata had a higher affinity than Chinchilla lanigera. The wild type guinea pig had a higher affinity than the laboratory type. As has been shown in other...
