AGRÁR-MUNKANÉLKÜLISÉG ÉS A TERÜLETI EGYENLŐTLENSÉGEK MAGYARORSZÁGON AgEcon
Ritter, Krisztian.
Although many times the new values of rural category has been emphasized in the literature, rural areas show significant disadvantages in general. As a main reason, in Hungary - partly due to the political and economical transition - the role of agriculture in employment has been notably decreased. In Hungary the changing role of agriculture, the rural unemployment and the territorial distribution of unemployment were analyzed numbers of times in the last decades, while there were no researches in agricultural unemployment and it’s territorial characteristics. First goal of the paper is the determination of rural micro-regions that show significant and permanent agricultural job-loss and agricultural unemployment during the period 1990-2003. Comparison...

Analysis of public policies: implementation for environmental management in Brazil: the contribution of social network theory. Repositório Alice
GIGLIO, E.; LUIZ, A. J. B.; NAJBERG, E..
Abstract: The paper discusses the implementation of agro-environmental policies in municipalities through concepts of social networks, and proposes a model to do research in the area. The basic assertion is that development, success, or problems of technical actions of implementation are directly influenced by social relationships among actors involved in the task. The article tries to reach two objectives. The first is the application of social network theory to public policies, which is unusual in the literature. The second, as a result, is to present a tool specifically designed to investigate the validity of assumptions that has been tested in four Brazilian municipalities, showing applicability and an ability to generate data for questions about...

Are poor, remote areas left behind in agricultural development: the case of Tanzania AgEcon
Minot, Nicholas.
In Tanzania, as in many other developing countries, the conventional wisdom is that economic reforms may have stimulated economic growth, but that the benefits of this growth have been uneven, favoring urban households and farmers with good market access. This idea, although quite plausible, has rarely been tested empirically. In this paper, we develop a new approach to measuring trends in poverty and apply it to Tanzania in order to explore the distributional aspects of economic growth and the relationship between rural poverty and market access. We find that, between 1991 and 2003, a period of extensive economic reforms, the overall rate of poverty fell about 9 percentage points. The degree of poverty reduction was similar between rural and urban areas,...

Biogas and Biomass Implementation in Rural Areas BABT
Sandim,Álvaro A.; Batista,Alexandre G.; Bareta,Maria Luiza E.; Betini,Roberto C.; Pepplow,Luiz Amilton.
Abstract Advances in energy demand in rural areas cannot be dissociated from agricultural modernization, large estates, mechanization of labor and reduced investment in small production. The use of biogas together with biomass are the most cost-effective ways for the small producer, as it has a high calorific value. In the case of biogas the procedure is performed by combining a compressor and a chiller, allowing the gas enter the reactor and burn together with the air stream. The use of these techniques is an auxiliary way to reduce the cost of the producer to produce a certain crop, besides allowing a participation in the final energy supply, so that the utilities have an alternative to distribute the surplus energy to another region, serving thus a...

Classification of rural areas in Europe using social sustainability indicators AgEcon
Chatzinikolaou, Parthena; Manos, Basil D.; Bournaris, Thomas.
Social sustainability is “one of the three legs of the sustainability stool” (the other two are environmental and economic. There is limited literature that focuses on social sustainability to the extent that a comprehensive study of this concept is still missing. As a result, there have been very few attempts to define social sustainability as an independent dimension of sustainable development. Social sustainability is related to social capital, social inclusion, social exclusion and social cohesion in rural economies, terms that are measured by relevant social sustainability indicators. This paper aims to measure these indicators and to compare them. In order to measure these indicators, a household survey carried out in the context of the research...

Cohesion Policy for rural areas after 2013: A rationale derived from the EDORA project (European Development Opportunities in Rural Areas) - ESPON 2013 Project 2013/1/2 AgEcon
Copus, Andrew K.; Shucksmith, Mark; Dax, Thomas; Meredith, David.
The starting point of the EDORA project was the recognition that, rather than becoming more uniform in character, rural Europe is, in many ways, becoming increasingly diverse, implying new challenges and opportunities. The project’s overarching aim was to examine the process of differentiation, in order to better understand how EU policy can enable rural areas to build upon their specific potentials to achieve ‘smart, sustainable and inclusive growth’. The first phase of the project consisted of a literature review in order to establish a conceptual framework for subsequent empirical analysis. This identified a very wide range of aspects of contemporary rural change. In order to manage this complexity, and so that it could be communicated simply and...

Communication Processes in Agro-environmental Policy Development and Decision-Making: Case Study Sachsen-Anhalt AgEcon
Prager, Katrin; Nagel, Uwe Jens.
The development of a decision support approach with regard to agro-environmental programmes is part of a larger research project on agricultural transformation and structural change processes. Research objective are improved communication processes and an enhanced quality of political decision-making. The investigation is based on the assumption that the success of agro-environmental programmes depends largely on their acceptance by all major stakeholders. This implies an early integration of varying interests in the decision-making process. Introducing participatory approaches into a bureaucratic setting poses particular problems. In order to achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness, the introduction of interactive modelling approaches has to be...

DESIGUALDADE ENTRE RICOS E POBRES NO ACESSO À EDUCAÇÃO NO BRASIL RURAL E URBANO AgEcon

Dichotomy between urban and rural areas: statistical data may not reveal the synergy between these two existing spaces. Repositório Alice
CAMPOS, W. P.; SILVEIRA, M. A. da; CALIARI, M.; WANDER, A. E..
An analysis of several indicators, socio-economic and environmental, through the Dashboard of Sustainability is possible to tell which category has the highest rate of farmer sustainability, whether smallholders or monoculture. However, the secondary data available in Brazil today does not support a thorough analysis of the participation of each actor and to which the interconnection between the actors and their synergy in local economic activity. Since, given the narrowing between urban and rural, the statistical data available are not able to demonstrate the extent to which gives the rural-urban dichotomy. Thus, it is relevant to point out and discuss ways to provide consistent statistical data and be, in fact, able to demonstrate the local reality of a...

„Doppelte Politikverflechtung“ als Bestimmungsfaktor der Agrarstruktur- und der Agrarumweltpolitik in der BR Deutschland AgEcon
Mehl, Peter; Plankl, Reiner.
A large portion of the agri-structural policies and agri-environmental policies in the Federal Republic of Germany are decided within the framework of complex decision-making structures and fiscal responsibility at different political levels (the federal states, the national government, and the European Union), resulting in “double-interlocked federalism”. This paper describes the specific institutional configuration and its historical development, and presents a financial analysis of the development plans for rural areas in selected federal states to illustrate the increasing role of interlocked federalism. The interplay between the political levels took an unexpectedly flexible, and between the various states heterogeneous, form. All in all, however, the...

El beneficio de los caminos rurales: ampliando oportunidades de ingreso para los pobres AgEcon
Escobal D'Angelo, Javier; Ponce, Carmen.
