A MEZŐGAZDASÁGI JÖVEDELMEK STABILITÁSA AgEcon
Lamfalusi, Ibolya.

A NEW STRUCTURE FOR AGRICULTURE: A REVOLUTION FOR RURAL AMERICA AgEcon
Drabenstott, Mark.
U.S. agriculture is undergoing a tidal wave of change in its structure. A shift to supply chains and away from commodities and commodity markets is the hallmark of this new wave. The new agriculture of the 21st century will bring with it a new geography that may be nothing short of a revolution for rural America. Supply chains will tend to concentrate activity geographically and change the local economic dynamic where they do locate. Finally, the tide of change in agriculture's structure means a whole new slate of policy issues. Concentration, market access, and the delivery mechanism for government support all become bigger concerns with supply chains. But perhaps the biggest policy challenge looming ahead is addressing rural America's economic...

Birtokkoncentráció, foglalkoztatás, diverzifikáció és multifunkcionalitás AgEcon
Feher, Alajos; Czimbalmos, Robert; Kovacs, Gyorgyi; Szepesy, Edit.

ESDA-GIS Analysis of Spatial-temporal Disparity in Rural Economic Development of Guangxi AgEcon
Liao, Wei-hua.
On the basis of spatial-temporal perspective, by using the data of farmers’ net income per capita from 1996 to 2007 in counties of Guangxi coupled with the global and local spatial auto-correlation analysis of ESDA and GIS technology, we conduct the empirical research on the rural economic developmental disparity of counties in Guangxi and the evolving characteristics of local spatial heterogeneity. The results show that the rural economic developmental disparity of counties in Guangxi from 1996 to 2007 varies infinitesimally on the whole, and the regions with similar rural economic developmental level have spatial concentrated distribution. Based on these, the local MORAN’S I scatter diagram and LISA concentration diagram are drawn. In comparison with the...

Torres-Navarrete,Rumania Alexandra; Vargas-Burgos,Julio Cesar; García-Quintana,Yudel; Torres-Navarrete,Emma Danielly; Arteaga-Crespo,Yasiel.
Abstract Naranjilla (Solanum quitoense Lam.), is an economic input of vital importance for the Ecuadorian Amazon due to multiple benefits that offers, although it requires studies that provide a basis for the naranjilla cultivation management. The aim of this research was to determine the influence of socioeconomic variables on the naranjilla production from the rural community of Wamani, Napo province in the Ecuadorian Amazon. For the study, a group-type questionnaire was conducted to 40 rural producers of naranjilla in the region, which was structured based on three levels, which included data on the property, crop management and socio-economic aspects. Additionally, a factor analysis was applied to reduce the variables dimensionality. The results showed...

Motivation and intentions of farmers as regards the development of multifunctional agriculture in microregions of Northern and Eastern Hungary AgEcon
Feher, Alajos; Czimbalmos, Robert; Kovacs, Gyorgyi; Szepesy, Edit.
There are an increasing number of references in the literature on the significance of the role of farm households and farm families in the development of multifunctional agriculture. The motivation and intentions of 104 farmers in three LEADER micro-regions in Northern and Eastern Hungary with respect to the present and future structures of their farms (including the expansion of non-agricultural activities and functions) were investigated using questionnaires and narrative interviews. Almost two-thirds of the respondents spoke of the existence of non-agricultural activities and functions, but few of these were market-driven. The farmers ranked the steps that should be taken to increase multifunctionality in their own micro-regions in order of importance...

Nonmetropolitan Outmigration Counties: Some Are Poor, Many Are Prosperous AgEcon
McGranahan, David A.; Cromartie, John; Wojan, Timothy R..
Population loss through net outmigration is endemic to many rural areas. Over a third of nonmetro counties lost at least 10 percent of their population through net outmigration over 1988-2008. Some of these counties have had very high poverty rates, substantial loss in manufacturing jobs, and high unemployment. Lack of economic opportunity was likely a major factor in their high outmigration. Most high net outmigration counties, however, are relatively prosperous, with low unemployment rates, low high school dropout rates, and average household incomes. For these counties, low population density and less appealing landscapes distinguish them from other nonmetro counties. Both types of outmigration counties stand out on two measures, indicating that...

Policies drain the North China Plain: Agricultural policy and groundwater depletion in Luancheng County, 1949-2000 AgEcon
Kendy, Eloise; Molden, David J.; Steenhuis, Tammo S.; Liu, Changming; Wang, Jinxia.
The report examines the relationships between agricultural policies in the North China Plain, the approaches to water management that evolved from them, the quantity of water that was actually used, and the consequent groundwater depletion beneath Luancheng County, Hebei Province, from 1949 to 2000. To systematically address these relationships, we use a comprehensive water-balance approach. Our results indicate that a single, longstanding policy-that of using groundwater to meet the crop-water requirements not supplied by precipitation-is responsible for the steady rate of groundwater decline.

Rural America At A Glance, 2009 Edition AgEcon
Kusmin, Lorin D..
Update of an annual series, the 2009 edition of Rural America At A Glance deals with effects of the major recession on rural America. Initially, effects of the recession were mitigated in nonmetro areas by high commodity prices throughout much of 2008, but as the recession deepened, prices fell. Both nonmetro and metro areas experienced rising unemployment as manufacturing and other major employment sectors contracted, and they were similarly affected by the mortgage foreclosure crisis. However, even before the current recession, nonmetro poverty rates had risen in the growth years after the 2001 recession, against the usual trend during a time of economic expansion; the nonmetro poverty rate has exceeded the national poverty rate since 2001. The nonmetro...
