A falusi turizmus helyzete és ökonómiai értékelése zempléni településekben AgEcon
Szabo, Bernadett.
A térség jelentős turisztikai potenciált rejt magában, melynek hasznosítása azonban szerény.

Agritourism flows to Italy: an analysis of determinants using the gravity model approach AgEcon
Santeramo, Fabio G.; Seccia, Antonio; De Blasi, Giuseppe; Carlucci, Domenico.
Tourism represents one of the most important income sources for Italy. In recent years, apart from “traditional” destinations, tourism supply is widely changing in order to satisfy the customers “love for variety” and valorise marginal resources, then new formulas are emerging (e.g. agritourism). This work aims to elaborate and estimate an econometric model able to adequately explain the size of agritourists flows to Italy from main partner countries using the gravity model approach that has been broadly applied to the analysis of international flows. In this work, the “basic” model has been enlarged and improved with the introduction of other explicative variables. The results has allowed to confirm empirical validity of the gravity model in studying...

Assessing Environment in Agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): A Time Series Estimation AgEcon
Koffi-Tessio, Egnonto M.; Homevor, Kpotogbe.
Within a context of global trade liberalisation and constrained national budgets, agriculture in many countries has proved incapable of sustaining household livelihoods an d socio-economic development in rural areas. The post-war industrial success of several Asian countries has suggested various alternatives for rural development, including tourism for domestic and possibly foreign visitors. After outlining the economic characteristics of rural tourism and its policies, this paper reviews the evolution of government policies in this area in East Asia, including the establishment of "tourist farms" and "pilot scheme" villages in Korea since the 1980s. A field survey of some 200 Korean village leaders and others, undertaken in 2004, is reported as to the...

Classification of Agri-Tourism / Rural Tourism SMEs in Poland (on the Example of the Wielkopolska Region) AgEcon
Przezborska, Lucyna.
The paper is based on data from a questionnaire survey (interviews) conducted in the western part of Poland on 183 rural tourism and agri-tourism small and medium enterprises. The classification of enterprises was based on the methodology proposed by Wysocki (1996) and included the k-means clustering algorithm. As the result of the research three types of SMEs were separated, including the top resilient enterprises aimed mainly at tourism activity and usually connected with horse recreation, a cluster of mixed SMEs for which tourism activity was an additional and less important source of income, and a group of SMEs for which tourism activity was an additional but important source of income. The classification may be used as a hint for rural development...

Comunicação para o Turismo no Espaço Rural AgEcon
Mariani, Milton Pasquoto; Gehlen, Marco Antonio.

Stojanovic, Zaklina; Manic, Emilija.
The concept of Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development (SARD) is based on resources effective usage that brings strengthen social cohesion of rural regions. Sustainable agro systems take care of natural resources conservation, as well as of economic and social aspects of rural economy. In order to advance complementary activities, agricultural sector has been often seen as the base for local economical diversification of capacities. The connections between agriculture, nature and tourism are especially important. The EU countries insist on this kind of connections which is the integral part of financial support of common funds, while the candidate countries are using the IPA assistance for rural development programs. Development of small business in the sphere of rural tourism by the example of the Kirov region AgEcon
Vlasyuk, Tatyana.
The small-scale business is an important element of the market economy, which influences rates of economic growth, structure and quality of the gross domestic product. Nevertheless poor agricultural commodity prices, rising input costs combined with low productivity and out-of-day agricultural machinery erode small farming enterprises and result in social and economic problems. On the other hand small farming enterprises can play a significant role in the developing and designing new policy modes for rural areas. In this situation rural tourism can provide new ways to diversify farm products and supplement agricultural incomes for existing agro industrial and farming enterprise. It can also provide new jobs for those not involved in the agricultural...

DIFFERENTIATION AND SYNERGIES IN RURAL TOURISM: EVIDENCE FROM ISRAEL AgEcon
Tchetchik, Anat; Fleischer, Aliza; Finkelshtain, Israel.
This paper applies a discrete-choice framework with product differentiation to model the rural tourism industry in Israel and to jointly estimate the effect of lodging and farm characteristics on consumer preferences and firms' costs. The model accounts for heterogeneity in tastes and technologies and allows for unobservable product characteristics. We find evidence for technological synergy in joint production of farming and rural hospitality, but none in the demand. The differentiation in the industry is vast and is the major contributor to the price-cost margin, which averages 62%. An additional minor cause are government regulations, which restrict supply. Simulation results demonstrate the growth potential of the industry and show that the government...

Evaluating Household Leisure Behaviour of Rural Tourism in Japan AgEcon
Ohe, Yasuo.
Understanding the demand profile of rural tourism is a necessary condition for the successful diversification of any rural economy. Although descriptive analyses have been conducted on this issue, a more generalised framework is required that allows us to explore economic analyses. This paper evaluates the leisure behaviour of households that have a preference for rural tourism in Japan. First, we give conceptual consideration to the notion that leisure behaviour should be regarded as a form of a home production and explain that households that undertake rural tourism have undergone an upward shift in the home production function to realise a higher utility level. We propose that a preference for rural recreation causes this shift by improving the...

EVALUATING LINKAGE BETWEEN OPERATORS’ SATISFACTION AND POTENTIAL OF LOCAL RESOURCES FOR RURAL TOURISM: EVIDENCE FROM MATSUURA IN JAPAN AgEcon
Ohe, Yasuo; Kurihara, Shinichi; Shimoura, Shinpei.
As rural tourism evolves into diversification, the connection between the individual and local resource management is becoming an important issue for the sustainable evolution of rural tourism. To explore this point, we investigated conceptually and empirically whether rural tourism operators’ individual satisfaction enhances utilization of local resources and, if so, what mechanism works for it by focusing on rural tourism accompanied by an educational program, i.e. a farm-stay with farm and rural experience services implemented as a part of school trips in Matsuura, Japan. From statistical tests and an econometric estimation based on a questionnaire survey of rural tourism operators we found that operators’ individual satisfaction gained from interchange...

This paper evaluated diversified rural tourism activities from the perspectives of economic viability and endogenous utilization of rural resources and investigated labour productivity. First, we presented a conceptual framework on how to evaluate economic viability and the endogenous mobilization of rural resources. Second, we empirically evaluated economic viability, the supply shift effect of endogenous utilization of rural resources and labour productivity with regard to rural tourism. The main findings are as follows. First, examination of the three main activities, i.e. accommodation, restaurant operation and direct selling of farm products, showed that both full-time and part-time labour input contribute more effectively to better sales than such...

O TURISMO RURAL E AS ORGANIZAÇÕES SOCIAIS LOCAIS NO DISTRITO DE SÃO PEDRO, BENTO GONÇALVES – RS AgEcon
Silva, Maurem Fronza da; Almeida, Joaquim Anecio; Souza, Marcelino de.
Conceived as an income generation alternative for rural inhabitants, tourism has an admitted economic genesis. However, the motivation of each family gradually neighbors the community as the activity outflows the boundaries of the property. The associative forms are an attempt to equalize diverging interests and to attempt to work for the collective welfare. In the district of São Pedro, Bento Gonçalves – RS, previous experiences of union among families work as a basis for the “Caminhos de Pedra” (Stone Paths) association, which is meant to be an entity that prepares the farmers for their new role as tourism entrepreneurs.

The contemporary rural space needs to be considered in all its diversity. The non-agricultural activities, particularly those that involve leisure and tourism, have become increasingly important and may contribute to the local economy dynamics. The aim in this work was to identify the effects of tourism on income and job generation in the rural space. The basis of the qualitative research was a case study in São Martinho, a city in Santa Catarina state. Semi-structured interviews were done with the ten people responsible for the tourism enterprises in the district’s rural area. It was noticed that the resources originating from tourism were responsible for most of the entrepreneurs’ family revenue, contributing to an improvement in their lifestyle. There...
