Footprint issues in scintillometry over heterogeneous landscapes Inra

Scintillometry is widely recognized as a potential tool for obtaining spatially aggregated sensible heat fluxes. Although many investigations have been made over contrasting component surfaces, few aggregation schemes consider footprint contributions. In this paper an approach is 5 presented to infer average sensible heat flux over a very heterogeneous landscape by using a large aperture scintillometer. The methodology isdemonstrated on simulated data and tested on a time series of measurements obtained during the SPARC2004 experiment in Barrax, Spain. Results show that the two-dimensional footprint approach yields more accurate results of aggregated sensible heat flux than traditional methods

The CAPITOUL (Canopy and Aerosol ParticlesInteraction in TOulouse Urban Layer) field observation program takes place over the city of Toulouse, France, from February 2004 to March 2005. There are five primary objectives: (i) to study the response of the urban surface and atmosphere to a wide range of atmospheric conditions with a focus on the urban surface energy balance (SEB) (ii) to quantify the response of the boundary layer to the characteristics of the urbansurface, e.g., urban breezes, urban (thermodynamical) plumes, urban fog formation and dissipation, and to continuously observe trends in the urban heat island (UHI).
