The European flat oyster, an endemic species from European coasts, has been classified in the category of "endangered and/or declining species" since 2003. Indeed, the natural beds of this oyster, consumed since ancient times, have gradually been decimated by over-exploitation and by successive emergence of parasitic diseases. The parasite that causes the disease called bonamiosis has contributed to drastically reduce the French and European aquacultural production of flat oyster. Infection of cucumber with yellowing viruses or powdery mildew has high economic impact in horticulture. The Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus (CYSDV) is the major agent of yellowing disease. Genebank accessions resistant to CYSDV have thus far not been identified. Powdery mildew (PM) symptoms are caused by Podosphaera xanthii and Golovinomyces cichoracearum. In contrast to CYSDV, various PM resistant cucumber accessions and multiple genetic loci conferring resistance are known. Preferably, control of CYSDV and of powdery mildew is achieved by resistant cultivars. Resistance to CYSDV was identified in PI 250147, and three quantitative trait loci (QTL) were mapped. Current genomic resources in melon and other cucurbits National Institute of Agronomic Research

In recent years there has been an effort towards the development of genomic resources in several cucurbit species, mainly in melon, cucumber and watermelon. The number of available sequences for these species in public databases has increased recently. This has allowed the design of microarrays for transcriptome analysis and the discovery of SNP markers for genotyping. Other genomic tools are also available in melon as BAC libraries, mutant populations and saturated genetic maps. Some international initiatives have emerged that will probably lead to the sequencing of the complete genomes of some cucurbit species during the next years.

Genome association analyses have been successful in identifying quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for pig body weights measured at a single age. However, when considering the whole weight trajectories over time in the context of genome association analyses, it is important to look at the markers that affect growth curve parameters. The easiest way to consider them is via the two-step method, in which the growth curve parameters and marker effects are estimated separately, thereby resulting in a reduction of the statistical power and the precision of estimates. One efficient solution is to adopt nonlinear mixed models (NMM), which enables a joint modeling of the individual growth curves and marker effects. Identification of a CAPS marker in an eIF4E gene linked to Zucchini yellow mosaic virus resistance in watermelon National Institute of Agronomic Research

Genes that encode eukaryotic initiation factors (eIF) 4E and iso(4E) have been associated with the recessively inherited resistance to potyviruses in a number of plant species. Using previously developed degenerate primers, partial eIF4E and eIF(iso)4E gene sequence regions were obtained through polymerase chain reaction of the genomic DNA templates prepared from the Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV)-resistant U.S. Plant Introduction (PI) 595203, and the ZYMV-susceptible ‘New Hampshire Midget’ (NHM).
