A comparison of coincidental time series of the ocean surface height by satellite altimeter, mooring, and inverted echo sounder IRD

Altimetric measurements of sea surface height at two locations in the western tropical Pacific Ocean are compared to estimates of the dynamic sea surface height computed from cotemporal surface-to-bottom temperature/salinity measurements on moorings and acoustic travel time measured by bottom-moored inverted echo sounders. The results show statistically high correlation between the in situ measurements at periods greater than 5 days and between the altimeter and in situ measurements at periods greater than 20 days. The rms difference between any two modes of observation is consistently between 2 and 3 cm. (Résumé d'auteur)

Analysis of vessel influence on spatial behaviour of fish schools using a multi-beam sonar and consequences for biomass estimates by echo-sounder IRD

Biases in the measurements of spatial distribution of fish schools and their consequences for school biomass estimates during conventional acoustic surveys are mainly due to vertical and lateral avoidance of the vessel. In this paper, we quantify school avoidance during an acoustic survey carried out from 10 to 29 May 1994 in the Catalan Sea. From a lateral multi-beam sonar the geometric characteristics (depth, length, width, height, surface, and volume) of 1268 schools were obtained. The 60 beams (1.5° X 15°) of the sonar scanned a vertical plane from 0° to 90°, perpendicular to the vessel path within a range of 100 m. Diel variability of school structure with special reference to transition periods IRD

Pelagic fishes generally dispers at dusk and aggregate in schools at dawn. The dynamics (duration, variation in school number, and characteristics) of these two behavioural processes have been studied during a 26 h survey in a small area of high fish abundance in the Catalan Sea (Spain). The dynamics of aggregation and dispersion were investigated using a dual-beam vertical echo-sounder (BioSonics) connected to a special school integrator software package (INES-MOVIES-B) which estimates school parameters in terms of size, geometry, and density. Exploitation des données sonar, type omnidirectionnel (type SR240) IRD

Le SR240 est un sonar multifaisceaux de longue portée, son utilisation au niveau du traitement des données passe par divers calculs et méthodes qui lui sont spécifiques. La méthode de dépouillement des données n'est pas répétée (cf. rapport précédent), seuls les principaux calculs et méthodes à connaître sont résumés ici (correction de la taille des bancs, erreurs systématiques de taille, réglages, densité, indice de compaction, les biais...). Des résolutions sont à prendre pour les prochaines campagnes VARGET (IRD, ISRA, FLASA) au niveau des réglages acoustiques. Test de la fonction TVG, en 30 log R, validité du paramètres "along beam dimension" : taille des bancs. Des méthodes sont proposés afin de diminuer voir contrôler les différents biais apportés...

From oblique subduction to intra-continental transpression : structures of the southern Kermadec-Hikurangi margin from multibeam bathymetry, side-scan sonar and seismic reflection IRD

The southern Kermadec-Hikurangi convergent margin, east of New Zealand, accommodates the oblique subduction of the oceanic Hikurangi Plateau at rates of 4-5 cm/yr. Swath bathymetry and sidescan data, together with seismic reflection and geopotential data obtained during the GEODYNZ-SUD cruise, showed major changes in tectonic style along the margin. The changes reflect the size and abundance of seamounts on the subducting plateau, the presence and thickness of trench-fill turbidites, and the change to increasing obliquity and intracontinental transpression towards the south. Gregariousness and school behaviour of pelagic fish : impact of the acoustics evaluation and fisheries IRD

Pelagic fish (Clupeids, Carangids, Engraulids, Scombroids, etc.) are normally forming dense schools, gathering over tens of thousands of individuals. This paper defines the concept of fish schools for fishery acoustics, and describes briefly their main dynamic mechanisms. The kind of spatial distribution, due to this behaviour, makes the design of appropriate sampling methodologies necessary. The effect of the heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of fish density is discussed. Manual of acoustics theory and application to the biosonics-system for target strength measurement IRD

At the end of 1996, a training course in acoustics was performed. Acoustics, as an important tool in fishery assessment, is destined to be continued by Indonesian scientists, after the closure of the PELFISH Project. This project, sponsored by the European Union, Indonesia, and France took place from 1991 to 1995, and twenty acoustic cruises in the Java Sea and the surrounding areas were achieved. To fulfill the aim of the PELFISH Project, besides the electronic equipment, this training was therefore indispensable to use it. This paper recalls the basics of acoustics, all about the scientific apparatus and their adjustments, the procedures of data acquisition and their post processing. (Résumé d'auteur)
