The female sex pheromone of the fungus-growing termitePseudacanthotermes spiniger (Termitidae, Macrotermitinae) was isolated from sternal glands of alates. The compound inducing attraction and excitation in males was identified as the (3Z,6Z,8E)-3,6,8-dodecatrien-1-ol by GC-MS, microhydrogenation, GC-FTIR, and NMR. This unsaturated alcohol is present in both sexes but in much higher quantities in females than in males (about 10 times). The hypothesis is suggested that this alcohol, which is detected at extremely low concentrations by the workers ofP. spiniger, may be used either as a trail-following pheromone or a sex pheromone according to concentrations and to target castes. Ecdysteroids are polyhyclroxylated steroids that function as molting hormones in insects. 20-Hydroxyecdysone (a 27C-ecdysteroid) is classically considered as the major steroid hormone of Drosophila melanogaster, but this insect also contains 28C-ecdysteroids. This arises from both the use of several dietary sterols as precursors for the synthesis of its steroid hormones, and its inability to dealkylate the 28C-phytosterols to produce cholesterol. Les constituants élémentaires présents dans la sécrétion phéromonale émise par les femelles vierges de Cacoecimorpha pronubana ont été identifiés par chromatographie en phase gazeuse, spectrométrie de masse et microchimie. Il s’agit de 6 composés dont 3 seulement jouent clairement un rôle dans le comportement sexuel du mâle : les acétoxy-1 tétradécène- 11Z et 11E (Z-11 et E-11 TDA) et le tétradécène-11Z ol-1 (Z-11 TDol). Des capsules chargées de 1 000 μg d’un mélange : Z-11/E-11 TDA (97/3) : 90 p. 100 ; Z-11 TDol : 10 p. 100 permettent de suivre l’évolution du vol de cette tordeuse dans les cultures florales du Sud-Est de la France. Exocytosis and protein secretion in Trypanosoma Inra

Background: Human African trypanosomiasis is a lethal disease caused by the extracellular parasite Trypanosoma brucei. The proteins secreted by T. brucei inhibit the maturation of dendritic cells and their ability to induce lymphocytic allogenic responses. To better understand the pathogenic process, we combined different approaches to characterize these secreted proteins.Results: Overall, 444 proteins were identified using mass spectrometry, the largest parasite secretome described to date. Functional analysis of these proteins revealed a strong bias toward folding and degradation processes and to a lesser extent toward nucleotide metabolism. The European grapevine moth (EGVM), Lobesia botrana, is a major pest of grapes in Europe. Females are attracted to a nonhost plant: tansy (Tanacetum vulgare L.), which is a common weed in Slovakian vineyards. A steam distillate extract of tansy flowers was analyzed by means of a GC-EAG technique to screen constituents detected by the olfactory receptors of EGVM females. Background: Terpenoids are among the most important constituents of grape flavour and wine bouquet, and serve as useful metabolite markers in viticulture and enology. Based on the initial 8-fold sequencing of a nearly homozygous Pinot noir inbred line, 89 putative terpenoid synthase genes (VvTPS) were predicted by in silico analysis of the grapevine (Vitis vinifera) genome assembly [1]. Identification of floral volatiles involved in recognition of oilseed rape flowers, Brassica napus by honeybees, Apis mellifera Inra

Volatiles from oilseed rape, Brassica napus, flowers were sampled by air entrainment and their relevance to the natural odor profile of the flowers was confirmed by conditioned proboscis extension (CPE) assays with honeybee, Apis mellifera L., foragers. Coupled gas chromatography (GC)-CPE analysis of the air entrainment samples was used to locate key compounds involved in the recognition of B. napus flowers, and the compounds were then identified using coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and comparison with authentic samples. Identification of the sex Pheromone of Sesamia cretica Lederer Inra

By using solid phase micro-extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses, a sex pheromone blend for the stem borer, Sesamia cretica Lederer (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), was identified as consisting of (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-ol (80%), (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-yl acetate (10%), and (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-ol (10%). The first two components had previously been discovered as attractants for S. cretica in field tests, but had not been identified in the female's sex pheromone gland. A field-trapping trial showed that the three-component blend gave the highest catches of male S. cretica.
