Background: The first high quality draft of the grape genome sequence has just been published. This is a critical step in accessing all the genes of this species and increases the chances of exploiting the natural genetic diversity through association genetics. However, our basic knowledge of the extent of allelic variation within the species is still not sufficient. Towards this goal, we constructed nested genetic core collections (G-cores) to capture the simple sequence repeat (SSR) diversity of the grape cultivated compartment (Vitis vinifera L. subsp. sativa) from the world's largest germplasm collection (Domaine de Vassal, INRA Herault, France), containing 2262 unique genotypes. The nutritional status of a plant is known to influence its susceptibility to pathogens. In the case of Botrytis cinerea the role of nitrogen fertilization of various host plants on disease development appears to be variable. This study was carried out to characterize possible variability associated with strains and inoculum density of B. cinerea in its ability to infect leaf-pruning wounds and to develop stem lesions on tomato plants as affected by the nitrogen input. Six strains differing in their aggressiveness to tomato were compared. They all had similar reaction patterns in vitro in response to differential nitrogen levels. Our knowledge of the composition of the waxes on the surfaces of Eucalyptus leaves is growing but that of plant primary metabolites has been completely overlooked. The diffusion of primary metabolites above the cuticle exposes them to a variety of herbivorous taxa and has the potential to influence their responses to that plant. Juvenile leaves of two families of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. ssp. globulus and two families of E. nitens (Deane & Maiden) Maiden had 11 out of 16 of the epicuticular waxes that were detected in common. The susceptibility of honey bees of different ages to infestation by Acarapis woodi (Rennie) National Institute of Agronomic Research

The vestibular guard hairs, the spiracular mechanism, and the second legs of old bees are unimportant in preventing Acarapis woodi (Rennie) from entering the anterior thoracic trachae. Old bees seem less attractive than young ones to A. woodi, but not more resistant to mites trying to infest them.
