A review of methods for discrimination of honey bee populations as applied to European beekeeping Inra

Here, scientists from 19 European countries, most of them collaborating in Working Group 4: “Diversity and Vitality” of COST Action FA 0803“Prevention of honey bee COlony LOSSes” (COLOSS), review the methodology applied in each country for discriminating between honey beepopulations. Morphometric analyses (classical and geometric) and different molecular markers have been applied. Even if the approach hasbeen similar, however, different methodologies regarding measurements, landmarks or molecular markers may have been used, as well asdifferent statistical procedures. There is therefore the necessity to establish common methods in all countries in order to have results that canbe directly compared. This is one of the goals of WG4 of the COLOSS project

Description of a new Tetranychus (Acarina, Prostigmata: Tetranychidae) pest of Musa from French Guiana Inra

A new species of tetranychid mite, genus Tetranychus Dufour, 1832, is described and illustrated herein from neotropical area. Tetranychus musae sp. nov. (Acari, Prostigrnata: Tetranychidae) differs from other species in the genus by the combination between the arrangement of leg setae on females tarsus 1 and the shape of the aedeagus. Tarsus I beurs one tactile setae proximal ta proximal duplex setae and three tactiles in line or almost in Jine with proximal duplex setae. The aedeagus knob consists of an acute posterior projection bent ventrally and a larger anterior rounded projection directed anterodorsally. 68 isolats d’armillaire (dont 50 diplontes et 18 séries d’haplontes d’origine monobasidiosporée) ont été déterminés par confrontation avec des testeurs haploïdes représentant les 5 espèces d’armillaires actuellement connues en Europe. Les résultats ont montré que les isolats appartenaient aux espèces D = Armillariella mellea s. str. (29 isolats), C = A. ostoyae (16) E = A. bulbosa (15) et B (5). Fusarium spp from potato: polymorphism of esterase phenotypes on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis Inra

L’électrophorèse sur gel de polyacrylamide est utilisée pour analyser 49 isolats monospores de Fusarium issus pour la plupart de pomme de terre en Bretagne. Ces isolats appartiennent à 3 espèces (F oxysporum, F solani et F roseum), et 5 variétés de F roseum (sambucinum, arthrosporioides, culmorum, graminearum, gibbosum). Les estérases du mycélium, seul critère enzymatique retenu, permettent de distinguer sans ambiguïté chaque espèce ou variété de Fusarium. Molecular phylogeny and systematic in the genus Brachycaudus (Homoptera: Aphididae): insights from a combined analysis of nuclear and mitochondrial genes Inra

Phylogenetic relationships among members of the Aphid genus Brachycaudus (Homoptera: Aphididae) were inferred from partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome B oxidase (CytB), two partial fragments of mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (COI) and the internal transcribed spacer II (ITS2) of ribosomal DNA. Twenty-nine species, with several specimens per species, were included, representing all the historically recognized species-groups and subgenera used in the genus except the monospecific subgenus Mordvilkomemor. Results indicate that the genus Brachycaudus is a well-supported monophyletic group. Multivariate analysis of the correlation between noctuidae subfamilies and the chemical structure of their sex pheromones and male attractants Inra

Female-emitted pheromones and sex attractants of Noctuidae were investigated using a specific computer procedure to analyze data collected from the literature. Correspondence analysis was used to survey the structure-activity relationships of sex pheromones in seven subfamilies. Structural, stereochemical, and functional features of active molecules were related to taxonomy. This multidimensional analysis revealed that the prevalent chemical frame of noctuid moth pheromones was a monounsaturated acetate withZ stereochemistry and a double bond on the fifth carbon closest to the nonfunctional branch of the molecule. Trichovirus, a new genus of plant viruses Inra

The genusTrichovirus embraces five viral species (two definitive and three tentative) with similar biological, morphological, physicochemical, and ultrastructural properties. Viral replication is likely to occur in the cytoplasm, where virions accumulate in more or less loose bundles or paracrystalline aggregates. The genome is a 3prime polyadenylated, positive-sense, single stranded RNA of 7.5–8.7 kb in size. In definitive species (apple chlorotic leaf spot and potato T viruses), the genome is constructed of three slightly overlapping open reading frames coding for replication-related proteins (ORF 1), a putative movement protein (ORF 2), and the coat protein (ORF 3), respectively. Les dénombrements chromosomiques de l’espèce océanienne Dioscorea transversa Brown cv. « Waël » ainsi que de 11 cultivars d’origines diverses de D. trifida L. mettent en évidence un nombre 2n = 80. D. pilosiuscula Bert. présente des difficultés particulières de dénombrement chromosomique qui ne nous permettent qu’une estimation du nombre 2n qui est d’environ 80 chromosomes. Un tableau récapitulatif, que nous avons souhaité exhaustif, des dénombrements publiés pour le genre Dioscorea (72 espèces dénombrées sur un total estimé à 620, soit environ 12 p. 100 de l’ensemble des espèces du genre) permet de préciser les modalités de son évolution chromosomique.
