Agronomic efficiency for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in bean cultivars. Repositório Alice
PACHECO, J. S.; RESENDE, C. L. P.; MENDES, R. C.; PEREIRA, H. S.; RODRIGUES, F..
The aim of this study was to identify and categorize new bean cultivars regarding their efficiency and responsiveness to nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, both individually and simultaneously, as well as to stipulate the cultivars that would suit each niche market based on this classification. Three experiments were conducted in the field separated by nutrients adopting the randomized block design in a factorial scheme (11 x 4) of 11 cultivars in four doses with three replications. Grain yield was the variable investigated and the means were the basis for the classification separated by in four availabilities: low, partial, adequate dose, and nutritional excess. Genetic variability was observed among the bean cultivars for efficiency and responsiveness...

Bacterial structure of agricultural soils with high and low yields. Repositório Alice
SANTOS, M. de S. dos; KAVAMURA, V. N.; REYNALDO, E. F.; SOUZA, D. T.; SILVA, E. H. F. M. da; MAY, A..
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the structure of bacterial communities at two agricultural fields in Brazil (Paraná (PR) and Bahia (BA) states) with a history of high and low productivity of soybean. 16S rRNA gene amplicons revealed that plots with low yield of grains showed greater bacterial richness than plots with high yield. The phylum Acidobacteria was more abundant in soil samples from PR site. The rhizosphere of plants presented a similar bacterial community for both high and low yield plots. Soil samples from BA showed differences in the diversity between the plots with high and low productivity. The use of 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing allowed the assessment of differences between plots with different soybean yields. This might be useful...

ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF AGRICULTURAL LAND-USE CHANGE: THE ROLE OF ECONOMICS AND POLICY AgEcon
Lubowski, Ruben N.; Bucholtz, Shawn; Claassen, Roger; Roberts, Michael J.; Cooper, Joseph C.; Gueorguieva, Anna; Johansson, Robert C..
This report examines evidence on the relationship between agricultural land-use changes, soil productivity, and indicators of environmental sensitivity. If cropland that shifts in and out of production is less productive and more environmentally sensitive than other cropland, policy-induced changes in land use could have production effects that are smaller-and environmental impacts that are greater-than anticipated. To illustrate this possibility, this report examines environmental outcomes stemming from landuse conversion caused by two agricultural programs that others have identified as potentially having important influences on land use and environmental quality: Federal crop insurance subsidies and the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), the Nation's...

Evaluation of Breakeven Farm-gate Switchgrass Prices in South Central North Dakota AgEcon
Bangsund, Dean A.; DeVuyst, Eric A.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
Switchgrass, a warm-season perennial grass, native to the region, has received considerable interest for its potential role as a dedicated feedstock for cellulosic-based bio-fuels. This research examined the farm-gate price needed for switchgrass to provide per-acre net returns equal to those obtained from traditional crops in south central North Dakota. Future production costs for switchgrass and net returns from traditional crops were estimated for three soil productivity classes and also were developed to reflect the historical revenue and cost patterns associated with producers who are typically more or less profitable (i.e., average net return per acre) than regional averages. Prices were calculated using an annualized equivalent analysis of...

Sustainability of Corn Stover Harvest for Biomass AgEcon
Sesmero, Juan P..
Off-farm demand for crop residues is expected to grow as bioenergy policies become effective. Demand for residues will provide farmers with an additional source of revenue but it may also trigger losses in soil organic carbon and increases in fertilizer application. This study develops a dynamic economic model of stover harvest that permits conceptualization and quantification of these potential tradeoffs. We parameterize our model based on publicly available studies of soil biophysical relationships in the Corn Belt. Under these parameter values and 2010 corn and fertilizer prices harvesting stover is not economically convenient at prices below $53 per dry ton of stover. Results suggest that the rate of stover harvest may be quite sensitive and negatively...
