Examining Factors Affecting Population Change in the Southern United States: An Ongoing Case Study AgEcon

Urban sprawl and rural rebound are major foci of recent regional economic studies. Using 1980 and 2000 Census data from 11 southern states, binary logit regressions of population changes in rural-and-metropolitan counties and Black Belt-and-non-Black Belt counties reveal education, poverty, employment, and age differences are related to population changes.

Integrated pest management trials were conducted in order to test pest management practices in Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla provinces during 2011-2013 wet seasons. The data on population of insect pests, natural enemies, percent damage of diseases, percent damage of animal pests, weed species with wet weight, grain yield per rai, input costs, price of paddy and net benefit were collected comparing to the farmers’ practice trials. The results showed that the integrated pest management trials having more natural enemies than the farmers’ practice trials. A three years set of experiment have been conducted during 2010-2012 to develop and test for rice yield improvement and production cost reduction in Southern part of Thailand. This experiment was conducted in rice research center in the first two years and in farmer field for the third year with Split Plot in RCB; rice varieties as main plots and rice seed rate or spacing as sub plots and 4 replications. Results in research center found that for broadcasting rice, Pathum Thani 1 and RD37 which were photoperiod insensitive varieties gave the highest yield when direct broadcasted with 20 kg/rai seed rate whereas photoperiod sensitive varieties such as Chiang Phatthalung and Sangyod Phatthalung showed the highest yield when soak seed broadcasted with 15...

Pattani Rice Research center is the main center of Rice Department for developing the rice seeds in 5 special provinces of the southern parts based on southern rice seed research project. The study that aimed to investigate areas and need of rice seeds of farmers found that 75 % of local rice seeds were needed by farmers. Two most desirable rice seeds delete in the southern parts that studied by Pattani Rice Research Center Were Seebukabntang Rice Seed (PTNC09001) and Hawm Kradang-Ngah Rice seed (PTNC09002-59). Purification and improvement of local non-glutinous rice is a sub-project under the Rainfed Lowland Rice Breeding in Southern Region aim s to improve local rice varieties with high yielding potential and specific good grain qualities for niche markets. The experiment s were conducted by using randomized complete block design with four replications. Inter-station yield trials were located in Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani and Krabi rice research centers during 2010-2012. Regional yield trials were experimented in Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkla during 2011-2012 wet season.
