A Comparative Analysis of the Development of the United States and European Union Biodiesel Industries AgEcon
Carriquiry, Miguel A..
Worldwide production of biodiesel is growing at a rapid pace. Arguably, the European Union (EU) is the global leader in biodiesel production, but the United States has recently expanded its production. The growth of the biodiesel industry in both regions has been fueled by a series of government-provided financial incentives. However, the timing of the growth and incentive provisions, the nature of the main incentives, and the market conditions differ across regions. This article provides a comparative analysis of the EU and U.S. biodiesel industries, highlighting market and policy aspects that are leading to a rapid but distinct growth.

A Reexamination of the U.S. Export Demand for Soybeans and Soybean Products AgEcon
Uri, Noel D.; Hyberg, Bengt.
This paper addresses the question of whether the export demand for soybeans and soybean products changed structurally over the 1950 to 1992 period as the U.S. agricultural sector became more integrated with the rest of the world economy. The results suggest that export demands were stable for soybeans, soybean meal and soybean oil over the sample period. Moreover, it is possible to infer conclusively that the long-run soybean and soybean product export price elasticities were in the elastic range. The implications include that for each one percent reduction in the price of soybeans, soybean meal and/or soybean oil brought about through a government program, exports increased by more than one percent, leading to a reduction in the variability of soybean and...

Actual Media Reports on GM Foods and Chinese Consumers' Willingness to Pay for GM Soybean Oil AgEcon
Hu, Wuyang; Zhong, Funing; Ding, Yulian.
Information has been proven to have significant impacts on consumers' behavior and willingness to pay (WTP). In this study, information on GM soybean oil is given in the form of real-life cases involving GM food. These cases recorded from actual media reports. Using a hybrid of the double-bounded and payment care elicitation approaches, Chinese consumers' WTP for soybean oil is examined both before and after these cases are presented to them. Results indicate that media reports on positive cases do not increase consumers' WTP significantly, while reports on negative cases drastically lower their WTP.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this paper is to report the epidemiological, clinical, and pathological aspects of a case of rumenitis due to the ingestion of soybean oil in a bovine. The ox had access to barrels that stored soybean oil and ingested an indeterminate amount of the product. After consuming it, the animal presented hiporexia; liquid, brownish, and greasy feces; severe dehydration (12%); apathy; sternal recumbency; and death with a clinical evolution of 4 days. At necropsy, the rumen was filled with voluminous food and moderate amount of white-gray liquid with a greasy appearance. Upon microscopic examination, hydropic degeneration of the epithelium and areas of mucosal necrosis were observed in the rumen and reticulum. From these findings, we...

Antioxidant activity of rosemary and oregano ethanol extracts in soybean oil under thermal oxidation Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
ALMEIDA-DORIA,R.F.; REGITANO-D'ARCE,Marisa A.B..
Four experiments were conducted to measure the antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts of rosemary and oregano compared with synthetic antioxidants such as TBHQ and BHA/BHT. The antioxidant activity was determined and results differed from those of the Oven test at 63º C. Peroxide values and absorptivities at 232 nm of soybean oil under Oven test were lower in treatments with 25, 50, 75, 100 and 200 mg.Kg-1 TBHQ than in treatments with 1000 mg.Kg-1 oregano extract (O), 500 mg.Kg-1 rosemary extract (R) and their mixture R+O. All the treatments were effective in controlling the thermal oxidation of oils; the natural extracts were as effective as BHA+BHT and less effective than TBHQ. The natural extracts were mixed with 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg.Kg-1 TBHQ and...

Biosurfactants production by yeasts using soybean oil and glycerol as low cost substrate BJM
Accorsini,Fábio Raphael; Mutton,Márcia Justino Rossini; Lemos,Eliana Gertrudes Macedo; Benincasa,Maria.
Biosurfactants are bioactive agents that can be produced by many different microorganisms. Among those, special attention is given to yeasts, since they can produce many types of biosurfactants in large scale, using several kinds of substrates, justifying its use for industrial production of those products. For this production to be economically viable, the use of residual carbon sources is recommended. The present study isolated yeasts from soil contaminated with petroleum oil hydrocarbons and assessed their capacity for producing biosurfactants in low cost substrates. From a microbial consortium enriched, seven yeasts were isolated, all showing potential for producing biosurfactants in soybean oil. The isolate LBPF 3, characterized as Candida antarctica,...
