An analysis of milk quota abolition impact on Scottish farmers’ behaviour AgEcon
Toma, Luiza; Barnes, Andrew Peter; Renwick, Alan W..
This paper analyses factors influencing Scottish dairy farmers’ intentions to change size of business in response to milk quota abolition. The analysis uses structural equation modelling and is based on survey data collected in 2009 through telephone interviews with 533 farmers. Results suggest that farmers who (1) intend to leave their farm to children; (2) have not inherited their farm from previous generation; (3) perceive a lower impact of milk quota abolition on business; (4) have less negative attitudes towards policies/regulations; and (5) perceived a lower influence of policies/markets on business during the past decade are most likely to increase farm size.

Influence of Product Perception and Quality Label Valuation on Consumer Decision. The Case of Beef in Italy and Spain AgEcon
Barrena Figueroa, Ramo; Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes; Rosa, Franco.
The consumer perception of the relation between food and health is increased his importance. This situation generates business opportunities, when his effect is positive (for example "functional food"), or limitations or reductions in the markets (for example "food with risk perception"). This paper trait to present the relation between consumer perception of 1) intrinsic and extrinsic product attributes and 2) the influenced aspects on the label valuation on the product confidence and consumption reduction, in one market with risk perception (beef). The data has been obtained in two European Regions: Friuli-Venezia-Giulia in Italy and Navarra in Spain, differentiated in commercial aspects related fundamentally with the product differentiation. The...

Investigation of the factors influencing adoption of GM crops at country level AgEcon
Hall, Clare; Toma, Luiza; Moran, Dominic.
With the possible exception of nuclear technology, few scientific breakthroughs have generated the level of emotive debate that has surrounded the roll-out of agricultural biotechnology. Initial discussion about the environmental impacts of agricultural genetic modification, are now frequently juxtaposed with counter-claims that the technologies could actually be part of a wider global environmental solution in relation to climate change mitigation and food shortages. This study tests whether there are any consistent messages on why some countries seem to be advancing adoption of the technology, while others are not. We consider the range of claims in existing literature on adoption tendencies and then use structural equation modelling to test and estimate...

Long-term Financing in European Agribusiness Cooperatives: Emerging Methods for Ameliorating Investment Constraints AgEcon
Iliopoulos, Constantine.
During recent years, dramatic changes in the world food system have led to unprecedented competition between agribusiness firms. To compete in this environment, agricultural cooperatives should invest substantially in long-term activities such as R&D and advertisement. Co-operatives have a difficult problem in acquiring equity capital because the residual claimant (benefactor) is the patron of the firm, not the investor. This organizational design poses to cooperatives three investment constraints: a) the free rider problem, b) the horizon problem, and c) the portfolio problem. Empirical analysis utilizing a latent variable structural equation model and a large dual response survey suggests that in the U.S. member-patrons are more likely to invest in...
