Influence of Conservation Tillage and Soil Water Content on Crop Yield in Dryland Compacted Alfisol of Central Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Martinez G,Ingrid; Ovalle,Carlos; Del Pozo,Alejandro; Uribe,Hamil; Valderrama V,Natalia; Prat,Christian; Sandoval,Marco; Fernández,Fernando; Zagal,Erick.
Chilean dryland areas of the Mediterranean climate region are characterized by highly degraded and compacted soils, which require the use of conservation tillage systems to mitigate water erosion as well as to improve soil water storage. An oat (Avena sativa L. cv. Supernova-INIA) - wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Pandora-INIA) crop rotation was established under the following conservation systems: no tillage (Nt), Nt + contour plowing (Nt+Cp), Nt + barrier hedge (Nt+Bh), and Nt + subsoiling (Nt+Sb), compared to conventional tillage (Ct) to evaluate their influence on soil water content (SWC) in the profile (10 to 110 cm depth), the soil compaction and their interaction with the crop yield. Experimental plots were established in 2007 and lasted 3 yr till...

SOIL PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES BEFORE AND AFTER MANAGEMENT UNDER SOWING FORWARD SPEED REA
Cortez,Jorge W.; Armando,Egas J.; Motomiya,Anamari Viegas de A.; Rodrigues,Sonia A.; Gonçalves,Eduardo A..
ABSTRACT The soil management system affects physical attributes, and the forward sowing speed can increase or decrease its results. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate management systems before and after soil mobilisation and forward sowing speed on soil physical attributes. Thus, an experiment was conduct in a completely randomized block design with four replications and six soil management systems: no tillage (NT), medium harrowing (MH), subsoiling operation (S), subsoiling and medium harrowing operations (S+MH), cross-subsoiling and medium harrowing (S+MH), and ploughing and two medium harrowing (P+2MH), and four forward sowing speeds: 3.1, 5.1, 5.8, and 7.9 km h−1, applied in the subplots. Soil management affects soil penetration resistance (PR) values,...

Stalk and sucrose yield in response to nitrogen fertilization of sugarcane under reduced tillage PAB
Fortes,Caio; Trivelin,Paulo César Ocheuze; Vitti,André César; Otto,Rafael; Franco,Henrique Coutinho Junqueira; Faroni,Carlos Eduardo.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the agroindustrial production of sugarcane (millable stalks and sucrose yield) after successive nitrogen fertilizations of plant cane and ratoons in a reduced tillage system. The experiment was carried out at Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, on a Rhodic Eutrustox soil, during four consecutive crop cycles (March 2005 to July 2009). Plant cane treatments consisted of N-urea levels (control, 40, 80, and 120 kg ha-1 N + 120 kg ha-1 P2O5 and K2O in furrow application). In the first and second ratoons, the plant cane plots were subdivided in N-ammonium nitrate treatments (control, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha-1 N + 150 kg ha-1 K2O as top dressing over rows). In the third ratoon, N fertilization was leveled to 100 kg ha-1 in all...

The effect of plantation silviculture on soil organic matter and particle-size fractions in Amazonia Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Beldini,Troy Patrick; McNabb,Kenneth L; Lockaby,B. Graeme; Sanchez,Felipe G; Navegantes-Câncio,Osvaldo; Oliveira,Raimundo Cosme de.
Eucalyptus grandis and other clonal plantations cover about 3.5 million ha in Brazil. The impacts of intensively-managed short-rotation forestry on soil aggregate structure and Carbon (C) dynamics are largely undocumented in tropical ecosystems. Long-term sustainability of these systems is probably in part linked to maintenance of soil organic matter and good soil structure and aggregation, especially in areas with low-fertility soils. This study investigated soil aggregate dynamics on a clay soil and a sandy soil, each with a Eucalyptus plantation and an adjacent primary forest. Silvicultural management did not reduce total C stocks, and did not change soil bulk density. Aggregates of the managed soils did not decrease in mass as hypothesized, which...
