A Consumer-oriented Study of the South African Beef Value Chain AgEcon
Labuschagne, Anita; Louw, Andre; Ndanga, Leah Z.B..
The South African beef industry, like many other South African supply chains, is challenged by the increased complexity and demand brought about by globalization, increased volumes and competition, shortage of skilled staff and pressures to meet changing customer needs. The power has shifted from the supply side to the consumer. The consumer has been empowered by greater knowledge. Consumer needs are changing. A combination of these two facts implies that not only the retailer, but also the supply chain as a whole must make sure that it is aligned to deliver customer value, in order to ensure sustainable competitiveness and survival, manage risks and ensure acceptable returns. Competition today is based on competing supply chains. The focus of this study...

A MODEL OF INFORMATION AND I.T. ADOPTION IN FOOD SUPPLY CHAINS AgEcon
Mohtadi, Hamid; Kinsey, Jean D..
Evidence from the Food Supply chain suggests that food retailers often exhibit a reluctance to share information with their suppliers even when this benefits both parties. For example, inventory coordination and reduced costs may be realized by adopting appropriate supply chain management technologies such as cooperative planning, forecasting, and replenishment. This behavior is explained by viewing information as a strategic asset and modeling information exchange and the corresponding adoption of information technologies and analysis as a strategic game, i.e., an economic model where food retailers and their suppliers operate with uncertainty. The game is based on stylized facts from the food industry. Some key results from the game model are: (a) under...

A NEW STRUCTURE FOR AGRICULTURE: A REVOLUTION FOR RURAL AMERICA AgEcon
Drabenstott, Mark.
U.S. agriculture is undergoing a tidal wave of change in its structure. A shift to supply chains and away from commodities and commodity markets is the hallmark of this new wave. The new agriculture of the 21st century will bring with it a new geography that may be nothing short of a revolution for rural America. Supply chains will tend to concentrate activity geographically and change the local economic dynamic where they do locate. Finally, the tide of change in agriculture's structure means a whole new slate of policy issues. Concentration, market access, and the delivery mechanism for government support all become bigger concerns with supply chains. But perhaps the biggest policy challenge looming ahead is addressing rural America's economic...

Agri-food supply chains and sustainability-related issues: evidence from across the Scottish agri-food economy AgEcon
Leat, Philip M.K.; Lamprinopoulou-Kranis, Chrysa; Revoredo-Giha, Cesar; Kupiec-Teahan, Beata.
This paper examines the influence of agri-food supply chains on the sustainability-related activities and decisions of Scottish farmers, as well as the treatment of sustainability issues by food processors and retailers themselves. It is based on 8 whole chain case studies covering some of Scotland’s major agricultural products. The cases identify differing levels of understanding and activities related to sustainability, but widespread acknowledgement that sustainability involves the development of chains within which all parties can achieve acceptable profits. Indeed, collaborative supply chains, which seek improved economic performance, frequently assist environmental and social sustainability. The main drivers of sustainability are found to be the cost...

Can supply chain's coordination mechanisms include small holders? Insight from an empirical work in Costa Rica. AgEcon
Faure, Guy; D'Hotel, Elodie Maitre; le Coq, Jean-Francois; Saenz, Fernando.
Small holders' agriculture is currently facing new stakes due to State's withdrawal from agricultural support and to higher market requests for producing agricultural products. Different coordination mechanisms can be observed inside the supply chains involving farmers, farmers' organizations, and others stakeholders. They depend on the nature of the product, the characteristics of the stakeholders involved, the technical specifications related to the transactions, and the institutional environment. Relying on a comparative case study methodology, the paper analyzes the consequences of different coordination mechanisms on inclusion or exclusion of small farmers in the northern region of Costa Rica. Market coordination could be an efficient way to integrate...

Consumer driven supply chains: the case of Dutch organic tomato CIGR Journal
Anastasiadis, Foivos; van Dam, Ynte.
Supply chain management refers to the efficient integration of various processes involved in turning resources into consumer products.  Effectiveness of the supply chain is more easily understood in terms of Value Chain Management, and the integration of processes that turn resources into consumer value.  The current paper reports two studies into the value chain of organic produce in The Netherlands.  The paper combines two different research approaches to study which consumer motives and values are the main drivers of organic consumption.  In a qualitative laddering (N=72) study, three distinct groups of motives were identified.  These motives are centred around hedonic, benevolent, and universalist values.  In a quantitative survey (N=1453), the...

COORDINATION IN THE UNITED STATES HOG/PORK INDUSTRY AgEcon
Schrader, Lee F..
This contribution to a multi-country study of vertical coordination in the hog/pork sector provides a primarily descriptive analysis of coordination of the U.S. hog/pork industry. A common framework of review and analysis is used to facilitate comparison of the industries in Canada, Denmark, Netherlands, and the U.S. The concepts of chain management are used to reach some conclusions regarding the U.S. industry to compete in world markets. Parallel coordination systems are identified. Lack of trust is found to limit development of closer coordination and to limit communication of users' preferences upstream in the sector.

Dairy supply chain restructuring and its impact on farmers' revenues in Poland AgEcon
Falkowski, Jan; Malak-Rawlikowska, Agata; Milkczarek-Andrzejewska, D..
Supply chain restructuring and its impact on farmers’ situation have become the subject of vast interest among agricultural economists. However, there have been relatively few studies trying to quantitatively asses this issue. This paper analyses the impact of supply chain modernisation on dairy farmers in Poland. It is shown that joining the modern marketing channel positively affects farmers’ revenues. The decision to enter the modern channel is crucially dependent on access to funds and facilitated by having larger cow herds.

Delivering Seeds of 'Orphan' Crops: The Case Studies of Potato and Groundnut in India AgEcon
Pal, Suresh; Singh, Harbir; Mathur, Prasoon.
This paper examines the performance of the Indian seed system in the context of high volume, low value seed, using the case studies of potato and groundnut. In theory, public sector should be able to address seed needs of farmers growing these crops. However, the ability of the public sector is constrained by a number of institutional and technical factors, and farmers largely depend upon traditional sources of seed. The traditional sources meet more than two-thirds of the total seed demand , and the rest is met by the formal seed system, mainly public seed agencies. Most of the farmers buy fresh seed for quality reasons, and only 12-15 percent farmers purchase seed to change variety. In potato, technological innovation provided options to enhance...
