A MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF Boophilus microplus (ACARI: IXODIDAE): NON-PARASITIC PHASE Rev Salud Anim.
de la Vega,R; Díaz,G; da Fonseca,A.H.
Multivariate statistical methods are relatively new tools for data analysis. They have a lot of applications in biological researches: nevertheless, for several reasons, they have not been widely employed in this subject yet. Recently, present authors published a paper applying multivariate statistics on non-parasitic phase of Anocentor nitens. In the present article Boophilus microplus has received a very similar statistic treatment. In this paper, the influence of different incubation conditions was studied in groups of 12-15 individuals in each of the 24 combinations of six temperatures 24, 27, 30, 32, 34 and 36ºC and four relative humidity values, 100, 80, 75.5 and 70% over the cycle variables of B. microplus. According to the results, the best...

A MULTIVATIATE ANALYSIS OF Anocentor nitens (IXODOIDEA: IXODIDAE): NON-PARASITIC PHASE/[title] [title language=es]ANÁLISIS MULTIVARIADO DE Anocentor nitens (IXODOIDEA: IXODIDAE): FASE NO PARASITARIA Rev Salud Anim.
de la Vega,R; Díaz,G.
Multivariate statistical methods are useful tools complementary to classic univariate methods. In biology, they are used in several scenarios where data structure, classification and grouping are necessary. Nevertheless, it seems they have not been employed in the study of non-parasitic phase of ticks or any other arthropod. In this paper, the influence of different incubation conditions was studied in groups of 12-15 individuals in each of the 24 combinations of six temperatures 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, and 34ºC and four relative humidities 100, 80, 75.5 and 70% over the cycle variables of Anocentor nitens looking for establishing the most suitable environmental conditions to increase or decrease ticks performance and to apply these knowledges to zoogeography....

CASTRO, K. N. de C.; CHAGAS, A. C. de S.; COSTA-JÚNIOR, L. M.; CANUTO, K. M.; BRITO, E. S. de; RODRIGUES. T. H. S.; ANDRADE, I. M. de.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the acaricidal activity of the volatile oils of three species of Croton, Euphorbiaceae, against the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus. The volatile oils were obtained by hydrodistillation, analyzed by GC?MS and GC-FID and their acaricidal activity was evaluated by the larval packettest and adultimmersion test. The volatile oils from Croton conduplicatus Kunth, Croton pulegiodorus Baill., and two different collections of Croton grewioides Baill. (CG1 and CG2) showed eucalyptol (24.09%), p-cymene (23.13%) and methyl chavicol (83.59% and 95.38%) as the major compounds, respectively. All the volatile oils tested in this study showed efficacy against larvae and engorged females of Rhipicephalus microplus. Therefore,...

An Alternative and Rapid Method for the Extraction of Nucleic Acids from Ixodid Ticks by Potassium Acetate Procedure BABT
Rodríguez,Islay; Fraga,Jorge; Noda,Angel Alberto; Mayet,Milagro; Duarte,Yanisia; Echevarria,Eduardo; Fernández,Carmen.
Four variants of the potassium acetate procedure for DNA extraction from ixodid ticks at different stage of their life cycles were evaluated and compared with phenol-chloroform and ammonium hydroxide methods. The most rapid and most efficient variant was validated in the DNA extraction procedure from the engorged ticks collected from bovine, canine as well as from house ticks for the screening of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma spp. and Babesia spp. The ammonium hydroxide procedure was used for non-engorged ticks. All the variants were efficient and allowed obtaining PCR-quality material according to the specific amplification of 16S rRNA gene fragment of the original tick. DNA extracted from the ticks under the study was tested by multiplex PCR...

Analysis of Bm86 conserved epitopes: is a global vaccine against Cattle Tick Rhipicephalus microplus possible? Repositório Alice
BLECHA, I. M. Z.; CSORDAS, B. G.; AGUIRRE, A. de A. R.; CUNHA, R. C.; GARCIA, M. V.; ANDREOTTI, R..
The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus causes significant economic losses in agribusiness. Control of this tick is achieved mainly through the application of chemical acaricides, often resulting in contamination of animal food products and of the environment. Another major concern associated with acaricide use is the increasing reports of resistance of this tick vector against the active ingredients of many commercial products. An alternative control method is vaccination. However, the commercially available vaccine based on a protein homologous to Bm86 exhibits variations in efficacy relative to the different geographical locations. This study aimed to identify antigenic determinants of the sequences of proteins homologous to Bm86. Phylogenetic analyses...

ANATOMY AND HISTOLOGY OF THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM OF Boophilus microplus (ACARI: IXODIDAE) Rev Salud Anim.
de la Vega,R; Díaz,G; Galán,M; Fernández,C.
The knowledge of the anatomy and histology of the female genital system in ticks is very important as a basic tool in all species in relation to morphological sciences and evolution, physiological events like ovulation, sexual behavior, maturation and mating, and also to research the interrelation tick-hemoparasite. The anatomy and histology of the female genital system in Boophilus microplus are scarcely studied. In the present paper, the female genital system of this tick has been considered as a whole and morphological and functional interrelations between different structures and also some other related items has been presented. Unfed and partially engorged females were employed in the study. The quality and resolution of images are remarkable because...

Brazilian borreliosis with special emphasis on humans and horses BJM
Basile,Roberta Carvalho; Yoshinari,Natalino Hajime; Mantovani,Elenice; Bonoldi,Virgínia Nazário; Macoris,Delphim da Graça; Queiroz-Neto,Antonio de.
Abstract Borreliosis caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is a cosmopolitan zoonosis studied worldwide; it is called Lyme disease in many countries of the Northern Hemisphere and Lyme-like or Baggio-Yoshinari Syndrome in Brazil. However, despite the increasing number of suspect cases, this disease is still neglected in Brazil by the medical and veterinary communities. Brazilian Lyme-like borreliosis likely involves capybaras as reservoirs and Amblyomma and Rhipicephalus ticks as vectors. Thus, domestic animals can serve as key carriers in pathogen dissemination. This zoonosis has been little studied in horses in Brazil. The first survey was performed in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and this Brazilian Borreliosis exhibits many differences from the...

Carrapatos de área urbana: um estudo sobre sazonalidade e infecção por rickettsia / urban area ticks: a study about seasonality and rickettsial infection. Repositório Alice
MATIAS, J.; BLECHA, I. M. Z.; KOLLER, W. W.; GARCIA, M. V.; STEVE-GASSENT, M. D.; BARROS, J. C.; ANDREOTTI, R..
This study was made in an urban forest fragment in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Midwest of Brazil. During a three year period, from 2012 to 2015, the presence of tick species in the environment (vegetation and soil), their seasonality and the occurrence of rickettsial infection in ticks was investigated. 1219 samples were collected, from which 1045 belonged to the Amblyomma sculptum species and 174 belonged to the Amblyomma dubitatum species. The A. sculptum species presented its main annual peak in the periods when rainfall and temperature were the highest, while the A. dubitatum species presented a higher population level in the following season. However, the A. sculptum population decreased during the second year of the study, probably due to...

Contributions of the woolless sheep as a host for the maintenance of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) populations in a pasture area in Brazil. Repositório Alice
GARCIA, M. V.; ANDREOTTI, R.; REIS, F. A.; AGUIRRE, A. de A. R.; BARROS, J. C.; MATIAS, J.; KOLLER, W. W..
Abstract: BackgroundHair sheep breeds are a new, cost-effective option for the diversification of livestock in the Midwest region of Brazil. They are grazed extensively with cattle as well as in isolation in small areas. Hair sheep breeds are vulnerable to infestation by parasites such as the cattle tick, Rhipicephalus microplus, which causes various types of damage and can transmit diseases.MethodsIn this study, Santa Inês hair sheep were naturally infested in an area contaminated by infested cattle and then monitored to determine the ability of these animals to maintain the local tick population in the absence of cattle. After engorged tick females of each generation fell off, the animals were placed in another pasture and were returned only after larvae...

Controle do carrapato por meio de vacina - situação atual e perspectivas. Infoteca-e
ANDREOTTI, R.; GOMES, A.; MALAVAZI-PIZA, K. C.; TANAKA, A. S..
