Multivariate statistical methods are relatively new tools for data analysis. They have a lot of applications in biological researches: nevertheless, for several reasons, they have not been widely employed in this subject yet. Recently, present authors published a paper applying multivariate statistics on non-parasitic phase of Anocentor nitens. In the present article Boophilus microplus has received a very similar statistic treatment. Multivariate statistical methods are useful tools complementary to classic univariate methods. In biology, they are used in several scenarios where data structure, classification and grouping are necessary. Nevertheless, it seems they have not been employed in the study of non-parasitic phase of ticks or any other arthropod. The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus causes significant economic losses in agribusiness. Control of this tick is achieved mainly through the application of chemical acaricides, often resulting in contamination of animal food products and of the environment. Another major concern associated with acaricide use is the increasing reports of resistance of this tick vector against the active ingredients of many commercial products. An alternative control method is vaccination. This study was made in an urban forest fragment in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Midwest of Brazil. During a three year period, from 2012 to 2015, the presence of tick species in the environment (vegetation and soil), their seasonality and the occurrence of rickettsial infection in ticks was investigated. 1219 samples were collected, from which 1045 belonged to the Amblyomma sculptum species and 174 belonged to the Amblyomma dubitatum species. The A. sculptum species presented its main annual peak in the periods when rainfall and temperature were the highest, while the A. dubitatum species presented a higher population level in the following season. Boophilus microplus causa grandes prejuízos econômicos à exploração pecuária no Brasil em função da espoliação dos bovinos, pela transmissão de patógenos, e do alto cursto operacional das técnicas atuais de controle. Ecology of ticks in a taxocenosis of snakes from the Serra do Mendanha, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with new host records Rev. Bras. Zool.

We studied the ecology of ticks found in different species of a taxocenosis of snakes from the Serra do Mendanha, an area of Atlantic Rainforest located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Snakes were sampled monthly in the field during a period of 48 months. The specific identity of the hosts and their parasites, the number of parasites, and and snout-vent length and body mass of each host were recorded. A total of 25% of the species of snakes in the area were parasitized by ticks (larvae, nymphs and adult females) Amblyomma rotundatum Koch, 1844 was the predominant parasite species. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of two cypermethrin- and chlorpyrifos-based acaricides in controlling Rhipicephalus microplus in a naturally infested bovine herd and in in vitro tests, as well as to monitor the animals for tick fever. Male bovines in the rearing phase were used, with 30 Brangus and 30 Nellore animals naturally infested. The groups were composed as follows: 15 Nellore treated, 15 Nellore control, 15 Brangus treated and 15 Brangus control. Every 18 days, the animals were monitored for tick count, acaricide treatment, weight, blood pack cell volume, and clinical signs. Nos últimos anos, a Embrapa Gado de Corte tem recebido inúmeras indagações por carta, telefone, em palestras etc. sobre a utilização do alho, em especial, no controle da mosca-dos- chifres (Haematobia irritans irritans) em bovinos. O principal objetivo do experimento foi verificar a eficácia do alho em pó, adicionado ao sal mineral, no controle de mosca-dos-chifres, carrapatos (Boophilus microplus) e helmintos de bovinos. Background: Acaricide failure has been on the rise in the western and central cattle corridor of Uganda. In this study, we identified the tick species associated with acaricide failure and determined their susceptibility to various acaricide molecules used for tick control in Uganda. Methods: In this cross sectional study, tick samples were collected and identified to species level from 54 purposively selected farms (from 17 districts) that mostly had a history of acaricide failure.
