Para se evitarem agentes mutagênicos no ambiente são necessários indicadores sensíveis para detectar todo o espectro desses compostos. Tais sistemas indicadores tem sido definidos como testes de mutagênese de tipo II, ou seja, aqueles que apresentam alta sensibilidade e baixa especificidade. A maioria dos bioensaios vegetais são considerados testes do tipo II, com especial referencia para os ensaios do micronúcleo e do pelo estaminal em Tradescantia (comelinacea), e o ensaio do grão de pólen ceroso em milho. Outro bioensaio vegetal de interesse para o monitoramento de agentes mutagênicos ambientais e o teste do mosaicismo em soja, que permite especulação sobre o mecanismo envolvido na toxicidade genética. Resumo: Dentre a variedade de bioensaios disponíveis para estudos de detecção e monitoração dos efeitos tóxicos genéticos de substâncias e ambientes contaminados, os bioensaios que empregam a planta Tradescantia destacam-se pela sensibilidade e facilidade de realização de estudos de curto prazo in situ. Este trabalho apresenta uma revisão extensiva dos estudos de mutagênese ambiental empregando Tradescantia como bioindicador, e é complementado com resultados experimentais e indicações metodológicas.

Biological response of tradescantia stamen-hairs to high levels of natural radiation in the Poços de Caldas plateau. Repositório Alice

The objective of the present study was to apply a highly sensitive botanical test of mutagenicity (the Tradescantia stamen-hair mutation bioassay) to assess in situ the biological responses induced by naturally occurring radiation in the Poços de Caldas Plateau. The mutagenesis was evaluated in environments presenting gamma radiation exposure rates ranging from 1.5 mR.min-1 up to 100.0 mR.min-1. The results consistently showed only borderline increases in mutation frequencies in plants exposed to areas with high radiation background, as compared to non-exposed plants. Estudos epidemiológicos mostram uma relação entre a poluição aérea em centros urbanos e a taxa de doenças respiratórias na sua população. Em São Paulo, a concentração dos principais poluentes aéreos é monitorada pela CETESB porém, tais dados não dão idéia do risco ao qual a população está sujeita; plantas bioindicadoras podem dar idéia deste risco. O clone híbrido 4430 de Tradescantia vem sendo utilizado em bioensaios (Trad-MCN, Trad-SH) que avaliam o efeito genotóxico de várias substâncias. Não há registros das potencialidades de bioindicação relativas à estrutura das folhas do clone. Importance of anatomical leaf-blade features for the characterization of medicinal Commelinaceae in the Rio de la Plata area (Argentina) Boletín de la Sociedad

In this paper we examine the leaf-blade anatomy of: Commelina erecta L. var. erecta f. erecta, Tradescantia fluminensis Vell., Tripogandra diuretica (Mart.) Handlos, and T. glandulosa (Seub.) Rohweder. These species grow in the coastal region of the Río de la Plata (Argentina) where they are used as ophthalmic, diuretic, antirheumatic, sudorific, and digestive. The aim of this study was to establish diagnostic features in order to deepen knowledge of these medicinal species and thus, get a valuable tool to establish their botanical identity. The Tradescantia stamen hair mutation assay (Trad-SHM) was employed for assessing the environmental mutagenesis in two areas of São Paulo City. The study sites were defined as follows: 1) Celso Garcia Avenue, an industrial area on the outskirts of the urban center (Belém neighborhood), with an average daily traffic volume of 8,750 vehicles; 2) Doutor Arnaldo Avenue, in downtown area (Pinheiros neighborhood), with a mostly residential and business offices occupation, with an average daily traffic volume of 46,125 vehicles. The Tradescantia micronucleus test is a sensitive bioassay for mutagenesis that may be employed both under field and laboratory conditions. This test has been standardized mostly on the basis of the results obtained with clone 4430. However, this clone is not well adapted to tropical weather, frequently showing problems with growth and flowering. The influence of light intensity on anatomical structure and pigment contents of Tradescantia pallida (Rose) Hunt. cv. purpurea Boom (Commelinaceae) leaves BABT

The aim of this work was to study the effects of five different light intensities on the anatomical structure and on the pigment contents in leaves of Tradescantia pallida cv. purpurea. Once light intensity became lower, the thickness of leaf lamina and mesophyll were reduced. Adjustments in light-harvesting antenna size were observed: an increase in chlorophyll a + b/carotenoids ratio at low-light growth conditions. There was a strong positive linear correlation between the light intensity values and anthocyanin contents. Hence, T. pallida cv. purpurea acclimation to distinct environmental conditions might be related to its capacity of altering structurally and physiologically its phenotype.

The Mutagenic Potential Caused by the Emissions from Combustion of Crude Glycerin and Diesel Fuel BABT

This study evaluated the use of crude glycerin as an alternative of energy generation to replace the traditional fuels. The Tradescantia stamen hair mutation assay (Trad-SH) was applied to study the mutagenic effects caused by the emissions generated in the direct combustion of diesel oil and glycerin in a flame tube furnace. Tradescantia inflorescences were exposed to gaseous emissions from the combustion tests in a fumigation chamber for 30-40 min. The analysis of variance and the Tukey test were applied to compare the differences between six test groups (intoxicated with emissions from glycerin and diesel oil combustion) and a control group.
