Bonamia ostreae-induced mortalities in one-year old European flat oysters Ostrea edulis: experimental infection by cohabitation challenge ArchiMer
Lallias, Delphine; Arzul, Isabelle; Heurtebise, Serge; Ferrand, Sylvie; Chollet, Bruno; Robert, Maeva; Beaumon, Andy; Boudry, Pierre; Morga, Benjamin; Lapegue, Sylvie.
Bonamiosis is a parasitic disease (causative agent: Bonamia ostreae) affecting the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis, responsible for a drastic decline in its aquaculture production. Selective breeding programs for resistance to bonamiosis have been undertaken to counter this disease. In the present study, a 6-month cohabitation challenge experiment was performed in order to transmit the disease from wild oysters injected with the parasite to two tested families of oysters (20 and 8-month old at the beginning of the experiment, with different genetic backgrounds) originating from a selective breeding program developed by IFREMER in France. Mortalities were checked daily and ventricular heart smears were performed on dying or moribund oysters to detect the...

Bonamiosis is a parasitic disease (causative agent: Bonamia ostreae) affecting the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis, responsible for a drastic decline in the aquaculture production of this oyster species. Therefore a selective breeding program for resistance to bonamiosis has been undertaken since 1985 bu Ifremer, leading to the production of several selected oyster families. In the present study, a 6-month cohabitation challenge experiment was performed in order to transmit the disease from wild oysters (injected with the parasite) to two tested families of oysters originating from the selective breeding program. Mortalities were checked daily, and ventricular heart smears were performed on dying or moribund oysters to detect the level of infection to...

Can the protozoan parasite Bonamia ostreae infect larvae of flat oysters Ostrea edulis? ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Langlade, Aime; Chollet, Bruno; Robert, Maeva; Ferrand, Sylvie; Omnes, Emmanuelle; Lerond, Sophie; Couraleau, Yann; Joly, Jean-pierre; Francois, Cyrille; Garcia, Celine.
Bonamia ostreae is an intracellular protistan parasite affecting flat oysters Ostrea edulis. It can be detected in juveniles but mortalities mainly affect oysters which are more than 2 years old. The parasite is usually observed inside haemocytes and sometimes free, notably in gill epithelia suggesting a parasite release through this organ. However, the infective form and ways of entry and release remain undetermined. Flat oysters incubate their larvae in their pallial cavity for 8–10 days before releasing them into the water column. Flat oysters in Bay of Quiberon in South Brittany (France) are known to be infected with B. ostreae since 1979 and is the most important area in France for O. edulis spat collection. Flat oysters incubating larvae were sampled...

Electricity Restructuring and Regional Air Pollution AgEcon
Palmer, Karen L.; Burtraw, Dallas.
This paper investigates the regional air pollution effects that could result from new opportunities for inter-regional power transmission in the wake of more competitive electricity markets. The regional focus is important because of great regional variation in the vintage, efficiency and plant utilization rates of existing generating capacity, as well as differences in emission rates, cost of generation and electricity price. Increased competition in generation could open the door to changes in the regional profile of generation and emissions. We characterize the key determinant of changes in electricity generation and transmission as the relative cost of electricity among neighboring regions. In general, low cost regions are expected to export power...

Evidence for interspecies transmission of oyster herpesvirus in marine bivalves ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Renault, Tristan; Lipart, Cécile; Davison, Andrew.
Since 1991, numerous herpesvirus infections associated with high mortality have been reported around the world in various marine bivalve species. In order to determine whether these infections are due to ostreid herpesvirus-l (OsHV1), a previously characterized pathogen of the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas), PCR analysis was carried out on 30 samples of larvae collected from four bivalve species (C. gigas, Ostrea edulis, Ruditapes decussatus and Ruditapes philippinarum), most exhibiting mortality prior to collection. All samples were shown to be infected by OsHV1. Viral genomes in three samples of C. gigas and three of R. philippinarum that originated from the same hatchery were unusual in bearing a deletion of at least 2.8 kbp in an inverted repeat...

Experimental transmission of a Herpes-like virus to axenic larvae of Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Le Deuff, Rose-marie; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Renault, Tristan; Cochennec, Nathalie.
A herpes-like virus which was associated with mortalities amongst hatchery-reared larvae of Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas. was observed for the first time in France during the summer 1991 (Nicolas et al.. 1992). Since this first report, we have noted further outbreaks of the disease in the summers of 1992 and 1993 in hatcheries on the western coasts of France in which a similar virus was associated with moribund larvae. Moreover, in the summer 1991, Hine et al. (1992) described a herpes-like virus responsible for larval mortality of hatchery reared C. gigas, in New Zealand. Ail these viruses are c10sely related with respect to their size and morphology and to their apparent cellular tropism for fibroblastic cells.

French scallops: A new host for ostreid herpesvirus-1 ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Davison, Andrew J.; Renault, Tristan.
Sporadic high mortalities were reported among larval French scallops (Pecten maximus). Electron microscopy of moribund larvae revealed particles with the characteristics of a herpesvirus in association with cellular lesions. PCR and DNA sequencing showed that the virus is a variant of ostreid herpesvirus-1 that has already been described in clams and oysters. This is the first description of a herpesvirus infection of a scallop species. The virus was transmitted successfully from an extract of infected scallop larvae to uninfected scallop or oyster (Crassostrea, gigas) larvae, demonstrating that it is able to infect both species. Detection of viral DNA in asymptomatic adult scallops by in situ hybridisation indicates that the herpesvirus may have been...
